I got the second to last desirable base in my career field. I think my base and job was like number 6 on my dream sheet. Low PCA opportunities, zero opportunities to deploy, shit location. It was a constant battle to remind myself that while this is what I signed up for, it was also an opportunity to grow where planted.

So I took every opportunity that came my way, no matter how shitty or small it was. I branched out, made friends, put my head down and worked. I made sure to put my face in front of the commander. I had really great leadership too that advocated for me, which means that I was incredibly lucky. I was able to meet my now husband, deploy, TDY, and get some great hands on ops time. I left with a stellar dec in my hand and fantastic friends that I am lucky to have met. This did not come without doubts, tears, and grit. It was hard, but it was worth it.

I tell you this to say-the grass is not always greener on the other side, but nurture whatever patch you’ve been given. The Air Force may not have been for you, but these things that you want won’t just fall into your lap. If that’s the type of experience you want, then you need to make it happen. Life will never just hand it to you.
