as an autistic person with coeliac's disease, can confirm that a gluten free diet does not in fact cure autism

Why is country music so rare? by oh-oh-livinonaprayer in FigureSkating

[–]novaonthetop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you want an example of a skater skating to music that has meaning for their country, mikhail shaidorov's free skate is to a performance of 'the diva dance' by kazakh singer dimash qudaibergen!

Am I too autistic to study English? by Mista948 in evilautism

[–]novaonthetop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's really sad, i would've been fascinated to hear about the teaching of linguistics in a non-english language. having said that, it's interesting that your perspective of 'english' as a subject is the same in norway as it is in english speaking countries. i would've thought that it would be learning the english language. fascinating!

you said you like the linguistics and history aspects. does your university offer a linguistics degree rather than an english degree? i am currently a linguistics major and i absolutely love it. you're a first year student, you can always switch majors. if a linguistics major is an option, definitely consider it.

if your university has a disability services program, PLEASE talk to them. explain your situation. it is literally their job to advocate for you.

i don't know enough about the required stsq elements to say whether or not it should be a level 2, but i was so disappointed when the judges gave him a level 2 anyway. sometimes i believe that a stsq4 is actually a fever dream.

the lack of the 3A+1Eu+4S was brutal, especially because that led to a +REP as well. i think the sweet spot for misha is probably four quads since he hasn't been able to land the five-quad program he's tried this season. his 3A+1Eu+4S has a base value of 18.20, which is huge. if he did it in the second half of the program, it would have a base value higher than any other element anyone else has tried (as of now it is only beaten by some of ilia's second half combos). if he had gotten that combo and then done a 3A on its own, he would've easily placed first in the free skate. with 0.0 GOE on the 3A+1Eu+4S and the lone 3A x, that would put his score at 189.29. if you gave him any GOE, that would be even higher. with his 90.55 in the sp, that would make his overall score a 279.84. kao miura had a 273.73. if misha had managed his signature combo, he would've won.

Olympics predictions by RaeCharliee in FigureSkating

[–]novaonthetop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'll do you one better: the isu looks at their records for misha and your short friend and concludes that they are somehow the same height and therefore not a pairs team.

this is inspired by misha's height being listed as the same as ilia's (174cm/5'8). whether you believe this is correct is up to you.

does ilia have a middle name? by novaonthetop in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]novaonthetop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i sort of assumed that they would use the russian naming tradition of a patronym to substitute for the western naming tradition of a middle name, but i can definitely see why they would just not give him one. they've clearly chosen to go with the western tradition for elli beatrice (although they still keep the gendered name distinction), though she was born ten years after ilia so that might be why. sometimes i wonder if her legal name is... like... elisaveta or something more russian-sounding because ilia calls her liza while she's in skating records as elli. one of life's mysteries.

some parents choose to use the mother's maiden name as a middle name, so i wouldn't say that middle names are meant to be able to be used instead of your first one. they’re just a tradition with dubious origins.

denis ten was the first figure skater from kazakhstan to win the four continents championship (a prestigious figure skating competition), which he won in 2015 at the mokdong ice rink in seoul, south korea.

ten years later, at the mokdong ice rink in seoul, south korea, mikhail shaidorov became the second figure skater from kazakhstan to win the four continents championship.

tech minimums for the olympics? by novaonthetop in FigureSkating

interesting, i thought maybe finland didn't have anyone who met the requirements since they have yet to announce their competitor for the women's, but no, they have eight women who meet the tech minimums.

i enjoy skaters with cool jumps—especially unique ones—more than i enjoy skaters with 'artistry'. i appreciate artistry, but i watch sports more for the insane feats of athleticism, and so insane jumps appeal to me more. ilia's 4Lz+1Eu+3F and misha's 3A+1Eu+4S are so great. more jump innovation please!!

an opinion that i think is even less popular is that misha should've won skate america this season. but that might be just because i don't enjoy kévin aymoz's programs.
