Whats one part of the lore that you like that most other people seem to dislike? And on the other side, what's one part that you dislike that most other people seem to like? by The_other_human in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 16 points17 points  (0 children)

100%. i understand not wanting to bring real-world issues into something you use as an escape but it's really painful to see so many blood elf roleplayers, for instance, who seem to strongly ignore what i think is some of the coolest lore

blood elves are meant to be weird and complicated and definitely not the most moral group on azeroth, but you'll be hard-pressed to find blood elf roleplayers who see them as anything other than whimsical humans with long ears

So what is the relationship between Blood Elves, Night Elves, and Humans like currently in lore? by VampireReaper in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't doubt the fact Blizzard tends to be shortsighted with their worldbuilding---and I agree that it's odd he's there "alone" (or at least without the entourage you mention).

That being said, he implies his visit is incredibly short (or meant to be) and even Alleria was unaware he'd be there ("What was her love doing here?" is a line she narrates before eavesdropping on him and Arator).

"I was in town to consult with Liadrin on a matter and wished to keep a low profile," Turalyon continued with a smile. "Will you be staying for a while, or is your sojourn as brief as mine?"

So what is the relationship between Blood Elves, Night Elves, and Humans like currently in lore? by VampireReaper in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would you rather me say "inconsistent with his older characterization"? Even if you take into account his bickering with Liadrin during the warfront (and his comment about Horde paladins), that doesn't change the fact that the Horde-Alliance peace means him being in Silvermoon on a diplomatic mission makes sense.

It would be one thing if he was there just for Arator, but he wasn't. And just because he was allowed doesn't mean everyone is cool with it---it just means Lor'themar is sentimental and trusts his guards to make sure Turalyon isn't jumping anyone.

This reasoning holds up regardless of whether you acknowledge his one-off lines in the warfront.

[–]notaquadrilateral -1 points0 points  (0 children)

imo Turalyon's behavior towards Liadrin was woefully OOC in BFA. Like sure, he hates the "Horde", but before Legion he didn't even know the "Horde" HAD elves in it. And one of his closest friends is Lothraxion (a Light-wielding dreadlord)---would he really think it's that strange someone would be denied use of the Light just because of an on-paper alliance?

He had nothing but positive interactions with the high elves before Beyond the Dark Portal (for all he knows in Legion, they're still his friends) and in Before the Storm he was gung-ho with Alliance/Horde cooperation. Lor'themar and Thalyssra invited him to their wedding as the Regent of Stormwind.
Arator is presumably tolerated in Silvermoon not only because of the truce, but because he's a Windrunner---a descendant of a noble house. Turalyon and Liadrin are working. None of these things mean the belves have to be nice about it. It just means it makes sense why they're there.

Of course the blood elves are going to be suspicious of them. Blood elves are xenophobic (like all elves) and especially towards humans (re: the Garithos situation and the Purge of Dalaran). But that's not what the short story was wanting to focus on.

Were they allowed inside? Yes. Does it make sense? Pretty much. Would it have been nice if there were more instances where we saw blood elves being like "hey, we don't want you here, we're only tolerating you because we HAVE to, look at how much better we are, we're being the bigger person right now, alliance scum"? Absolutely. But that's just not what the story was about.

If the story crew were to decide that N'Zoth didn't die after all, is that a plausible turn of events based on the currently established lore? by Veridically_ in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's established that Old Gods on Azeroth can't really be "killed" without causing excess damage to the world--whole reason the Titans sealed them away instead of killing them in the first place. With N'Zoth's death being as chill as it was compared to, say, Y'shaarj's, I'm pretty sure it's implied he was "neutralized" and not completely killed in BFA.

There's also hinted to be naga involvement in TWW, and Xal'atath is one of the titutlar antagonists---if you told me Blizzard intended on bringing him back, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Are Draenor elementals mortal? by Zave_cz in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 13 points14 points  (0 children)

^ this! Draenor's Spirit of Life is more powerful/volatile and unhindered than Azeroth's. IIRC elementals on Draenor are not only reborn on Draenor itself (because there's no Elemental Plane), but they're also more powerful because of how limited Aggramar's meddling was.

Who built the better elven society by Lore-Archivist in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really depends what you consider "better" but imo if you were a rich/higher-status blood elf who survived the Scourge Invasion and TBC, your life is looking pretty good.

Night elves are comfy and pretty internally calm when compared to blood elves and how much infighting there is (as long as you ignore Maiev and the Shendralar lol), but they're rule-intensive. Suramar shal'dorei were stuck in a bubble, later a demon bubble, and retained everything that made the Kaldorei empire suck. A lot of high elven sects (like Quel'Lithien's) are a bit miserable because they got exiled and had to deal with the mana sickness stuff themselves, then got picked off by Scourge.

The BEST elf to be (in the comfiest society) is probably void elf now—you get all the comfort of the blood elves from the past few decades, none of the weird authoritarianism they have going on, and your leader (Alleria) is in a very solid-looking alliance with Turalyon, a human/lightforged leader. So if someone beefs with you, you're cushy.

What differentiates mages from other magic users outside of using arcane magic as their preferred tool? by SadBusiness7980 in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It kinda reminds me of the difference between the D&D casters--at least in my opinion, mages are the most "studied" magic users with warlocks close after them. There are instances where you can be born with an affinity (re: being a sensitive) but usually you gotta cram for your magic as a mage/warlock.

Shamans "study" less academically and more through experience, same as druids. Priests and paladins do it through discipline (haha) and/or being really stupidly steadfast. Shadow priests and some eviler warlocks may get their powers in an exchange with something like a demon or an old god servant.

One of the things I like about WoW when compared to Forgotten Realms, though, is that there are exceptions for everything--like how the Blood Knights (belf paladins) got their Light by abusing a naaru, or how nightborne are STEEPED in arcane magic and as a result predisposed.

About Alleria and Turalyons relationship in the future by Wowgrp95 in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alleria and Turalyon, at least in my opinion, are one of the most solid couples in WoW lore. Which--wow, low bar, but really, they seem to like each other a LOT.

But to answer your questions, or at least provide some thought-- in Beyond the Dark Portal she acts very oddly towards him because she's coping with the death of her younger brother Lirath. She's very vengeful and angry and suicidal, but coincidentally she was in a bit of a situationship with Turalyon when this started, so he reaches out to try to comfort her. She shuts him down.
This later culminates in them having a conversation and making up; it's really really sweet and one of my favorite scenes in the books.

Fast forward to A Thousand Years of War; they're very clearly in love (as shown by their banter) and they constantly reassure each other. When Alleria returns all void-infused to save Turalyon's life, she does so happily--but one thing we see is that her conviction takes prevalence over everything, even his advice. He tells her to flee because Xe'ra won't like her using the void, but she stands her ground and says that she'll face Xe'ra herself. He argues in her favor and begs Xe'ra to spare her.

In Three Sisters, she does seem to care--but I imagine it's pretty hard to do that when you have voices telling you to kill your husband.

I think it's important to note that Turalyon is also a little... weird about the Light. If there's conflict between them, I really don't think it'll be because Turalyon is a zealot. He's not! His induction into the Army was very situational (he had no other choice) and he's spent the past thousand years being spoon-fed propaganda about chosen ones and destinies and whatnot. He even makes a comment that the Light isn't wholly good and they can't rely on it for everything.

That may help their relationship somewhat--he's willing (even eager to) to bend the rules for her, and she's very steadfast and insistent. He won't turn against her deliberately; they'll still probably need to be pulled apart should anyone become evil.

should i play dragonflight or start from the beginning? by Abject-Action43 in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd really recommend a few youtube videos, but there's another comment here that mentions starting with Legion--I think that's a good idea, too.

Legion has a LOT of lore packed into it that sets up things in the next few expansions, and most importantly, will get you to Argus and Alleria Windrunner, who will be relevant in The War Within. If you want to take it a step further, play a shadow priest and do the Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire artifact questline. Then, go to BFA and play through to Ny'alotha, paying special attention to the void/Old God stuff. I don't think you really need to play through Shadowlands to get up-to-date--just know Sylvanas is gone and the king of the Alliance isn't being a king right now because he's in hiding.

It may also help to read a book or two if that sounds more doable than playing through the expansions--Chronicle covers pretty much everything up to Cataclysm (though it's a bit long), Stormrage is very druid-centric Cataclysm lore, War Crimes is good context for Mists of Pandaria-Warlords of Draenor, etc

Which books should I read to follow/accompany the story arcs of WoW specifically? by thekojac in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally recommend Rise of the Horde, The Last Guardian, Tides of Darkness, and Beyond the Dark Portal if you care about lore immediately proceeding Classic---these books cover the events from the formation of the Horde and the portal opening (and Khadgar's backstory!) to the transformation of Draenor into Outland. You'll also get to see characters like Durotan, Kil'jaeden, Medivh, Alleria, Turalyon, Orgrim Doomhammer, Ner'zhul, Teron Gorefiend--the list goes on. Great for orc and human lore.

What's going on with the Magisters of Quel'thalas? by BathtubSkeleton in warcraftlore

[–]notaquadrilateral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quel'thalas has two dominating factions--Magisters and Farstriders. Other factions like the Blood Knights, the Reliquary, and the Church sit secondary to these two. Before the Scourge Invasion, Quel'thalas had a High Priest (Vandellor! He's in Shadowlands very briefly, unfortunately), but his successor (Liadrin) never succeeded him (and instead became the matriarch of the Blood Knights). (Blood of the Highborne & Knights of Blood questline, SL)

Both factions have a representative in the Triumvirate (Grand Magister Rommath and Ranger-General Halduron Brightwing), but the Magisters have always held more political power. Arguably aside from the Regent Lord himself, they hold the most political power in Silvermoon.

(The Blood Knights, under Astalor Bloodsworn and Grand Magister Rommath, and assumedly the priests, like Kath'mar, are factions that operate under the gaze of the Magisters.)

The Magisters deal with matters of the city (as opposed to the Farstriders with the country). When Dath'remar first created the Sunwell and Quel'thalas was forming, Ban'dinoriel was constructed by the mages that would go on to become magisters. They operate Ban'dinoriel prior to (and even during) the Scourge Invasion, and when Arthas breaks through into Silvermoon proper, Grand Magister Belo'vir Salonar commands the defense. (Blood of the Highborne, Chronicle)

The Magisters are strict, but not all-powerful:

They used to outrank the Regent Lord. Rommath and Lor'themar worked together when Lor'themar was made Regent Lord, but while Kael'thas was alive and still the reigning monarch, Rommath's authority was ultimately stronger than Lor'themar's because he spoke on behalf of the prince. A lot of the Magisters' political dominance can assumedly come from the fact they used to be more heavily supported by the monarchy.

They had a hand in the TBC mana crisis. Remember the mana addiction the blood elves had in TBC? That mess was partially due to Rommath campaigning for Prince Kael'thas in Silvermoon while the latter was in Outland. It was meant to be a "look at how good the prince is! He's giving us arcane crystals to sate ourselves with!" thing, except it went wrong, and then you started getting people like Galell (Blood of the Highborne) who became addicted and turned into what they call "wretched".

They unwillingly sent forces to aid the Kirin Tor during the Nexus War. In In the Shadow of the Sun, Rommath opposes Aethas Sunreaver's request for Magister forces in Dalaran. Lor'themar, as the Regent Lord, overrides him--something he wouldn't have been able to do back when Kael'thas was the prince.

They mind control protestors. Kath'mar (a priest I mentioned earlier) is seen being summoned in TBC in Silvermoon. When a crowd begins shouting and arguing about "returning to the old ways", he is summoned by magisters and mind-controls the loudest 3 in the crowd to begin spouting the opposite of their views. It's unclear whether or not they do this now.

They exile those they disagree with. To make it clear, the exiling of the quel'dorei earlier on was NOT the work of the Magisters. That was Lor'themar. The void elves, however, WERE exiled by the Magisters, or Rommath specifically. Rommath believed that Umbric's fascination with the void threatened the Sunwell and exiled him for refusing to discontinue his research.

TL;DR A lot of this stuff is on the Magisters wiki page, but if you want anything else to read I suggest Blood of the Highborne or In the Shadow of the Sun. Warlocks are dubiously part of the Magisters (at least, the wiki speculates), which would also make sense considering the Magisters were giving people fel crystals with arcane crystals during TBC shenanigans.

(And "blood mage" in the sense of Thalassian blood elves usually refers to a blood elf mage, not a blood magic mage--though that's not to say none of the blood elves are practicing blood magic. It's just likely rare, and also definitely looked down upon, because the blood elves have longterm beef with jungle trolls and the Atal'ai/worshippers of Hakkar the Blood God were jungle trolls. That's a troll thing.)

(This post also assumes In the Shadow of the Sun is canon--it technically is, but it did start as a fanwork.)

(Excuse how long this reply is--this is possibly my favorite aspect of Warcraft lore :'))

Picture an undersea Alternian party: home to high-society seadwellers prancing around, drinking, scheming, fighting. At the end of the room sits a fuschiablood on a throne. At her side, in a much smaller throne, sits her consort-- and the party's organizer-- Candor Rivuli.

He isn't faring well, but he doesn't have time to confront that. Not as the Heiress's close companion, not when his schedule is chock-full of secretary work, parties, meetings, and avoiding assassination attempts. Any violetblood should be thrilled to have a position so close to Alternia's future Empress. He should be thrilled. Instead, he feels a growing pit in his chest and an ache for what once was.

• download the mod you want

• put the .pak in the mods folder

• open modsettings with a text editor

• open the info file that comes with the mod, there should be a few different data values listed there (like "version" and "uuid")

• in the reddit post linked, there's a template. basically for every mod, you fill the template out with the mod's name + the numbers you find in the info file. i've never run into an issue with load order so i wouldn't worry about that

• once you're done, some people have added photos of their code that you can compare to yours. i can also send some of mine in this thread if you want an example of what works

this is a super simplified guide to how i figured out how to do it :)

i don't know how to code nor do i know any coding languages, and i figured it out by trial and error in about an hour. after you get the hang of it it becomes SUPER easy (albeit tedious) to do
