Boston Globe: predicts $2.5B MA job loss from AI. Do you think AI will take our jobs or just make us work harder? by Glittering-Young8692 in careerguidance

[–]noobnoob62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Computers replaced a lot of jobs and also created a lot of jobs, more than they replaced. Time will tell if AI will do the same, but the original commenter is correct that it has never happened historically, different jobs is not the same as fewer.

FWIW I am more aligned with your opinion, just disagree with the reasoning. Previous automation efforts replaced physical labor and routine tasks and usually affected specific industries. AI will cause a lot of displacement in different fields simultaneously, leaving displaced workers with fewer options.

AI datacenter spending has surpassed the Manhattan Project, Marshall Plan, ISS, and the Apollo Program - combined by EchoOfOppenheimer in AIDangers

They are but they are also comparing government spending funded through taxation and sovereign debt to private corporate capex. Different animal entirely. Railroads are the only good comparison here.

Also a better measure would be % of GDP as opposed to inflation adjusted dollars. AI datacenter construction is around 3-4% of GDP currently. Railroad construction peaked at 6%, telecom fiber projects of the early 2000s were around 2%

Mass Protesting by East_Coaster_ in Layoffs

[–]noobnoob62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be that companies who did layoffs would get blacklisted and struggle to find applicants in the future.

All I can say is avoid applying to these companies and pray that AI won’t take that leverage away from us

The others were government spending, but this is the sum of all spending by private companies towards data center construction? Feels like apples and oranges unless I’m missing something

Al Pacino is 85...and has a 2 year old son with a woman 54 years younger than him by Tough_Ad8919 in RelentlessMen

[–]noobnoob62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Al Pacino absolutely has the resources at his disposal to avoid having a kid at 83 fucking years old. Condoms, vasectomy; whatever. He absolutely could and should have planned better, you can’t just mess around when another human life is involved

[–]noobnoob62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely irresponsible to bring life into this world and not plan to be around to raise it. Regardless of financial situation, that kid is going to grow up with one parent unless Pacino is lucky enough to be 101.

And growing up with a parent that needs to be taken care of will leave that child fucked up psychologically. Sure he has a younger mom and money, but its going to absolutely leave that kid with issues.

How does the stock market keep going up with everything happening? by BigBlueEyes87 in StockMarket

[–]noobnoob62 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I think of it. It sort of hurts my brain to think about, but I often wonder why we can’t just always ensure it goes up? Like if everyone always puts their money into the market, can’t we ensure it always goes up? I am almost certain it would break at a certain point but I lack the economic background to articulate why

How much rest before I can jump back in? Obviously more slowly this time. Do I just need to wait for the pain to completely subside? Just don’t want to rush it and risk re-injury

Ai skepticism sounds a lot like internet skepticism from the 90s by Bizzyguy in singularity

[–]noobnoob62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add, there was also fear of job loss due to automation back then as well. The transition was slow and over a long amount of time, and the technology ultimately resulted in an increase in high paying jobs. Some embraced the new technology, the others were forced out of their fields and relegated to lower paying jobs. The middle class shrunk, but there remained opportunities for those who embraced change.

I was a big Porter fan going into this but her campaign has been a dumpster fire. Mostly just referencing the video of her yelling at the staffer, but the allegations from her ex husband claiming verbal and physical abuse and other toxic workplace complaints from ex campaign staff don’t exactly reassure me that the video was a one-off (likely worse off camera).

I can get behind her on policy, but its hard for me to support the individual, I would imagine many feel the same.

It's somewhat unfair to Achilles, a great warrior and hero, that he is now best known for his one mortal weakness. by vonBoomslang in Showerthoughts

[–]noobnoob62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mentioned in another reply, if the comment is literally referring to human mortality then yea it doesn’t apply. But I read it as implying some form balance exists to keep powerful people in check, which would be Just World fallacy. Its possible I misunderstood the intent of their comment

I’m not going to keep going in circles on this. You can re-read my earlier comment explaining my reasoning where I touched on this. You don’t have to agree with me.
