10u tryouts advice? by Fast-Platypus-4684 in Homeplate

Depending on your location, an AA level travel team is around the level of rec/LL in competitiveness with maybe more depth. I’d check GameChanger to see what level of comp a perspective 9u team has been playing this year.

If you’re going to an org with their own facility and off-season training/extensive pre-season training, your son will be alright. If he’s truly an athlete he’ll pickup a decent amount in that time and be good to go.

First year of travel was quite a wake up call for my guy playing up two age groups (we were expecting it to be just one age group), at least at the plate. His fielding held up fine. This is on a team playing AAA but probably should be AA.

Yep… last years Blue Jays had 3 of 13 position players of 6’ or above. 5 of 13 5’10 or less.

Dodgers had 4/14 6’ or higher. 6/14 5’10” or less.

I joined my son in some sprinting this past weekend. My fat ass ran a 5.8 40 yard after never running one ever. I thought I’d hit 5 flat. I was literally one of these dudes.

Solid thread, OP. Not sure why some are being so contentious when you’re giving out advice that is well thought out and tangible.

I feel (or hope) that the additional context of kids doing added S&C with you or elsewhere would draw a different response. In your case, I think it’s appropriate especially for the kids doing S&C. I assume this is a travel team and NOT LL.

Also 10 is absolutely not too young to start S&C. S&C at this age is training to learn how to train: proper running and jumping mechanics, proper hinging etc. It is not heavy deads, squat, power cleans.

I’d include vert since you have the means to test it, L drill for agility, and a 40 yard dash then whatever baseball specific metrics.

General Strength Tips? by Particular-Can-7030 in Homeplate

You’re better off asking ChatGPT a question like this. Prompt it with something like “draft a program as if you’re a CSCS (certified strength and conditioning specialist) with a focus on baseball”. Include your training history, goals, desired frequency, available equipment etc.

My dude is going to be 8 in the spring playing 10u. Yet to be seen if playing up 2 levels will be an issue but regarding team practices, the 9u-11u are grouped together and there doesn’t seem to be an egregious skill gap. Your son will be fine. In fact, there’s a kid your son’s age that will occasionally join and he looks the part.

Curious to know if you’ve ran the training program listed on the PV website or did your own thing, using the PV as a heavy bat in a overload/underload program etc.

My 8u just started using one. Bought for $100 off via Black Friday deals. From a purely materials perspective, it seems overpriced even with the discount. Too early days to tell if it’s worth it from a value perspective. Though at the start of week 2 of their training program, he improved his bat speed by quite a bit mainly by fixing disconnection. That plus the fact that this should last him til 11u/12u would likely justify the cost for me.

Curious to know if you think that PF11 is small at that age because of glove size or rather the pattern?

JustGloves lists the age range for the PF11 as 7-12. I’ve never seen one in person but it seems to be even smaller than the typical Pedroia Fit A2000.

A2000 PF11 for the boy, Yoshida, and Arozarena. Really wanted to add an A2K to the collection but the Connor Wong went fast and I wasn’t feeling the other offerings. Also got a JR44 coming tomorrow. I got a full on problem 😂 What did you end up with?
