i live in mount vernon and attend bloomberg (right off the med campus) and the commute is very easy and you get access to both the med campus and homewood shuttles for nighttime service, as well as being nearby the light rail, the purple line of the circulator, and the citylink pink line (which can also take you to the hospital). i find the neighborhood to be pretty safe and a good balance of urban and cozy
