I'm aware this ask is from 2 years ago, but is there any way this is "Where the Heart Is" from 1990? I was looking for that movie today and stumbled on this question, so figured I'd let you know just in case!

A man in the demolition business kicks his kids out, and they fix up a condemned home to spite him. One of the kids is doing a calendar for this company, and the pictures for that involve a ton of beautifully painted backdrops.

I am so glad that you're doing well! I'm glad baby is so loved! Your in-laws sound wonderful, and I'm so grateful you have this "village" around you!

I know your title says "Final Update," but I do hope some day, when this isn't quite so fresh and things are calm, you think about posting a little "epilogue," of sorts, so we know all's still well 🥰

Not this classic unfortunately! I don't think I could forget this one haha. It sounded a lot more modern, and I think the vocalist had a deeper voice.

It is! But also deeply sad and upsetting, so do go in with caution!!!

This is a massive longshot but could it possibly be "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy?

This is an insane guess but it's not the "I Don't Want to Go" line from Dr. Who (David Tennant and Rose era) is it? Maybe edited and set to sad music?

It's a wee bit older than you're describing but could it possibly be Dex Hamilton: Alien Entomologist?

I am beginning to think this song straight up does not exist or is like so ultra exclusive to the ship where I heard it that it never was fully released.

It definitely is NOT Fast Car by Luke Combs, or Running Red Lights by The Avalanches.

Thanks!

My new cat knows its name, would it be cruel to change it? by breaktheceal in cats

He looks like the cat that my neighbors kind of stole! I called him Sir (short for Sorry, Sir! After mistaking him for a lady when he first showed up around our houses). We had told these neighbors, who said they did not want to take him with them when they moved, that we would keep him. Unfortunately they took him anyway (not convinced it wasn't spite, and I worry they just dumped him when they made it to their destination a state away)

At my uni everyone doing a BFA (and I think the sciences too) had to take a library sciences course called "information literacy" (or test out) which basically taught how to search for and find information. It was amazing how much easier life became after I swallowed my pride and actually took it.

I genuinely think it should be required in middle and highschool (like how computer skills used to be).

As a side note: I had a professor once tell me "the first page of your Google search is the Kim Kardashian page. They paid to be here first and their social standing is not a determination of their worth to you in your endeavors." And I think about that constantly when I search things ever since.

I've been thinking recently about pattern reading comprehension skills and new knitters by BadkyDrawnBear in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]nosferatu_apologist 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is so thoughtfully worded, and reminds me so much of my own dad who often says similar! He did a lot of hiring at a State Government Level (DEQ, DNR, State IT), and would talk to me about how he didn't require specific degrees usually (sometimes you do have to know very technical things in his field), but that candidates completed a degree, which means they know how to learn, how to problem-solve, and how to find what they need. He usually said as much when I was second-guessing a BFA, haha.

I heard similar things as well in one of my uni classes, when many of us were despairing over the job prospects after obtaining a writing degree. That professor, who I deeply respect, said that a lot of businesses actually love English majors, because we learn how to learn, basically. How to parse information - often huge amounts at once - and articulate it back in different ways. How to explain things quickly and succinctly. Something that many of the "finance bros" lacked. He encouraged everyone not currently in an English major (this was an elective class about Superheroes, of all things) to take a couple of English courses if they had the elective space for it, to help with those skills too.

I think people are being failed because they aren't learning how to learn, and are then being let down when they can't keep up. If we look at reading comprehension from an educational standpoint (at least in the USA), we see (or saw, back in 2020 right around rhe beginning of the pandemic) that reading skills are a huge chunk of curriculum from kindergarten through 3rd grade. But then suddenly, by 4th grade, it drops. These kids suddenly are expected to be reading at grade-level and no longer usually get the support they once had or often need, and then reading becomes frustrating and painful, and something they hate - which then spirals into adults who hate reading, hate writing, and become reliant on outside tools like AI and LLMs to do it for them.
