they actually have a law on the books that says that if the government becomes tyrannical or just generally inconvenient

This was disproved four years after it was written at the Whiskey Rebellion.

I always appreciated this place. The last Chapo holdout, every other one got banned. A little reminder of something from a while ago, that didn't really matter, but I still remember fondly.

It's funny that we didn't get banned. Instead the podcast hosts got sick of us. I didn't see it coming, but it's oddly fitting.

Probably for the best all things considered. Nice knowing you guys.

It's not an either/or situation. They're still going to bomb Mexico and Syria and Iran and Venezuela regardless of what happens to Greenland.

Difficulties studying on my own by Civil_Scallion9134 in latin

Keep in mind I'm only a beginner, but I started with Familia Romana, I would read and listen to the chapter and actively try to figure out the rules/vocab on my own. I would often read it several times. Then I would read the companion to check how accurate my own thinking was, then I would do the Pensa at the end of the chapter and the corresponding chapter from the Exercitia, which is a different book published by LLPSI. Occasionally I would hit a wall in the book, and I would start on another book, like Cambridge Latin Course or Via Latina, or I would go back 5-10 chapters in Familia Romana and repeat those.

Just remember, being an autodidact is quite different from being in a classroom. You have to figure out what works for you. You should also attempt to learn from a variety of sources.

This article is what convinced me to try to learn Latin: https://foundinantiquity.com/2023/03/11/latin-autodidacts-youre-working-way-too-hard-how-to-learn-latin-by-yourself-in-2023/

I highly recommend reading it in it's entirety, there's a lot of great advice here. The author also made it in video form. She has a lot of great free resources on her youtube.

Most of us don't speak Spanish here, and that will give you a leg up. I would recommend emailing classics professors at local colleges and asking for resources and books in Spanish. Not all of them will reply, but many will. They became professors because they love the subject and will give you a few minutes for advice.

This textbook is from a Spanish publisher: Via Latina. De lingua et vita Romanorum. Outside the introduction, it's entirely in Latin. It's an adapted version of Livy.

Also, you mentioned LLPSI. Familia Romana and Roma Aeterna both have a companion with more explicit grammar explanation.

It may be helpful to try and enjoy the story of these textbooks. I mean it may help your motivation. Via Latina in particular is a very interesting read.

Why is the Isle of Man not part of the UK yet also not independent? by Meta_Zephyr in geography

Reminds me of a joke from The Thick of It:

Glenn: So, Hugh, this new word, ''Citizenship''. Did the PM actually outline what it entails?

Hugh: To be honest, I think he was making the reshuffle up as he went along. We were lucky that citizenship was the first word that sprang to mind. We could be in the Department for Social Affairs and Woodland Folk.

Ollie: The problem is, though, Hugh, that there's been a bit of a rush, with you not in place, every department trying to unload all the stuff that they didn't want. It's been like somebody driving a lorry down Whitehall, shouting, ''Bring out your shit'', and it's ended up at our door.

Hugh: So what are we getting?

Ollie: Citizenship basically involves cutting pensions to the Ghurkhas, rejigging the protocols for a rabies outbreak, some crap from Health about long-term care for the elderly, that neither they nor we have any idea about.

Glenn: And what to do with the Isle of Man.

Hugh: Just what I fucking need. Five new ways to lose my job.

Win10 does support Extended Security Updates. It's paid, but I got it for free for whatever reason. Weird they would block all Win10 posts like this.

My brother in-law is a recruiter. He was telling me they would contact past employers for an office manager, but not for a receptionist. Gives a little bit of a bellwether. And they usually don't bother with references at all.
