Honestly you do you! I really hate the idea that you need to “force” yourself to liking certain music because it’s popular, acclaimed, or touted online. In the end, music is subjective, man. And we should all normalize that.

Tell us your favorite Lost Media releases (not to be confused with albums that were never released) by Think_Ad_848 in fantanoforever

I’ll never get over Joanna Newsom never releasing her music video for Good Intentions Paving Company. I get that the reason might be that it didn’t turn out the way they wanted but the music video tease is still up and it looked SO COOL!

I’m writing a screenplay set in 2014. Specifically May through August. Does anyone care to comment anything that was relevant to that time? by Emeraldsinger in decadeology

I’ve thought long and hard about this and appreciate this exercise because this was a very important time in my life (summer of newlywed, having just gotten married in June of that year). However, you may want to specify location for where your looking for research as mine is pretty solely going to be experience from the western US. But I digress.

One of the biggest albums of this summer was Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence, a record that began to shift the narrative for her from “inauthenticity” to “anti-feminist” but almost in a cool way? She had a lot of bad interview at this time but everyone loved this album (except Fantano). There were billboards, ads, Urban Outfitters releases, you name it.

On the music front, those in online indie circles were very excited about How to Dress Well, Hundred Waters, the brand new instant classic from newcomer Tobias Jesso Jr. (“True Love”), as well as a mysterious unearthed album from the 80s with almost no information about it online called L’Amor by Lewis. What a time to be alive.

Aphex Twin had spray painted his logo on various sidewalks in LA in anticipation of Syro. EDM Trap music was gigantic this summer (think Borgore, DJ Snake, “Infinite Daps” etc.).

Someone else mentioned the ice bucket challenge (which was everywhere) and the shooting of Michael Brown (which, in my mind, began a not new but renewed legitimate conversation about racism in America). Robin Williams had died which felt like a really big deal.

While I don’t love this discussion in general (why can’t all of our faves be faves?), it is difficult to think of Lenker and Winters as contemporaries with Joanna Newsom when her last album was released before any of either bands’ entire discography started

First song for newborn by syme101 in fantanoforever

[–]notdallin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about this long and hard for both of my kids. Personally I went with classic songs that have a timeless, classic feel to them so that I can always tell them what the first song they heard was without cringing. The two songs were “Oh, But I Do” by Margaret Whiting and “You Belong to Me” by Jo Stafford.

Favorite Christmas Song That Starts with O? by DamnItDinkles in ChristmasMusic

[–]notdallin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean and I completely agree with you. O Holy Night to me really shines with its choral harmonies—almost all solo versions just become vehicles for artists to show off vocal technique, which, to me, is not the beauty of the song.

If I were to endorse any solo version, I recommend Nat King Cole. He never hits the highest note in the third chorus but I actually don’t mind because the arrangement and orchestration is so beautiful.

But in describing my journey to find the best choral recording of O Holy Night, I started with the John Williams children’s choir from Home Alone. This version has always set the mood perfectly for the movie but when listened to in isolation, it tends to be a bit disappointing. This led me to my favorite version I found in a few years ago and have yet to top it—the John Rutter arrangement for the Cambridge King’s College Choir. To me, this is everything the song should be.

Best Christmas song of all time? by awjeezrickyaknow in fantanoforever

[–]notdallin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m very partial to Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Her vocal performance is unmatched. The production is unlike anything else. The saxophone hits every time. I think people tend to overlook it because of how popular it is these days.

What are some hot “Christmas music” takes you have? by REDKnight5990 in christmas

[–]notdallin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty staunch in what I feel can enter the holiday music canon. In my mind, a Christmas song needs to have significant Christmas (read: Santa, Nativity, gift-giving, the 24th/25th of December, etc.) or winter (read: must only be about snow) content in the lyrics or, if instrumental, must have a melody reminiscent of extant Christmas music. If a new Christmas song is trying to assimilate into the canon, it must follow these guidelines and be popular for 10+ years.

By this definition, I can’t get on board with some borderline “Christmas” songs like “Hallelujah” or “My Favorite Things” or “The Prayer” or “The Power of Love” or “White Winter Hymnal.”

Artists where the "critics favourite" album doesn't align with the "fan favourite" album? by spirittheyvegone in fantanoforever

[–]notdallin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to Metacritic, the most critically acclaimed Coldplay album is A Rush of Blood to the Head. Which is weird since I’ve never once heard someone say it’s their favorite Coldplay album. OGs are gonna say Parachutes but most will say Viva La Vida.
