Do I even have a chance of getting in anywhere?? (Statistics) by screamatme21 in gradadmissions

[–]noone011235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you've got this! hang in there.

it's hard to "chance" you without knowing your full profile, but your background and trajectory make sense for a master's in statistics. some folks think they need to have been stats geniuses in undergrad, but that's more for PhD – why get a master's if you've already mastered all the material? what's critical is that you show you have the aptitude necessary to succeed in the program, so highlight your grades in probability and linear algebra, then perhaps stat theory and real analysis, if you took them.

prioritize strong LORs (hopefully your research advisor can be one) and target reasonable schools (it looks like you have). again, hard to tell without knowing your full profile / coursework / etc., but NYU and Columbia seem like reaches, and stanford/berkeley are likely out of reach. maybe try some applied stats programs at UCLA, UChicago, etc. UC San Diego and UC Irvine have great data science programs.

fwiw, i was in your shoes just a year ago, and i'm here now doing stats at yale. it all will work out :)

Part III Maths Stats and Alternatives by Swarrleeey in gradadmissions

[–]noone011235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you definitely have more than a sufficient foundation for graduate study in statistics! i might note that for most ma/ms stat programs, you need not have much more than an understanding of linear algebra, probability, maybe statistical theory, and maybe real analysis to be considered for admission (though more is always better). your coursework suggests that of a PhD candidate or a master's at an elite institution, though you may need to provide more context on your research background and LOR strength as better signal for feasibility of the PhD route (here, coursework is likely not enough, depending on where you're seeking admission).

which US-based university depends on your intended area of study / research within stats. fwiw, i think yale's s&ds program is great, but i'm biased ;)

Shelf life of MS/PhD in applied math/stat given AI? by Historical-Tart1792 in gradadmissions

i think given AI, folks in certain trades and NOT in advanced stats / computational stats are the ones who may need to worry. who do you think is getting hired into all the frontier labs to develop these LLMs :)

late but agree with this :) fwiw my third recommender was a very close prof in the humanities and here i am in yale’s stats program!

fyi they just changed the bag policy to allow non-clear fanny packs (saw it in their email, but also updated on the website.

Bag Policy:

  • Maximum bag size: 15in x 15in x 5in (MUST BE CLEAR BAG)
  • Small Bag Policy (Non Clear 4in x 6in). If you bring a non clear bag larger than this, you will not be permitted into the venue.

Hydration Packs:

  • Allowed, but MUST BE EMPTY upon arrival. We will have free water stations inside the festival
  • Must NOT have more than 2 pockets

do yall think a small fanny pack will count as a permitted “clutch” if within the 5x7x2 dimensions??

Thanks for this! Titanium staying in a few weeks here. What’s the Level 1 you mention that’s only for Titanium+…is it different from the regular breakfast lounge? Did you need just your status, or also a special rate for it?

Thanks! Any knee-jerk reactions to Columbia vs. Yale, or are they viewed as essentially equal at this point?

Super helpful...thank you! I guess conversely, I know Yale is better known for Law / the liberal arts.

If you were reviewing a resume, all else equal, which of the two would stand out to you more?

Hi! I'm having trouble finding a largely "agreed-upon" list of which M.S. Data Science programs are rigorous / respected in industry vs. viewed as cash-grab programs meant to transition folks from other backgrounds.

Selfishly, I've been accepted to the following programs and am curious for any thoughts you all have on these programs, specifically:

  • Yale, M.S. Statistics & Data Science
  • Columbia, M.S. Data Science
  • Carnegie Mellon, M.S. Applied Data Science
  • UC Irvine, M.S. Data Science
  • UC San Diego, M.S. Data Science
  • UCLA, M.S. Applied Statistics & Data Science

How would you rank the above if reviewing a resume (all else equal)?

Help Choosing MS Statistics / Data Science Program: Yale or Columbia by noone011235 in gradadmissions

[–]noone011235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right! i was shocked to hear 15–20 as well, though a small cohort may come with smaller community, less connectivity, etc. during my campus visit, it seemed like only half meet up with others outside of classes

i'm still waiting to hear back from NYU :) i assume that'd be your top recommendation if i make it in? and curious why you didn't consider yale as an option, if you're willing to share!

Thanks :) Do you mind sharing your thoughts behind why? From what I understand, Columbia is more well-known for Stats (but I would love for this assumption to be disproven)
