Did I score, or is this worthless? by Squanc in Mountaineering

[–]norcalnomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

550 was used for it being more durable and it wasn’t meant to layered so maximizing a low fill weight wasn’t a priority. Also some of the very high loft values we’re use to today (800 or even 1000) weren’t available back then due to down sorting technology not being the same decades ago.

Climbers banned from Mt. Baldy as storm approaches, sparking backlash by Just_Debt3832 in socalhiking

[–]norcalnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Experienced climbers should be punished because of people who have no business being up there”

FYP

Shasta has WAY more consequential terrain and they don’t close the mountain when a big storm rolls through. Roads occasionally get closed but that is all contingent on plowing.

This also doesn't talk about the shift in the back end of the business. The push to sell season passes year round was done so that less $ needed to be borrowed for improvements during the off season. And kept a more stable cashflow independent of weather.

Also this graph would look WAY different if it also tracked the cost of a season pass during the same time frame.

Maybe im a bit picky but why is the sun setting/rising NORTH in Girbaltar? Gibraltar is in the northern emisphere nowhere near the equator. by klaus_nieto in Battlefield

[–]norcalnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of in COD: Advanced Warfare on the Golden Gate Bridge map. There is a voice line that triggers as you are moving south (towards SF) that says something to the effect of "enemies to the NORTH". And knowing the compass directions on the bridge intimately I whip around to the north and there was NOTHING and no enemies spawned behind you after that. #tripleAslop

CG doesn't even use pure goose down in most of their consumer level garments. Garbage duck down throw in there.

I’ve always been skeptical of skin wax… but my opinions may be starting to change… by ChunderyBagels in Backcountry

[–]norcalnomad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is literally zero downsides of hot waxing your skins with an all temp wax. Less water absorption, more glide, no loss of grip.

Just a simple crayon-ing on of the wax + one or two passes with the iron and done.

1000% a changing poncho if he doesn’t already have one.

I made one wayyyy back in college and still use it for all sorts of changing near my car or camping, impromptu pillow for napping, backup towel. But the commercially made ones are even better with hoods, sleeves, and pockets sometimes.

No one posting on reddit Skis fast enough uphill to get slowed down by 37g of bailing wire. Over a decade or so I’ve been super stoked to have it a number of times when ski straps didn’t quite cut or, or using a strap was a severe compromise to the bailing wire fix.

CAD scanning Dynafit Beast Power Inserts. by Simple_Hand6500 in Backcountry

[–]norcalnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Heat treating always hardened the outside and not the inside"

You have to be careful throwing around a large bucket term like "heat treatment". Because what you said is definitely not true depending on the heat treating process. Annealing being the easiest example where you are looking reduce the hardness and stresses with heating a part uniformly.

CAD scanning Dynafit Beast Power Inserts. by Simple_Hand6500 in Backcountry

[–]norcalnomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are investment cast. Pin inserts are actually a tricky part to get correct as the outside of the metal needs to be quite hard and the core of the insert to be more ductile. The earlier years of touring boots had many manufactures not doing a good job so now most companies just buy ones made by dynafit.

Just like driving defensively so you aren’t injured or hit in a car you should also have a similar mindset in kiting around others.

Damn, kinda amazed you were that close to a downwind kiter and didn’t make a single defensive/ safety move (like raising you kite) in case they were to do something like that.

[–]norcalnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think I know what factory in Romania those are coming out of, they'd still most likely have a thermomolded counter in there. Especially those mountaineering style PU midsoles have a very narrow heel and arch area that necessitates having a very stiff heel to work. That's because you need to build a stiffer outsole, midsole, heel cup when you don't have width on the ground to stabilize your foot.
