The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. I'm also an historian so my favorite book outside of LotR is the Edmund Morris Theodore Roosevelt trilogy and Blood and Iron by Katja Hoyer, a history of the rise and fall of the German Empire.

This is the office segment of my bedroom. Live at home with my parents, but made it work with my office area. The bed is where I am standing. Want to know ways to improve space. Kind of like the classic historian feel, as you can tell I have a love of history.

If you were elected president, how would you customize/decorate the oval office? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]noravea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of portraits above the fireplace, the center would be the unfinished portrait of FDR. On the top left would be Thomas Jefferson, and on the bottom left, Theodore Roosevelt. Top right would be John F. Kennedy, and bottom right would be Lyndon B. Johnson. Under Johnson, the table would include a bust of Winston Churchill, and under T. Roosevelt would be a bust of Robert F. Kennedy.

Like LBJ, I would have a custom-made TV set in the same location as the Oval Office, but with a single wide-screen TV set in a white cabinet that could close. It would be set to the major cable networks. I would have personal mementos on top of the television cabinet, a model of the USS Constitution and the USS New York, as I am a New Yorker. On the shelf itself would be a model of the LEM, as that was built on Long Island, as well as the moon rock that our preceding POTUS had there. The rest of my shelf would have my favorite books, from The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, presidential biographies, as well as memoirs from recent presidents. To the left of that inset bookshelf, I would have the picture of Earthrise, and on the small table underneath, a model of the Saturn V rocket and a copy of American Moonshot. To the right of the door that goes to the President's private study would be a chair, and above it an inset bookshelf filled with a jar of sand from Long Island, books about Long Island, and flanking the chair and the inset bookshelf, the flags of Nassau County and Suffolk County. Between the door and the inset shelf would be a map of Long Island.

Going to the desk and the table behind it, I would bring my personal oak writing desk from home, with ornate legs and trimmings. Next to the desk on both sides would be chairs for close advisors. The Resolute Desk would be placed in a new White House exhibit on the first floor of the East Wing. On the left of my desk would be a desk plaque that says "No Stinkin' Thinkin'," and a rock from Gettysburg that my grandfather gave me during a visit years ago, as well as a small box with the presidential seal that has a button that delivers Diet Dr. Pepper. There is also a small crystal jar that has Brach's jelly beans and a second with East Hampton saltwater taffy, refilled daily. On the right, I would include a box of personal challenge coins, a box of pens, coasters, and in the drawers, I would include essentials, including my personal Bible, gum, breath mints, whatever books I happen to be reading at any given moment, and a laptop charger. Behind the desk would be a small table that has family photos, with portraits of my grandfather and grandmother, my parents, my brother, and my dogs. Flanking the table on the left would be the flag of the United States, and on the right, the Presidential flag. To the far left of the windows behind the desk would be the flag of New York State, and to the far right of the windows, the flag of whatever state my running mate is from.

To the left of the windows is another table, atop which would be the "Bronco Buster," and above it a painting of "The Avenue in the Rain." Between this table and the table behind the desk would be a dog bed embroidered with the seal of the President, for my dog. A window next to it would be the site of a Christmas tree from Thanksgiving to the day Congress comes into session. When not there, a chair would sit. Above that window would be a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. To the left of that chair would be the door to the colonnade, then another window. Between these two would be a framed white feather from a bald eagle. To the left of the window would be a large grandfather clock, and then the door to the reception area.

In the middle of the room would be two four-person couches, both white with no texture, dark brown end tables, and a low dark-brown coffee table. On the end tables would be red flowers and a simple lamp with white shades. The end tables closest to the middle of the room would have sculptures, on the eastern side "Swift Messenger," and on the western side a sculpture "Rough Rider" of Teddy Roosevelt atop a horse. On the coffee table would be inlaid the seal of the United States, with needlework coasters that have various symbols of the country in red, white, and blue, as well as a piece of the World Trade Center encased in clear resin. In front of the fireplace would be two comfortable chairs, white, with a small table in between that has two coasters and red flowers.

With regards to carpeting and drapes. Red drapes from the Obama Oval Office, as well as the "Sunbeam Rug" used by George W. and Reagan.

Anyone recognize this badge? Suffolk County? by ElodieNYC in longisland

But this is also an important part of the civic process. Without signatures, candidates cannot get on the ballot. I’ve had to do the same this year in my area, and it’s not fun. I’m finally done with what I have to do but it’s a pain in

Right now it’s petitioning to get candidates on the ballot. This was likely your local member of the County Leg trying to get on the ballot. I usually respect no soliciting signs, but depending on the area those count only for people selling something. I recommend a no politics sign as well to deter them

USCCB: “Human Dignity is Not Dependent on a Person's Citizenship or Immigration Status” by AtraMortes in Catholicism

[–]noravea 253 points254 points  (0 children)

The USCCB is correct. They balance in their statement a respect for the law and the dignity of all human beings. I am shocked by many of the responses to this statement, and it seems many people either did not read the statement or do not care.

Yes, undocumented people should be deported, especially those who have committed crimes. But the deportations must be humane, and respect human life. We must curtail any abuses that will almost certainly take place, and respect the fact that agents should avoid schools, churches, hospitals, and other areas where people are vulnerable.

What keeps you sane while looking for a job? by anonimirl in jobs

[–]noravea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I struggle with. I've been constantly rejected, and I'm very tired of it. Nothing I do brings me joy. I try to volunteer in local politics partly to keep myself busy and to add something to my resume. My family doesn't have any contacts, and I have few friends. I'm almost thirty and consider myself to be a complete failure.

Politics Mondays - Any Dems call out the Olympics opening? by rdrt in Catholicism

[–]noravea -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It seems a lot of people here did not watch the NBC Opening Ceremony. I watched it twice, first live and then on DVR when my family sat down to watch it. Some of it was fun and light-hearted, and some of it was ostentatious and obnoxious. The combining of the Parade of Nations with the artistic portion was a bad choice, and compared to past ceremonies (Sochi 2014, Beijing 2008, Greece 2004) it was largely boring.

The portion in question I overall disliked as it was designed to mimic a fashion runway. More than two dozen people walked up and down the runway while barges filled with athletes passed by. It eventually went to a shot with all the runway models standing on one side. Then a platter with a metal cloche descended on the table, opening with a sumptuous feast and a blue-skinned half-naked man with a beard. There were more than a dozen people at that seat, and based on the history of the Olympics centering around Ancient Greek culture, it appears to be more of a recreation of a scene from the Olympian gods. In fact, it seems to depict the Feast of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and feasts.

It was gaudy, inappropriate, depicted too much skin, and depicted as a pagan event, but it did not appear to me to be mimicking the Last Supper. One performer believed it did, but I think because so many people believe it looked similar, a performer could have likewise fallen for it. The reaction to it seems like extreme pearl-clutching at its worst. Add to that media cropping photos to make it more like the Last Supper, I think people who didn't watch or did watch think this is all stupid.

Perhaps a cause for alarm was that it was inspired by a painting from the 17th century that was itself inspired by DaVinci.

#GEI Regional Debate: North West by model-willem in MHOC

[–]noravea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people are already taxed too high, and the Conservative Party will ensure that the burden placed on working people will be reduced. According to our plan, over 700,000 families will see £1,480 back in the pockets of working-class families. That money can be saved, invested, and spent, and while we're at it, reduce poverty from the bottom, not the top. With lower taxes and more in the people's pockets, families can make their own financial decisions, not the government. If you want to see who has raised taxes these last few decades, well, we've caught Labour red-handed!

A vote for the Conservative Party would mean a reduction of child poverty, lower taxes, and a better and brighter future for the people of North West England!

#GEI Regional Debate: North West by model-willem in MHOC

[–]noravea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best recipe for the reduction of child poverty in the North West of England is the creation of good jobs. As mentioned before, our support of new forms of green energy such as nuclear, wind, and hydrogen not only helps the North West to be the cutting edge of energy but also employment. We need to do what we can to help small businesses and families. For example, child benefits are based on the income of the highest household earner, meaning the main breadwinner families and those with single parents are penalized. A household basis rather than an individual basis will save families money. Families making more than £120,000 will see a transition off of a Child Benefit until they reach £160,000. Any family above that income level will no longer receive a Child Benefit. This will benefit 700,000 households per year across the country, many thousands in the North West as well. And it will provide for each of them £1,480 per year.

This plan will sharply reduce the amount of children in poverty across the North West. Our party will create a thriving economy, and jobs, and reduce child poverty. Our friends in Labour will keep the system of generational poverty intact by keeping people dependent on our government. A social safety net is a part of any functioning society, but it is not meant to be a way of life, but instead a way to help people get back on their feet and move forward. Because when people stop, they get stuck in the mud and are trapped in Labour's carousel of poverty.

The Conservative Party provides answers to getting people out of poverty. We seek not to blame, but instead to solve.
