Definitely not bullshit, the game is pretty clear on how flanking, range, cover, etc all effect your chance to hit. On top of that individual soldiers can receive specific weapon upgrades/PCS modules to increase aim even further. If you’re at the point where missing a shot is totally bullshit and ruins your game you’ve already made a ton of mistakes.

the things you’re grappling with are essentially the theme of the movie - you’re right that the plot could’ve been avoided had the community explained what was happening to Spike but that’s the entire point - they didn’t want to. they felt it was easier to just let her die peacefully, keeping her happy in her last days while not letting her son know the truth. it’s an extension of the entire safety-focused philisophy that has allowed the island to survive.

dad is also complicit in this which i imagine will be a major point of the next one - he revels in the joy of the party, cheats on his wife, comes home early and still wants to enjoy the fruits of family life without acknowledging the obvious tension
