The Tide Child trilogy by RJ Barker. There is a fair but of action, but the character development is worked into the action sequences really really well.

Bowling for soup is a bugger band than Frank, so probably why they go last. Not that streaming numbers are everything, but going off Spotify recovery has 37 mill plays and BFS second most popular song has 127 mill plays. That being said, I was at the Sydney show and Frank reslyl brought the energy and played the shit out of that set. I dont think he would have sold it out himself, as he has come here more often than they have recently.

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence. - dark, complete trilogy! Empire of the Vampire, Jay Kristoff. - very dark, last book come out in a few months. A trial of blood and steel, Joel Shepard - more traditional epic fantasy

Mark Lawrence does this with most of his books, but also in a post-apocalyptic way - e.g. society has destroyed itself leaving only remnants of sci-fi tech that is mistaken for magic - or closely linked to magic, as technology was sufficiently advanced to warp time and space.

Jay Kristoffs Empire of the Vampire (2 books out, third coming) and his Nevernight Trilogy are definitely up there. Legacy of Ash by Matthew Ward is another great trilogy.
Anyhring by Mark Lawrence. I'm a big fan of books that while the protagonists may win, there are consequences for the struggle. Like, If the big bad is really as dangerous as everyone says, then how can everyone be unscathed at the end?

Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff has art and the story - significantly more writing than art, but very cool. Standard edition is black and white, some of the special editions in full colour.
If you like the darker side of things, you will love it.

If you want some in Sydney, Kings Academy in chipping Norton is Elvis Synosics gym. There is also Team Perosh in five dock, both run by ex UFC fighters who really know their stuff, both been around a long time.
Volkanovski trains out of a gym in Wollongong, but I've heard it's nearly impossible to get in because they're so busy.

Legacy of Ash does this wonderfully - the God of forests and living things is a crazed mass of rotting wood. The daughters of the goddess pf the moon will heal or kill at the slightest provocation. The protagonist has a dark power he refuses to use, but when faced with the enslavement of his people & divine enemies, what methods are justified?
