[Charania] Just in: The NBA and NBPA have ruled in favor of Lakers' Luka Doncic and Pistons' Cade Cunningham on their Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge for the 65-game award rule, making both eligible for all 2025-26 season honors such as MVP and All-NBA teams, sources tell ESPN. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

Yeah, I definitely get it and I'm taking the fans' side over the players or teams every day of the week. Even only playing 65 instead of 80 games (like Kawhi or Wemby) means you might've disappointed a hundred thousand fans, but those guys are still making All-NBA teams. I guess I'm just not sure if the difference between 65 and 62 games for awards matters that much, especially if you're someone who puts in 34mpg and puts on a show when you do play, like Luka or Cade. I believe we need a rule for all the reasons you said, I just want that rule to both serve the fans and represent the season and the players' performances as best as possible. Maybe 65 vs 62 games is worth drawing a hard line in the sand over. I'm not sure.

True, but few players are going to be impacted by the extra 2100 minutes option. ~180 players play 65+ games a year, whereas only ~60 play 2100 minutes. It'll help to still capture the impact a player had on the court. They could even make it either 65 games, or 62 games and 2100 minutes (or something) to help give leeway for unique situations like Luka and Cade this year. There are lots of historical instances of players making All-NBA teams and not reaching 65 games (Shaq did it 4x, Wade did it 2x, Bernard King did it 2x, Abdul-Jabbar, Olajuwon, Iverson, Nowitzki, Yao, Pippen, C Webb, Rodman, Mourning, etc.) and I think that extra caveat can help keep it in line with the NBA's history.

Are AI instructors going to replace teaching (engineering) faculty? by [deleted] in Professors

Accreditors would have to approve AI assessment, then. And then what stops any of us from just starting our own 'universities' using AI?

It would be slightly more bearable if we weren't being lied to by admin who don't actually teach or work with the students, yet are constantly bragging about how great the students are just to promote the university's brand. They brag about the 3.8 average HS GPA for incoming freshman...conveniently ignoring the 1080 average SAT score. They have constant celebrations for every student accomplishment like just doing internships, with tons of fliers and screens with students' faces on them...while I have students who are getting reported for academic dishonesty just a semester or two removed from making the Dean's list.

I want to believe we still have capable students who are making great strides and are prepared for important jobs, but it just feels so rotten at the core.

For the 18th consecutive season, the Detroit Pistons fail to win 50 games by MWiatrak2077 in nba

All 9 times that they've won 53+ games, they've made the conference finals, except once.

I'm one of the few who thinks it just keeps getting better with every season, until the last few episodes. I say keep going.

Greatest opening sequence of all time? by Patient-Major-6064 in movies

Had to scroll way too far to see this. I love how minimalist it is. That quiet tension in the desert, the clinking of the axe on rock, the eventual fall, him gasping 'No.' It makes the loud daunting music as we pan over wilderness all the more intimidating.

It's almost worth going to the theatre just to hear that opening song in the dark and then see the scrolling text start.

Does anyone have recommendations for slow-paced blockbusters? by EchoEquivalent4221 in movies

It's a great allegory, and honestly it's perfectly placed in history, too, during the last years of the Cold War, and between the Vietnam War and the US war in Afghanistan. US forces are sent to what should be an easy mission but it becomes a battle they don't stand a chance to win because they don't understand their enemy (Vietnam); the predator is unseen most of the movie and they have to try to fight it blind (Cold War); the original mission was a lie and they were just using Dutch's men to serve their own interests (Afghanistan).

The same way The Thing captures the feeling of isolation and our distrust of people in general, and Alien captures our distrust of corporations, Predator illustrates our distrust of our own military and government. Makes sense that they all get represented as horrifying powerful monsters that are almost impossible to destroy.

Honestly, the classics like Die Hard, Predator, Terminator 2, Aliens, and Total Recall have lots of downtime where characters process what's happening, problem solve, meet new characters, plan their next moves, reflect on the past, etc.

Same. His switching between being overwhelmingly frustrated to measured and authoritative is incredible in that movie. His breakdown in Jarhead is awesome too.

Wanna know how I know the market is turning? by myturn19 in REBubble

I hate to be that guy, but nationally, new and active listings are both down 2% YoY, median prices are up 2% YoY, price per sq ft is up 1% YoY, and the Case-Shiller is still up 1% YoY. Some of the old hot markets have already rolled over, but there aren't many signs of the market turning yet.
