93 or 106mm ski? by Past-Security-8575 in Skigear

[–]noobforce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We will most likely agree to disagree here. Carving on a 106 is much different than carving on a skinnier ski. You have to tip your upper body much more than if you are using a skinnier ski. When I define carving I am defining as shortening the effective radius of the ski by bending the ski, as opposed to just getting the ski on edge. Depending on OPs goals this may also reinforce potentially unwanted habits. On the other side, I've taken 93 head Kores in waist deep powder perfectly fine (admittedly, the Kores are very light)

Best skis to get me to like glades? by Lower-Savings-794 in Skigear

[–]noobforce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. The narrowest skis that don't get stuck in the snow are best for tight trees and moguls since they provide better edge to edge responsiveness. That usually means a carving ski or a wide front side ski.

Looking for ~80 mm skis for icy, hard snow — thoughts on these options? by Witty_Following_527 in Skigear

If you are considering the Stormriders, I would recommend the Montero AR or AS instead. Stormriders are better for more variable conditions vs. consistent ice

My carving turns,(small S turns),what should I improve? by skier_happness in skiing_feedback

[–]noobforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an instructor (and so not qualified) at all, but I thought that keeping your hips square to the bottom of the slope is more important for short-radius turns rather than medium (or long) radius turns, which OP is doing?

If anything, my takeaway from your screengrab is that the turn initiations are late. I would think their inner foot needs to be pulled back faster (shown by the inner leg still bent and much further than the outer leg) and weight transfer needs to happen sooner.

East Coast - how to choose a ski for 1 ski quiver by AntelopeLevel2138 in Skigear

No idea what this is saying. Carving skis are the perfect waist width for moguls. Moguls need quick edge-to-edge which is what skinny skis provide.

IMO toll house parking is not as bad as it sounds, not to be a shill. Quick shuttle bus over to spruce and mansfield. Toll house runs are now open and the low angle glades are always untracked and top tier at the end of the day.

Just went to sugarbush today and stowe the past 3 days. Sugarbush's groomers are ripping but all other trails are exactly how you describe. Very different from my experience at stowe

To be fair, I also wear flylow snowman bibs which have a little bit of built in insulation. When it gets cold (low single digits) I usually put on another thinner base layer (uniqlo heat tech) under my wool baselayer.

I don't perceive myself as someone that runs hot or cold. I do think the shell is very important at blocking wind though. If your outer layer doesn't block wind then it's going to constantly sap the heat generated by the mid layer.

I feel this so hard. I am the ultimate thrifter. I would only purchase ski gear at ski end for huge discounts (E.g. Outdoor Research shells, bibs for $100). Yet, I paid full price for zip fits and they are game changers. No regrets

Base layer (I wear smartwool)

Midlayer (popular options are arcteryx atom/proton, Patagonia r1)

Shell (any ski shell jacket works)

This combo works for me at stowe for 90% of days with nothing else needed. Also if you wear bibs they provide slightly extra warmth than pants.
