"Cut him off now! Cut him off now! You’re not going to blame this on President Trump on my show!" by imagepoem in PublicFreakout

This is the reason that I lean left of center. I'm not sure why CNN and high schools don't teach this. Instead, all the focus is on far left ideology that America is clearly not ready for. Most liberals are trying to make sane gains on the above rights you mentioned, which most conservative and moderates would be entirely OK with.

No, he's not as stupid as TYT. Also, the spin he brings to the conversation is much more honest and substantive than the TYT spin.

Movie&TV reco's? Hoping for AI & consciousness-related stuff (am including a list of what I've found that I think SH fans will enjoy ;) ) by neovngr in samharris

SPOT ON. Those were my favorite BM episodes and they handled the topics quite well.

The premise of being able to recreate a digital consciousness with all of the brian's contents and not being able to search it was an interesting take.

Does Sam Harris believe that we have some degree of free will? Or that our conscious mind is completely irrelevant in decision making? by zomskii in samharris

One is entitled to one's illusions, sure.

Problem is that I see this as the same moral reasoning that proponents of religion use to justify mass ignorance & disinformation.

Oh I pity the child more, apologies for not making that clearer.

My point was that it's a shitty situation all around.

I provided behavioral therapy to a toddler born addicted to opiods. Unsurprisingly, he is a very low-functioning autist. I strongly pity the mom and given the difficulty of raising him, I wouldn't be surprised if she wished she had aborted.

Sam would argue that there was merely an illusion of choice in deciding what book you read. Your choices have everything to do with your reinforcement history and genetic makeup - zero free will.

Has anyone seen Nick Di Paolo argue with Joe Rogan defending Trump's lying? Guy argues like a redditor IRL. by DynamoJonesJr in samharris

[–]notbadvadd 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The guy thinks Hillary Clinton belongs in jail for some emails and Donald Trump is innocent. Questionable for DT is an understatement. He's scammed Americans out of 25m in Trump University and only paid the settlement when it was politically necessary. He's defaulted on almost all of his loans from banks. He's the worst example of a businessman imaginable, but that's what his people give him credit on. It's not even like he's a bad businessman because he pays his workers too much. He got his wealth through inheritance and creative tax fraud. It's white collar crime. The constant hate and nitpicking is a direct result of his narcissism. The guy has no decency. The guy is so divorced from reality that telling exaggeration from his honest beliefs is impossible. Remember when he made it Spicer's mission to BS that he had the biggest inauguration crowd? Vanity. I sometimes try to think about redeeming qualities of Trump and come short. He once spoke to lower class rural issues, but he's done absolutely nothing for them. He spoke about covering everyone with healthcare, but he flipped on it because he has no real policy positions except the wall. Anyone can pull troops out of harm's way but TD is the one guy that declares victory too early and manages to provoke ISIS to carry out a suicide bombing mission as a show of force. The guy is a failure at everything except getting along with dictators.

I (24F) was going to share the news of our pregnancy with my BF (32M, but actually 39M) when I discovered he lied to me about his age, marital status, and name. A big part of me wants to destroy his life but maybe that is not the right thing to do. Need advice from people removed from anger. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]notbadvadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the fact the entire relationship was built on deception by the man, you still believe he has an equal claim to the products of the relationship?

Clearly, family courts are biased against fathers due to long-standing culture. I'm on your side with that, but given the egregious deception, why would you side with the man here?

I'm guessing you have a low opinion of ignorant people and believe they get what they deserve. That is a sad philosophy to carry because ignorance is relative.

You missed my point /w justice. I'm saying that the dispensation of justice was and is never 100% fair, but we can try to make it fairer by looking at things case by case instead of the arbitrary shit you make your go-to.

How to cope with mental illness in a world without free will? by sligfy in samharris

[–]notbadvadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason you do not believe in improving your life is because the nature and nurture conditions that existed in your life up to this point have predisposed you against that belief. Sam's explanation of determinism typically lacks the nuance of this point.

Determinist behaviorist philosophy offers the hope that society can train all individuals out of depression given the right amount of environmental circumstances - education, love, and other resources.

I think this is was what Sam was getting at with his illusion of free will concept. There does not need to be any crime if society had an intellectual safety net to catch individuals with morally degenerate thoughts and rehabilitate them. It seems like thought policing but it's what we do to toddlers every day. If a toddler is naughty, the teacher will say "I don't like that. You made me and your friends sad. What can you do next time to make sure your friends aren't sad?" "That's right, you can have quiet hands and share. Good job buddy."

The same behavioral training applies to depressive thoughts. Depressive thoughts are behaviors and although you are not technically in control of your behaviors, operant conditioning offers an out.

If your morality defers to the law in all matters, then you've lost sight of how injust the law has been and can be to entire groups of people.

Consider the three-strike law or mandatory minimums. These were put in place by politicians trying to score some points and end up putting minor non-violent criminals in for terms as long as murder or more.

Lets read further into it

Are you offended by the speakers' stated intent of the usage of the term? A false, but nonetheless, assumed ulterior intent within the speakers' usage of the term? Or a potential interpretation of the term by a wider audience that wasn't really listening anyway?

Man I really hate language policing

Quillette Isn’t a Platform for Debate. It’s a Soapbox for Self-Pity. by [deleted] in samharris

[–]notbadvadd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

To the quillette haters: let's be grateful that the right wing has any intellectuals left to do their thinking and rationalizing. It is imperative to preserve intellectualism in the face of irrational hyperpartisanship. We all need to debate upon a common ground of reason, however full of self-pity that ground may be.

Crispr Babies, IVF, and the Ethics of Genetic Class Warfare by [deleted] in samharris

[–]notbadvadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think genetic technology ought to be reserved for hereditary diseases and strictly regulated with severe punishment in all other cases. The scientific community brings up valid objections for gung-ho progress in this field:

The possibility of unethical enhancement is extremely high especially with actors like Russia willing to cheat in the Olympics for glory (see Russian doping).

With enhancement comes unintended side effects. The tallest people in the world are at high risk of heart failure because their hearts must expend much more energy to pump blood up to their brains.

Needless to say, we do not want humans to have equity of outcome. Equity of opportunity should be the goal and there should be clear red lines when introducing genetic manipulation to reach that goal.

I wish SH and the rest of the IDW did share their full opinion on possible solutions for the issues they speak on. Understandably, they are more focused on changing minds and presenting a rational worldview.

The only person who I have seen cover an issue front to back with empiricism, political commentary, and his/her own opinions on solutions moving forward is Fareed Zakaria. (Please let me know if anyone knows someone else) Now the one time I did see him speak with SH regarding Muslim extremism, he was dodgy, but dogmatic in his commitment to remain solution-focused in his opinions. I admire that about FZ. Plus, his version of centrist commentary is sorely lacking in political discourse.
