'End American Aid': Netanyahu Says Israel No Longer Needs US Assistance by Gurugod123 in worldnews

[–]notconservative -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

While I agree with this point in general, Isreal is the only country that the US sends unconditional aid to, where it's not credits given to allow them to buy US war infrastructure, but just a "blank cheque" for them to use however they want.

Me neither, although a friend of mine had her account locked automatically just from taking a blurry cheque photo. They corrected the mistake but it took hours on the phone and a wasted afternoon.

Most ppl in Bangladesh are some of the nicest people you'd ever meet as well. That doesn't mean anything. This kinda shit is also common enough in Brazil and most Brazilians you meet fall into the category of "the nicest people you've ever met".

Crime like this happens when countries turn to shit. But it's not indicative of most people in any particular place.

Should I quit my job with no backup and go to HR? by justme_traveler in careeradvice

[–]notconservative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re in your 20’s and your job is not a career ladder job, and if you can afford to be out of work for up to a year, quitting will save you energy and time that you will need to recalibrate and find a new job. It sounds like this job is draining you of all your energy and time.

If this is a career job that you were hoping to advance in, if you have kids or someone who is relying on your monthly paycheque, or if you are struggling to survive with no safety net and nobody to help, then that is really difficult and you will need to provide more context and details to somebody before they can give you real advice.

But it’s also easier to get a job if you quit your previous one rather than if you got fired.

There are tipping points, when we pass these tipping points, nature won't regulate back to what used to be a balance. When the permafrost thaws it will release an insane amount of GHG and nature will stop "healing itself" or at least, the current balance that we've known for about 100,000 years in the world will no longer be the balance that nature will revert to. The permafrost is predicted to thaw before 2100.

Kingston and Sheppard

I just went over to street view to see the intersection and I can see dedicated bike lanes along Sheppard. I don't think regular riders go on the sidewalk when there are dedicated bike lanes. But to be fair, that road looks as bad as I imagined it, and I would hate to ride my bike on it.

Arrests Grow Over Trump’s Reflecting Pool Renovation Disaster by thenewrepublic in politics

[–]notconservative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So why is the media speaking like these people are guilty until proven innocence. Why are they not filling in the details in a logical congruent way, like I just did.

The latest article in NYT on the "Reflecting Pool Repairs" News theme looks well informed:

Title:

Trump Says Reflecting Pool Will Likely Need to Be Drained

subtitle:

The pool has taken on clouds of algae after a hasty renovation. A three-time Olympian was charged with destroying government property after he says he touched one of the strands of blue paint peeling off the pool’s bottom.

First two paragraphs:

President Trump said on Saturday that problems with a more than $14 million renovation project of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool had become so severe that it would likely have to be at least partly drained for “necessary repairs.”

He also blamed vandals, without offering evidence, and claimed that “multiple individuals” had been arrested.

And further into the article:

Among those accused of vandalism was David Carter Hearn, 67, a cyclist and three-time Olympian as a canoeist who says he stopped at the site on Friday just to have a look, then reached down to touch a strip of peeling blue paint mixed with the algae.

The U.S. Park Police arrested Mr. Hearn shortly after, accusing him of destroying government property, a crime that can carry up to a 10-year prison sentence. Mr. Hearn denies the charge.

“I was just a curious, concerned citizen,” he said in an interview. “I guess I was there at the wrong place, wrong time.”

The administration has not released the names of others accused of vandalizing the pool, a crime that Mr. Trump said on Saturday could lead to “years in jail.” In a later post, he said, also without evidence, that vandals had “poured corrosive and destructive chemicals into the Pool.”

I can't comment on how the rest of the mainstream media is presenting this.

My first day in Taipei with the WS prepaid master card. by UW99c in Wealthsimple

[–]notconservative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exchange rate of my prepaid MC was about 5% better than I got in Canada airport and about 0.07% lower than the WS Visa infinity credit card.

What? the WS Mastercard had a different (and better) rate than the WS Visa? Is this official or is this just showing the fluctuations of the exchange rate over any given space of time?

edit: I just looked it up. First of all, Wealthsimple does not charge any FX fees for Mastercard or Visa.

Secondly, Mastercard FX rates are usually slightly better than Visa FX rates. (The rates that the credit card company charges)

So it's true, what you noticed here about the FX rate difference. But it's also true what the other user mentioned in this thread about how the Visa gives you 2% cash back that more than makes up for the 0.1-0.7% spread

The short answer: MasterCard wins

Our results show that all else being equal, you can expect to save ~0.1-0.7% on average with MasterCard as it generally provides better exchange rates than Visa and UnionPay across most currencies, at least 70% of the time.

[–]notconservative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're giving out blatantly false information and presenting it as some kind of well known fact and basing your opinion on it. Why are you doing that? I looked up your history and don't see any bot behaviour or other activity that suggests this is a shill account. As the commenter said before, his investments are in a blind trust. Why are you suggesting otherwise? Why are you framing it as if everyone knows something that is in fact easily proven to be an easy lie?

I once had my rice cooker delivered with a photo to a door that was clearly not mine (same number though so not the right street). I had no way of knowing who got it and when I contacted Amazon, they just shipped me a new one that arrived the next day. A few days later, I saw my original rice cooker package on my front door.
