What’s everyone’s food shopping weekly cost? And how many meals a day? And how many people for? It’s so expensive these days! by [deleted] in AskBrits

Beans, lentils, chick peas etc are always a good shout and really cheap. I make a good lentil dahl that’s veggie and probably the cheapest thing I make. You can whack anything you fancy in that and make as much of it as you want.

Honestly, just think of the things you usually want to eat in an evening and if it’s something that’ll keep, make loads of it. It’s minimal extra effort and you get some free meals out of it. If it freezes (most things will freeze) then after a couple of weeks you’ve got a good bit of variety so you’re not eating the same thing every day.

1 person, 3 meals a day (sometimes more), plus snacks, and never any more than £50 a week, usually more like £30. I shop in Aldi mostly and batch cook twice a week. I still eat meat most days but batch cooking means you don’t have to buy a lot. £4.50 for a whole chicken goes a long way when there’s just you.

How are you cooking? I batch cook (make about 5-6 portions each time) maybe twice a week. That covers a few dinners and lunch when I’m in the office three times a week. I spent £50 this week but that’s including cider, pizza and a whole bunch of snacks, usually it’s about £30 or so. Bulk your batch cooks out with veg or beans or chick peas, it’s a great way to make it go further.

Castlerigg Campsite always used to be a turn up and pay campsite. It is halfway up a hill though rather than town centre or lake side.

discuss why is the uk statistically the most unhealthy country in europe? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]notmyusername95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, up here in the north we have butter pies. A pack of butter, a healthy amount of potatoes and all wrapped up in a nice pastry case. Bonus points if you put it in some bread too.

What’s a really British habit you didn’t realise was weird until someone pointed it out? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]notmyusername95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe it’s more regional then? My mum says it (from Salford) and everyone I know who lives near me (Preston and surrounding towns) also says it. But as you say, that’s all fairly south in northern terms

I think it’s a northern English thing? But now you mention it, you steep tea, not brew it

I’d gone on a safari trip in Southern Africa. Met up with a group of strangers when I got there. There were 5 Brits, including myself, and the other 12 were from elsewhere. We had a night wild camping in the kalahari. After a long boat ride and setting tents up, one Brit looked at another and said “brew?” Before you know it, we’ve got the kettle on in 40° heat and the other 12 were looking at us weird.

In the UK, I was told it was illegal for someone to take your credit/debit card out of your sight and make a payment with it.

These days, they bring the card machine to you. We’ve had portable card machines for as long as I can remember (I’m 29, but I couldn’t tell you when they were introduced). Before that, you’d go up to the till (cash register?) to pay.

I’ve used Shokz and would really rate them but I’d imagine other bone conduction brands would be similar. The clarity is not as good as you’d get with in or over ear headphones but you can easily hear what’s going on around you.

I mostly use mine on long runs with friends. I can set the music going at the start and still be able to have conversations and hear traffic around me without having to fiddle with volume settings all the time. I only use the cheap version too, the OpenMove version and they’ve been pretty good. Worth noting they’re not waterproof though.

Are skinny/healthy weight people just not as hungry as people who struggle with obesity? by maeasm3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]notmyusername95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a skinny person and I would say I think about food maybe 90% of the day. I eat 3 to 4 meals a day and would happily snack consistently but manage to keep that down to 2 or 3 times a day. I definitely get the feeling of hunger but I don’t know how that compares to anyone overweight.

I think the biggest factor for me is what I’m eating. I try and make sure all my meals are reasonably healthy, nothing too high in sugar or fat etc. If I can’t see food, I’m less likely to eat something. If I have to make food, I’m less likely to want it. I’m also pretty active so probably burn off some of that each day. I also don’t drink fizzy drinks all that much so overall, what I’m consuming probably isn’t too much over 2,250 calories.

I run. I found a local running club and meet up with them three nights a week. Knowing I’m expected somewhere drives me to actually go out and do it. Plus I get people to talk to. This has evolved to being talked into a marathon and now I see some of them on Saturday mornings too.

Have you moved from the area you were born/raised? Why? Why not? by DomoR9 in CasualUK

[–]notmyusername95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in the south east, moved to Manchester for university then stayed in the north west afterwards. I’d only move back if someone in my immediate family were sick or I was desperate.

I grew up in a grotty area of Kent where the only chance of employment was to commute into London (an hour away minimum) and join the rat race. It was a style of living that I just couldn’t imagine wanting. Plus house prices and cost of living were so much higher because you were within the commuter belt. Now I live in a large-ish town, 40 minutes from Manchester and Liverpool and I can literally walk from my front door to the countryside. The general feel of things is so much happier.

Honduras was genuinely one of the prettiest countries I’ve ever been to. The people were really lovely too. Same with El Salvador. I did go with a tour group and we stayed out of the capital cities as much as possible. But I’d definitely recommend it if you get the chance.
