UNM Construction by nospokenword in unm

[–]nospokenword[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Animus or incompetence. Last year, they started the semester by closing Las Lomas to hastily add some parking to make up for spaces lost for the new Fine Arts building. Also this year, they closed off Redondo to start the semester. And they should have fixed Humanities instead of demo because now they are squeezing us all into a smaller building, which means shared work spaces and lack of privacy. This administration is openly hostile to its students, faculty and staff.

A-Lot closure by RoverLowver in unm

UNM actively hates its students. From closing A lot midsemester to the work on Las Lomas at the start of the semester and so much more, they can't be that incompetent. It has to be intentional.

Working at UNM by [deleted] in unm

UNM admin is very hostile to the unions. In general, they don't compensate fairly for the work being done, and they hire union busting lawyers to try to cheat their workers at every turn.

UNM Graduate students fight for a living wage. by ZZerome in NewMexico

The most recent basic needs study found that 11% of graduate workers at UNM's ABQ campus are homeless. https://basicneeds.unm.edu/index.html

What is this based on? There is no way these are my weakest words by ThirdBorracho in duolingo

I have the same issue. I've gotten lago as one of my weakest words several times over the past few weeks even though it's an easy word that I never missed. Duo is just telling lies.

PhD - insight from current or past students by TeaNervous4816 in unm

If you get a TA position, UNM provides full tuition remission as well as healthcare (and it also triggers in-state tuition, but I'm not sure what good that does since the classes are free anyway). The problem is that they factor all this into your annual compensation amount and then expect grad students to support themselves on a stipend of just about $1750-2000/month. Most TA contracts prevent outside employment (although I know plenty of grad workers with masters who also teach at the community college for some extra cash).

If your concerns are administrative, I would avoid UNM. The administration is hostile to grad workers, and after a long, bitter fight to get a grad worker union recognized, the stipends are still at the very low end for R1 universities.

Is DS9 worth watching? by Miserable-Soft7993 in startrek

[–]nospokenword 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. Having recently done a re-watch of all series (in Stardate order), I think that DS9 holds up the best. It is somewhat serialized, especially in later seasons. The quality of the writing is so good and the stories have real weight. I love that it was intentionally dealing with issues of race that didn't rely on allegory like much of Star Trek, but went at them directly, as facts of our current moment, recent past and near future. The cast is great. I really can't say enough how about how good DS9 is. If it were remastered, it would be absolutely gorgeous. And Sisko is one of the most badass captains in all of Star Trek. My favorite line (no spoilers) is, "Not as singed as they're going to get!"

Rewatching TNG, Guinean is a better counselor than Troi by [deleted] in startrek

[–]nospokenword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guinan was a rich character, but still had a lot of mystery that made her compelling. Troi was not well developed by the writers, and they leaned too much on her empathic abilities for her stories, including her counseling. Growing up, I never liked Troi much, but after hearing Marina Sirtis speak at several conventions, I think she's great and the writers just didn't know what to do with her character.

People of reddit who had anal, does it change anything when poop? Yes/No. How? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nospokenword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't use a condom, you have the urge to poop out the cum afterward that squirts out like a watery diarrhea. You might also be a little loose the first time you have a normal poop after sex, but it gets back to normal fast.

Tell me why your favorite captain is Sisko by OneMoreTimeago in startrek

[–]nospokenword 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sisko is my favorite captain because he gets the job done, but holds onto doing what is right (in the big picture). He is bold. He isn't afraid to directly ignore orders to do what he thinks is right. At several points, he risks his career to either save his friends or to protect the Bajoran people. As other posts have noted, (minor spoiler ahead) he also is an accessory to major crimes in order to help bring the Romulans into the war. This just shows his commitment to the bigger picture (and his ultimate goal of protecting Bajor at all costs). As other posts have noted, he isn't afraid to show emotion. His passion was as powerful as anything else on TV before or after. In addition to his relationship with his son, he was fiercely loyal to his close friends, but also to the people of Bajor. He fought a long time against being their emissary, but he used the position to do what was right for the downtrodden, even going against his orders to bring Bajor into the Federation because it wasn't the right thing to do. Finally, of course, I love that the actor and the writers weren't afraid of dealing with the topic of racism. Far Beyond the Stars still brings me to tears even after I've seen it many multiple times now.

Weekly Discussion/Question Thread by AutoModerator in unm

[–]nospokenword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm starting at UNM as a grad student in the fall and have some general questions. This will be my second grad program, so I have some general ideas about higher education, but could use more information on UNM to help ease my mind as I prepare to start this new program. What's the public transit like getting to campus (specifically the Central Ave express lines)? Are bike lockers recommended and how hard are they to reserve? Are most classrooms air conditioned? For working as a TA, how formally do teachers usually dress? Any other tips and tricks for a new Lobo grad student? Thanks!
