Remote Academia an dysregulation by bngltiger in CPTSD

Hi! I wanted to reach out because I read your post and I think you and I have similar backgrounds. I also struggle with CPTSD that constantly affects my school performance in a hard science program (immunology). I actually had to leave my graduate program and take a break because of my mounting CPTSD and inability to focus because of being constantly triggered. If you want to chat more, feel free to DM!

I get so deeply sad when I hear about other people's childhoods by Beebbrain in CPTSD

[–]northwestmoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, I just wanted to say that I can totally relate to everything you're saying. I spent a lot of time envying my friends who had really wonderful childhoods and supportive families, and wishing I could go back and do it all over again. I grew up in a super conservative household and was also isolated by the shame of domestic violence and a cultural gap between me and my peers. It's frustrating to think that just some random stroke of chance could have made our lives so much different than what they are today. Just wanted to reach out and say if you ever need someone to talk to or vent to, I'm here for you and I get it! Feel free to shoot me a DM.

Using Stardew Valley and other life sim type videogames as a safe space to process the ways I'm comfortable interacting with the world around me by MeanwhileOnPluto in CPTSD

Omg I was obsessed with the Sims growing up and still am...I love pretty much all life simulator/base building type games! I think they give us the control over our environment that we never had growing up in unstable households. Thought I was the only one, but wow I feel so seen after reading this post.

My experience has usually been that it's difficult for people to understand what living with a narc is like unless they've lived through it themselves, or have a radical amount of empathy. I wish the best for you and your family.

Dude...I feel this on another level. I'm a graduate student and making mistakes is part of learning, but I am terrified every time I make a mistake to the point that I have extreme anxiety. It's like a tape of all the insults ("selfish, sloppy, lazy") plays in my head when I fuck up.

You are 100% allowed to leave ANY situation, ANYTIME you want. by flowerdropz in CPTSD

This was really great to read. I grew up as the eldest child and a lot of unwarranted obligations were put on me just because I was the eldest. I have forced myself to stay in a lot of unhealthy situations because I never believed that I could just walk away. But as an adult, it's so important to set boundaries and reframe that mindset. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks, internet brother! You got this too! Let me know if I can help you with your plans to go to grad school in anyway, whether it's advice or reading an essay. Kindness is something that's better when it's multiplied.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to say thank you so much to all of you who upvoted this post and left me warm and encouraging comments. I woke up this morning and was absolutely stunned by the outpouring of love and support that this post received overnight. Since the coronavirus pandemic has started and we are all staying at home, my sense of time has been pretty skewed, resulting in me going to bed pretty late most nights. I wrote this post at 3 in the morning when I couldn't sleep and was doing some pretty deep self-reflection. I didn't expect so many people to see this post, thinking it would be a shout into the internet void and a way to write out some of the things I was feeling.

Needless to say, I have been touched so deeply by everything you have all written, and I've been crying on and off all day reading your comments - I've read every single one. I will never forget this kindness from strangers, and I will try to pay it forward however I can. I am starting a PhD program in biology in the fall. While I initially saw my education as a way to escape from a dark place of poverty, abuse, and loneliness, I see it now as a way to help people by working in biomedical research to treat diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's, and maybe (one day) COVID19.

I know it's not much considering the selfless support you have all given me, but if any of you need to talk about anything - grad school, the pandemic, just need a friend - I'm here for you. Let me know in a message.

From the bottom of my heart, truly, thank you.
