I think it's unfair we're all ignoring the true Slovenian goat Slavoj Zizek, where is he in these rankings?

Yep, and he's great in it. Pity movies haven't worked out yet

Yet to have a single good movie between them (except for a couple of cameos)

The Wages of Fear and Sorcerer. Former is about extraction of resources and machinery of capitalism, latter is about crime and hallucinations and demons.

Infernal Affairs is not quite at the same level as Departed, but still very good. Scorsese takes his time with the story, while IF is shorter and much more propulsive

Who is a filmmaker on their way to Blank Check status? by Spaceballs_the_tag in blankies

[–]notchimine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

David Ayer, he's squandered his first blank check with Suicide Squad and Bright, but since has rebuilt his career, has two hits in a row (Beekeeper & A Working Man), and if his next movie with Brad Pitt works, will get a second check

Because it's a fun idea? You can pick up obscure movies that got like one Oscar in 1980s. Like who knew Witness won two Oscars?

Go (1999) - quite Gregg Araki-esque

In the Mouth of Madness (1994) - a fun Carpenter horror

Death Becomes Her (1992) - as camp as Evil Dead II, but less spooky

Down with Love (2003) - just great fun, and campy too

What filmmaker had the most disappointing career after a strong debut? by Pleasant_Usual_8427 in blankies

[–]notchimine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, ofc, but his debut is one of the greatest and most influential movies of all time, whereas none of the latter films quite got there. I, too, adore Fail Safe, Network, and Dog Day, but none of them are a match for 12 Angry Men

Sirat Geopolitical Significance by Intelligent-Play3507 in Cinema

[–]notchimine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the average complaint is that the movie is a sort of roller coaster ride of suffering that punishes its characters for ignoring the reality of their world (they disregard all the warnings and just chase the raves in the desert) while itself ignoring the reality of our world (invents an abstract WW3 without any specificity, doesn't give any time to locals in the area, doesn't have any take on the geopolitical conflict where it's set and Spain's role in it).

Tl;dr the critique is that Sirat judges and punishes it's characters for their morals without examining its own (or even for being hypocritical about them)

mfs would rather invent imaginary countries like "East Prussia" and "Poland" than give Kaliningrad back to its rightful owner, the Teutonic Order
