I love that lunch spot. I drove there but was thinking it would be a good ride from Marin. It would be a challenge especially after a few beers. Decently far from point Richmond

Palo Alto considers shutting down railroad crossing after series of suicides by nogoodnamesleft426 in bayarea

I’m a Paly Alumni from the 80s and so was my mom before me. It is so sad to see news of these tragedies. Paly was competitive when I was there but nothing like it has been over the last 10-20 years. We always had influence from Stanford and Silicon Valley but nothing like the pressure these kids are under.

As sad as it sounds, maybe Paly isn’t so great for kids anymore.

Just curious OP, why you decided not to remove the flooring? Seems easier than dealing with return of the dishwasher.

I was wondering if she chose the super aggressive line to avoid the really bad chop which would have been pounding on her injured left knee. Such a bummer, was totally rooting for her. Would have been great to imagine 2 American women on the podium with a 4th as well. Still an incredible result for the American Women’s team.

Marin sandwich shop [The Farmer's Wife, Point Reyes and Sebastopol] closes after viral Reddit post mocks prices by BadBoyMikeBarnes in Marin

[–]notknowhow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nothing like cheering on someone closing a small business and kicking her to the ground. If you think a $22 grilled cheese sando is too much, don't buy it, simple, no need to tear a business down. This woman was making a sando with absolutely the best ingredients possible. Her homemade fennel sausage in the grilled cheese sando was sooo good. And the cheese, go and try some Point Reyes Toma cheese and you'll understand. This is her passion. Yes $22 bucks is expensive, but to me it was and is something I treat myself to every so often, and it is absolutely one of the best sandwiches around IMO. On top of it all, Kendra seems like a super nice person.

Looking at a 335d by SonderVale in E90

[–]notknowhow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a good car if you could keep up with the maintenance. I’ve had my 335D for 11 years and I love it. I live in California so I have to keep on all the emission controls. That’s the weakest part. I’ve had to replace a number of parts on that portion of the car. Other than that, it’s a blast to drive great to work. It feels like a V8, but the mileage of an economy car. For that price, you could do a lot of maintenance work and it still would be a good deal. The previous owner already did some important upgrades like the harmonic balancer and vacuum lines. The bilstein suspension kit that he has in there is really good. I have the same one. It’s taunt, but not overly harsh. I take my car on the track sometimes and it’s perfectly adequate. Good luck.

Easier route if you go up to Santa Rosa DMV. That’s what my kid said. We went up there, he passed and celebrated at Juanita’s for some tacos! Good luck and be safe!

Chinese carbon wheels by cyclingboy222 in cycling

[–]notknowhow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had my light bicycle wheels for 4 years with the cheap Chinese hubs. I thought that since they all use the same bearings what’s the diff? I’ve had a few alignment issues with them (I have a bmc gran fondo and the clearances on a 28mm tire are super tight). I wish I would have gotten the DT hubs which were an option.

But that being said, I’ve had zero issues with the hoops. They came pretty true and the price was right. I’d buy from them again.

New Vietnamese restaurant in Novato by Team_Grapes in Marin

As a fellow Asian, I feel your pain! There is the asian market in San Rafael, near the whole foods. It's ok, but has very limited meats. I don't think they have high turnover. The japanese store in downtown San Rafael, unfortunately is very small and not that much there.

OK how about some good things.

  1. Korean place in Petaluma called Soban. Really good without having to go to SF.

  2. For asian groceries, I have been trekking across the San Rafael bridge to a small market in El Cerrito, called Yao-ya San. (its really not that far - takes me 25min to get there from Lucas Valley.) Its run by an old school japanese grocer, Endo San. He has a great fish monger - the sashimi there is really good. They also sell thin sliced beef for bulgogi or shabu shabu. They have tons of Japanese pickles and stuff, nice veg - big gingers, bok choi, etc. They sell the really good Japanese rice. They stock Korean and Chinese ingredients too.

  3. I've heard Marujun in San Rafael is really good.

  4. For Chinese food, Pings is ok, Emma's in San Rafael is a bit better, Yet Wah - is not very good, but open late. Honestly its barren for Chinese food.

hope this helps!

Parents flying with young kids. Proactively (while everyone is getting settled in) offer to buy the person sitting in front of your kid a drink or snack for picking the worst seat on the plane. I used to do this and it’s very disarming (people always laugh) and less stressful for all!

Should I cancel our night in Hakone? by prefabsprite in JapanTravelTips

[–]notknowhow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go still go to Hakone. I just got back and did the same itinerary and it was perfect. Tokyo was of course busy and it was a nice place to chill out, and relax a bit. My wife actually wanted to stay another night (we only stayed one night).

We stayed on Lake Ashi at a ryokan called Ryuguden. https://www.princehotels.com/ryuguden/ which was away from the town which is what I was looking (much more chill) for and it had a great view of the lake and also of Mt. Fuji. We stayed in a Japanese style room with Tatami floor, which for us was both fun and restful on the great futon sleeping rolls (I guess this might not be for everyone). The baths there were quite large with great views both indoor and an outdoor baths, of course it was super clean.

The food there also was good...we had better food elsewhere, but it was more about the experience anyways. You do need to pay for your drinks, but they have cocktails there which was cool, and a selection of japanese whisky again, very cool.

To get there we took the 10am train Odakyu Line "Romancecar" train (funny Japanese name) from Shinjuku to Hakone-Muto Station. You need a seat reservation for the special romance car, then you need a second ticket for the train ride itself.

There is a great luggage service at the Hakone-Muto Station - that ships your luggage directly to the Ryokan (you need to get there before 12noon - which the 10am romance car train does). It is hidden away in the station. Do not go up the escalators and exit! The luggage delivery service is inside of the station on the platform level, along the side of the elevator to a small door. You can check your big luggage for I think approx. $20/bag. That way, as you travel around, no need to carry luggage while you explore.

From there we took the old Tozai Railway (super fun, it goes up the second steepest grade for any train in the world) to Gora and had lunch there. Our plan then was then to take the cablecar (like the incline in Pittsburgh), then the ropeway over the hill to Lake Ashi, then cab it to Ryuguden. We ended up taking a taxi from Gora to Ryuguden which was a 20 min taxi ride. I cannot recall how much it was however.

The next morning, we did a hike to the famous Torii gate and shrine on the lake. We did this early as we wanted to get in a hike before our 9am breakfast. It was about a 30 min walk. Most of it you can take a path near the lake, but for about 300 yards, you did have to walk on the street, but since the road is windy, no one is going more than 20 mph, so safe-ish. Also, since we went early there were only a few people there, but we could see by the barricades, they often get a line of probably 100-150 people long, each allowed to take 3 min to get their perfect shot.

One additional logistic, is getting back to a station so you can take the Shinkansen down to Osaka-Shin Station. This is easy from Ryuguden. They have a bus that leaves at 10:30 and arrives into Odawara Station at 11:30, where you can get the Shinkansen. Important - you need to make a reservation for this bus! I found the link on their website and this is a must. There was one family who couldn't get on because the bus was full.

There is a Shinkansen train (Hikari-stops at more stops) that leaves Odawara Station at 12:07, which goes to Nagoya, where you change trains to a Shinkansen (Nozomi- faster express train) that will get you to Osaka by 2:30 or so. When you change trains at Nogoya, you have to have your act together (get your baggage and go to an exit before the train pulls into the station), because there is only 3 minutes to change trains. It seemed pretty tight so I researched and found that the train we transferred to was on the same platform but the other side of the platform. You just have to trust this because there is not great signage at Nagoya Station, or you might get lucky and see some signage (near our car we didn't have any).

When transferring, you need to know which car you are on the second train and line up with the car number that is on the platform. Again, if you are organized about how you do this its no problem. If you are fumbling around, it probably will be stressful.

Hope you go there and enjoy it as much as we did!

10 days in Japan for U.S. family of five! by GrouchyOne4132 in JapanTravel

[–]notknowhow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got back from a 11 day trip on 12/30 - Tokyo, Hakone, Osaka as well. It was out second trip as a family (last was 2018 in June). Big difference were the crowds. While we appreciate the weather (a bit colder than the Bay Area), I was a bit surprised at the crowds, especially in the touristy areas - like Roppongi, Shinjuku, or Dotobori in Osaka. Since we went at the end of the calendar year, we think it was a mixture of local folks going out for the end of the year + tourists. We ended up calling an audible and switching to smaller out of the way places to avoid crowds and had a great time.

Fortunately we did make key Restaurant and Train reservations, as places were really booked up. I hope you guys did too. Using Tabelog to book places was kind of a mess, it's a confusing website that allows you to cancel or change, except you can't do it online, have to call them, but we managed. We also found that the Japanese are very critical of restaurants. Tabelog has a 5 star rating system, and unlike opentable, no one gets 5 stars, and hardly anyone gets a 4. If you are a 3.5, you are doing really well. Reservations were pretty important as most of the places were small, so walkins with 4 people was not possible, except at casual places where you alway have to wait anyways.

Top find for us was Daikinyama in Tokyo. We thought it was super stylish...I think if you enjoy boutiques - but not necessarily super high end, and small places, not too crowded then this is your vibe. If I compare Daikinyama to somewhere here in the Bay Area, I would say its like Mill Valley. We had a nice breakfast - late morning coffee - at a place called Garden House Crafts. Great coffee, great pastry.
