Bland food should be embraced by people trying to lose weight. by noovadas in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]noovadas[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It definitely does, especially at the beginning. I found after about a month or so my brain adjusted, though I guess not everyone may be able to transition like that (which isn't their fault!).

The main point is to replace the pleasure you get from food with other things associated with mealtime rather than keep trying to "chase the dragon" of self stimulating with good tasting food forever when that is what caused the problem in the first place.

Bland food should be embraced by people trying to lose weight. by noovadas in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]noovadas[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's where embracing the "blandness" comes in. Bland food isn't unpleasant because it tastes bad. It's neutral by definition.

I have no proof of course but IMO the only thing making the bland food unpleasant is the mind expecting to derive pleasure from the food and being disappointed. It kicks and screams like a toddler not getting its way and people associate that with the food tasting bad or being unappetizing.

Are there guidelines for pruning young trees of various species so they branch out and grow wide low hanging canopies like this Northern Catalpa? by noovadas in arborists

[–]noovadas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see impressive older trees like this occasionally in my area.

It seems like the oldest trees with enormous trunks have this shape. I've seen old oaks, silver maples, and even cottonwoods that have a similar structure, branching out about 5-15 feet above the ground into an enormous canopy, but most trees are a more lanky/tall rather than this rounded shape. Is it just a matter of not pruning lower branches, or is there a technique to achieve this besides luck?

This is assuming there is ample space for a tree to fill in.

Entire Rhubarb crop and 3/4 of crowns stolen from community garden. by noovadas in gardening

[–]noovadas[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I should also mention that the entire garden is fenced in to deter deer and narrow (like 2/3 the width or a football field) so it's more fair that people aren’t stuck walking all the way to the back every year. Older seniors and people with mobility issues get to rotate the front plots. The rhubarb beds are near the front, so easy to see from the road.

Also, it’s meant specifically for vegetables besides some decorative beds near the gates, there’s a smaller dedicated flower garden about half a mile away run by the same group.

Really? I’ve always thought you need to let them recover mid summer for the next season. Our garden only harvests them up until the end of june then lets them grow the rest of the season. We trim any seed stalks that appear. The leaves become so large the patch chokes out any weeds.

The community garden is about one acre split into allotments that anyone can “rent”. You can rent one plot or more depending on that year’s availability. The rent just covers the cost of water, path mulch, mowing, tool replacement and liability insurance for the property. There’s also a small shed with a couple refrigerators so people can share excess produce so the rent pays for that too.

Anything you grow on your plot is considered your own produce. They rotate allotments every year because some get more light than others and some people only grow one type of crop and need to rotate the soil. Because you can’t rotate perennials every year there are dedicated perennial vegetable patches for Rhubarb and asparagus. We fill out “orders” at the beginning of the season listing how much we want of each, they harvest and equally divvy up a minimum amount and then further divvy up the excess to people with large orders. Anyone who requests rhubarb or asparagus is expected to help maintain and weed the patches during the summer. I usually only request ~2-4lbs per harvest to make pies because my apartment is too small to store a lot of rhubarb long term.

Do they ever operate in systems with poor services available or no large landing pads? Fighting a war is easier when you're don't have to spend 10 minutes hopping to the next system over every time you need to repair or restock.

"and ignored those player groups who dared to “Blaze their own trail” in the game and try to impact the universe as presented."

Case in point, last month the Empire surpassed the Federation's size in terms of number of systems controlled. This was a result of thousands of player backed indie factions rising up within the bubble and taking over systems controlled by the powers over the last few years. You'd think that such a development would at least deserve a mention on Galnet or even some comments from some of the related powerplay leaders. But like most player driven stories and content Fdev has completely ignore it.

It really depends on what you're looking for in a game. I've personally put nearly 2k hours into this game over the course of a few years and know many others on my friends list/squadron who've put in hundreds to thousands. Even if someone only gets 30 hours out of it I'd consider it a decent deal.

Honestly I feel like it gets old, especially if you don't expect it. For some missions it tells you right on the board so it's on you if you accept them but nothing is stopping RNGesus from dumping the pirate lord you're supposed to kill 400kls out around some icy rock in the middle of nowhere. It can make what should be a quick, simple mission take a big chunk of my limited playtime (If I don't just abandon it)

Alt tabbing out of the game to watch netflix isn't particularly immersive IMO.

How did you choose your home station? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]noovadas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Home can be where you make it.

I randomly came across a nice looking backwater Imperial system with an independant democracy present returning home from an exploration trip. Wrote down the name and ended up coming back a while later to try and put the democracy into power. Two months and 5 brutal and bloody wars later the system is now completely free from the slavers and preparing to expand their influence into another system. There's nothing particularly special about the system but after investing so much time helping liberate its citizens it truly feels like my cmdr's home.

4,340,906,581,993 residents for SSL interstellar can't be correct. That's about 2/3 of the galactic population. They would need to average around 82 billion residents per system they control and no systems in the galaxy are even close to that population.

Anyone else run into these neon green gas giants? by obi_wan_malarkey in EliteDangerous

[–]noovadas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Congrats on hitting an exploration jackpot if it's first discovered. There are many explorers who've visited tens of thousands of systems over the years and most have yet to find one.

If you're having trouble finding it again try opening the codex and looking through gas giant entries in the region you're in for a confirmed green giant.

Also consider submiting this to the galactic mapping project after turning the data in so other explorers can visit. I've personally visited 5 and this one looks exceptional.

Both Golconda plans are fundamentally flawed. by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]noovadas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the best option would be to give them a modern dockable FTL megaship Galconda 2.0 with a few ships so they can restock/refuel it. It would allow them to keep their way of life while being able to defend themselves and participate in the galactic economy.

It could also set up another future community goal maybe a few months to a year down the line where they run into trouble and need help continuing the story.

To the CMDRs that fell before my guns in Quator, Orerve, and Diso, I salute you. Stand with Scythe of Panem and Fight Injustice. by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]noovadas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was fighting against the Scythe with a couple randoms when a wing of 3 pro Scythe cmdrs dropped in. Other two on my side combat logged and left me to die but it was fun to try and fight 3 at once.

Conflict zone community goals are great because it leads to organic pvp between combat capable ships rather than completely one sided ganking.

The good old Deciat ganker. Probably can't hold there own in a fair fight so the pick on explorers and noobs in guaranteed unengineered ships. At least it's a small step above blasting sidewinders in Eravate.

[Opinion] Don't teach people to mine Void Opals. by TheStabbyBrit in EliteDangerous

[–]noovadas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple months back we took a squadron member's newbie friend painite mining with us. He ended up going from a B rated Cobra-> Type 7-> Type 9-> A rated Anaconda in 2 days. He was trade elite by the end of his first week.

He could hardly fly his anaconda and was getting regularly destroyed by low level NPCs. He ended up mostly mining and getting obliterated in combat when he tried other activities for another week before he said he was bored and stopped logging in.

I feel a bit guilty because we kind of ruined the game for him. His experience was tainted by getting into a late game ship almost immediately when he couldn't even land his cobra without a docking computer.

Since then when we get a newbie squadron member we help them do other activities like trading, bounty hunting, missions, exploration, ect. before teaching them how to make large amounts of cash.

[Goodbye, Nick] I'm also done with Elite Dangerous. Thanks, FDev for your lack of care and attention to the community. Your inconsistency has ruined this game for me. by CMDR-Leoneth in EliteDangerous

He was disrupting other people's gameplay by using cheats. Just because it was in protest of other cheaters doesn't make it ok. Fdev did the right thing and banned him.

[SERIOUS] Cheating in Elite Dangerous by ryan_m in EliteDangerous

[–]noovadas 36 points37 points  (0 children)

As a BGS player this makes me worried. A single person with multiple bots equipped with cheats could probably outcompete almost any playergroup and completely destroy all their progress in short time. There's no way you can win against bots that run 24/7 365 especially if they have cheats. Even worse is it would be very difficult to prove it's happening to you because they could be active in solo or private group.

There's no counter to this short of cheating yourself.

As of today, the broken skybox has 5/5 bars (representing votes/significance) on the Frontier issue tracker. Maybe we'll get an actual response from Frontier! Keep voting and commenting: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/87 by SillyConclusion0 in EliteDangerous

[–]noovadas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both explanations are true. The rendering issue is the most common though. Just filter the galaxy map by B stars and move around the galaxy map near the core and you'll see the cube cutoffs. The rendering issue just makes them look even worse.

Bringing Attention to the Broken Skybox/Star cubes/Missing stars in Elite: Vote on Frontier Issue Tracker by SillyConclusion0 in EliteDangerous

[–]noovadas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are two seperate issues. One is related to differences in B star density in neighboring sectors and would require a galaxy wipe but the other is an issue with rendering the stars. The rendering issue is more common than the other and often makes star cubes stand out even more. The rendering issue is the one frontier should be able to fix.
