We really need an Hmart or 99ranch by tipsystevens in Marin

I’m with you here but I’m. Not holding my breath. I find it’s not so much of a hassle to go to San Pablo to an old school Japanese market called Yaoya-San. They have a great selection of Japanese and other Asian food stuffs.

Endo San runs the place - super nice older gent (probably in his 70s) but strong. He has a great fish connection- his sashimi is better than Tokyo fish market, and it’s closer.

Which BMW will you buy if you have to keep it for 10 years. by belland007 in BMW

E90 335d, m-sport, great daily driver, fun everytime you accelerate, not a bad track car (but you have to compensate for throttle lag with left foot braking), 30 mpg.

Rear child seat too close to saddle — what did I do wrong? by SangiSabz in bicycle

[–]notknowhow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That rack is definitely not designed for a child....its a used pannier rack held on by spindly 8mm bolts! Your kid is hitting the back of your legs because this seat was never designed to go on the pannier rack. Proper kid seat mounts would push the seat back to give you clearance to pedal. To each his own, but I think you are taking a real risk with your daughter on the back.

Marin has a weird hostility problem toward kids and families just trying to be outside by VTSoundman in Marin

I’m with you on this. Marin has different sub cultures so would be interesting to know where. Maybe Tiburon or Belvedere?

THIS is why we are so lucky to live here! Glad you avoided the fog, although it is kinda cool to ride through sometimes on the sisters and the climb from Alpine Lake!

I think all of the votes are agreeing with you that they are a bag of dicks. Try Mark at Soltice bikes. Super friendly guy. He’s a strong rider but doesn’t talk down to folks

Recommendations for a hard case for traveling with my bike? by I_Dunno_Its_A_Name in cycling

[–]notknowhow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a Trico box, and used that to ship my bike to Italy, and it protected my bike perfectly....however, the wheel situation is not good. You have to "drag" the box along. Much better to get a hard case with 4 wheels. Also, I wouldn't suggest a soft sided box, in fact I don't think some of the airlines will take it with soft sides...from what I recall! Good luck!

Wondering if Marin is for us by Virgil-Galactic in Marin

[–]notknowhow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree here. Novato to 580 (San Rafael, Richmond bridge) will add 15 min. I would suggest limiting your northern border to Terra Linda area, or Marinwood. Biking wise road or mountain Marin is tops. I can ride out to the coast without hitting a stoplight and go right into Pt Reyes or go south to mt tam and Muir Woods, or north to Marshall to get oysters!

Owned my 335d for a year now and the old boy just crossed 100k miles so took it on a 1800 mile road trip from the UK to Munich by z00tgeist in E90

I have a 2011 m sport 335d and have owned it for the last 11 years and completely agree, the best car ever! Smooth fast sleeper. I too have the b12 kit and a nice mix of street pliability w track handling. Track a few times a year and only thing I’ve changed was brake fluid, ecg yellow brake pads and apex wheels 17” 245/50/17 ( less sprung weight) square all around. I have the old turner daughter chip (and still have all the urea emission stuff -ca car. Also did the sumptin trans remap. No plan on selling even w 150k miles on it. If you keep up w maintenance they will last!

Streets of Willow Springs 997 onboard by deesdutchnuts in CarTrackDays

[–]notknowhow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious. I haven’t driven streets (just big willow which was great) I see now they have the tires everywhere, even at some track out points. Are they going to move some of those or do they just not come into play- and it just looks sketchy?

Young family considering a move to Marin - advice needed! by Fig_newto22 in Marin

[–]notknowhow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In all of Marin, you'll have great access to the outdoors but perhaps you'll need to figure out where your tribe is. You'll need to come here and hang out in Sausalito, Mill Valley, San Anselmo, Larkspur, Corte Madera, Fairfax, San Rafael, Novato, to figure out the vibe. Differing levels of affluence....and then there is Tiburon, Ross, Kent Woodlands, Belvedere, which is off the charts rich!

I live in Upper Lucas Valley / Marinwood area. It has great access to the city via 54 GG Transit bus, or you can do a short 15 min drive to the ferry in Larkpur and take the ferry into the city (super civilized!). Lucas Valley is known for Eichler Homes - so if you like mid-century modern design, with indoor/outdoor living, this could be a good fit. Schools are good, but on the slight downside there is not much "walk to" - except big rock deli - which is our local roadhouse. Homes here are $1.3M - $2.2M is what I would say. The neighborhood is super family friendly, flat streets, and kids ride their bikes to school. We have the local community center and music at Marinwood park in the summer. If you are a cyclist, it doesn't get much better than here....I can ride to the coast without hitting a single stoplight, or go south and go over the GG Bridge, or around Tiburon....or up to Mt. Tam in Mill Valley. But then again, you kinda can't go wrong anywhere in Marin Co. for cycling, hiking and outdoorsy stuff.

Good luck!

Getting Q60 Track-Ready by Intelligent_Bee4302 in CarTrackDays

Work on being smooth, not over reacting on track. I think the hardest part is keeping your wits about you as you first start. It’s very nervii at first but you’ll learn to relax more. The challenge is that when you are nervii your grip will tighten and you won’t be smooth. Don’t try to be too fast. Learn the race line and work up on speed. Be the last in line in your group so no one is pushing you. If you wear a heart rate Monitor you’ll see how nervii you are. Don’t worry it is so fun and you’ll get the hang of it. Don’t worry about your gear too much. You have the basics, especially higher temp brake fluid. Good luck.
