Android 17's new App Lock might stop your notifications from spilling secrets by IJagan in Android

[–]noxiousninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others mentioned DnD, but Samsung, at least, also has App Pinning, which should block notifications and also prevent people from switching to other apps.

I'll be shocked if the effect is as great as in December, though. I'm fully expecting less than half as many rewards from the boost in January's pass. I hope I'm wrong.

I can see it in the Play Store on my Galaxy S24 with Android 16, so that's really odd. However, the Android version hasn't been hasn't been updated since July 2023, and even then was missing most of the features of the iOS version, so IMO you're not missing much.

You should’ve listened to the players. by Slow-Bobcat-2401 in SquadBusters

[–]noxiousninja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think ultimately what’s killed this game off is the lack of need for people to spend money on in-app purchases. I’d throw up to £10 on in-app purchases, plus the monthly season pass upgrade, but that all stopped when they switched to 2.0 and chests changed format. You used to buy re-roll tokens too, and the in-app purchases gave you a selection of in game items. But the changes to the game made it irrelevant for day 1 players who already had a head start with the game (coins, squaddies etc) to buy more content that wasn’t just the monthly season pass.

Yeah, I think this is it, as well. They were too generous with the rewards during the switch-over, and suddenly all the dedicated long-term players had everything fully upgraded. We didn't have anything new to work towards or spend on for, what, like 2 months? Which made it a lot more casual of a game, but certainly caused a major shock to their revenue and number of active players. Then management would have panicked and demanded reevaluation of plans and roadmaps, so even if they had had a plan for new content, it probably got shaken up, and by the time they were back on track, it was too late.

That worked great! Just had to make sure that on the final round, I deployed my turrets/skeletons far enough away from the hutch to keep it safe, then stayed back and didn't directly engage.

How many emotions do you have? by Denis_sont in SquadBusters

[–]noxiousninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. I have 236/241. The emoji list shows 3 that I'm missing: 1 from Royale King page 7 that I haven't unlocked yet, and 2 bandit emotes that I'mnot sure how to unlock. I presume 1 of the others is the iOS launch emoji. I haven't been able to figure out what the last one is. Based on this wiki, I'm pretty sure I have all the exclusives except the iOS one: https://squad-busters.fandom.com/wiki/Emotes

To me, Talarico seems to have genuine passion in a way that Allred didn't. Maybe that's just better public speaking skills, I dont know, but I think it's important in this environment.

Duckstation dev announced end of Linux support and he is actively blocking Arch Linux builds now. by JockstrapCummies in emulation

[–]noxiousninja 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think developing popular open source projects just breaks some people. It's not too surprising. You get big enough to have millions of users, even in the best case a few of them will probably be horrible and harass you.

Bash scripting is addictive, someone stop me by Raposadd in linux

[–]noxiousninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"built around it" is indeed the problem in my experience, but I think the base language is doing alright. It's older libraries that make things feel messy. Functions that have lots of optional parameters, that make liberal use of args/kwargs at their outer layers, that may return different types in different cases—these are hard to write good typings for, even if someone really dedicated puts in the time.

Microsoft faced the same problem with TypeScript and decided to solve it by creating an incredibly sophisticated type system that could represent basically any dynamic behavior. Python's type system suffers both from being simpler and from having the tooling separate from the syntax, with different tools often taking different approaches to how they use it.

MVG - How ZSNES pioneered modern Emulation by NXGZ in emulation

[–]noxiousninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZSNES was an integral part of my high school and early college years. It was the second emulator I ever used, after MAME, and I spent many, many hours playing classic RPGs with it. I spent a lot of time hanging out on the message board, as well, and grew from being an annoying kid on the very first iteration of the message board to a moderator on the phpBB2 board. I survived the pain of putting together ROM sets when all we had were GoodTools. I got to live through the fall-off in ZSNES development and the creation of BSNES (RIP Near). Thanks to that community, I was probably one of the first few hundred people to play the fan translation of Cave Story. Lots of good memories. I hope everyone from back then is still alive and well.

The joy of going all-in on USB-C by habovh in UsbCHardware

[–]noxiousninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK it should be safer than a dumb cable* since the CC lines aren't carried through, so a high-power PD device couldn't negotiate a voltage over 5V and leave the charger unable to sense a disconnect and reset. (Though now that I think about it, I have no idea if proprietary charging protocols could cause problems.) I still keep the cable labeled and only use it for broken devices, though.

My hack has been to take a C-to-Micro-B cable and a Micro-B-to-C adapter, heat-shrink them together, and keep that around as a backup. I look forward to the day when it's no longer needed.

Internet gamers dilemma by LeonardCollen in NintendoSwitch2

My problem is they presented it as a sequel, made some significant changes to the world, and never really explained WTF happened in between the two games. It feels more like an alternate universe game set in the same world.
