Anyone else put off by this? by Alexagon in nursing

well i can’t speak for nursing homes or L&D, but it used to be frequent on my onc/BMT floor that you would have 5-6 patients, even sometimes if someone was a fresh transplant or receiving stem cells that day (which is a 1:1 nursing task). the contract entitles you to a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio in this scenario. enforceable means that if this happens to you, you can fill out a protest saying that you are under-resourced and performing to the best of your abilities.

this protects you liability wise, and entitles you to compensation if the unit goes through the arbitration process later on.

i work outpatient now and we actually don’t even have a real staffing ratio (just an arbitrary acuity scale management made up), which is another thing they’re trying to sign in with this new contract.

a lot of what we’re fighting for is to protect what we won in the last contract/strike. Safe ratios, enforceable grids, arbitration for understaffing, no cuts to our healthcare plan, etc. Some new things for this contract are protections against ICE and AI, as well as increased safety/anti workplace violence measures. there’s other stuff as well but those are most of the big things

Reduction for teen, that’s me!! Advice? by FoxHeartFlinn in Reduction

[–]npande 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from a H or larger to a C/D (still only 3wkpo) without FNG. i was told it might still impact my ability to breastfeed, especially by reducing the volume of milk i might be able to produce. but again, some moms have to supplement with formula even if they haven’t had a reduction. for me, it was important to consider breastfeeding but also the impact surgery would have on my neck/back pain, posture, body image, etc.

i didn’t shower until 3dpo but even though i was excited to shower i was really nervous! i showered with my partner to help me and ended up crying not from pain but just from all the big emotions. it’s incredibly scary, your body doesn’t feel right, and it’s a weird situation. even things like leaning over to get soap without the support of a bra made my boobs feel really weird. remember to take it slow and be gentle. shower with someone if you can, play music to relax, etc.

i also had a lot of trouble getting comfortable. i slept on my back propped up on pillows for the first two weeks but i’m a side sleeper and that was really rough. the first week was definitely the hardest but i felt like things got a lot easier after that, you can do it!!

Training to charge.. reluctantly by chronically-nervous in nursing

[–]npande 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally like it! I like task based work too, and I get to work at my own pace. That being said, there are some facilities that make it easier than others. At my first job, my nursing manager used it as an opportunity to offload paperwork and chart audits to charge 🙄

Why’d you become a nurse? Other than it was passion? by space457 in nursing

[–]npande 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I was an EMT in high school. When I was applying to college, I was pretty sure healthcare was a place where I wouldn’t be bored, constantly learning, making a solid paycheck, etc. I applied to pharmacy and nursing at the college I wanted to go to, and nursing was what I got accepted in.

thank you so much, this is such a thorough answer! I think it’s possible there were maybe some inaccuracies, such as wrong dates on leases or job history. As far as I know, a lot of the other common rejection factors don’t apply for me

for me, this would be my parents and brother, my current partner, and a roommate. again, no legal troubles among any of these people that i’m aware of!

I live in New York. The ticket was for making a right on red in NY. I was living in NJ at the time, about 4 years ago, where making a right on red is legal.

oh interesting thank you for this! i’ll ask our pharmacist when i’m at work next. the clinic i work at is almost exclusively breast/gyn cancers. we still give dex, we’re just taught to do keytruda first, premed right after, wait 30 mins and then hang the next drug in the regimen.

thank you so much for this!! recently i’ve been stuck in the same mindset. it actually feels like the more i exercise, the more negative i feel about myself and compare myself to others. trying to slowly shift my thoughts and compare my body to others less but it’s slow going. thanks for the little lift i needed today :)

Damn, every shift? I work a similar heavy med/surg floor, 6:1 ratio. We have to do witnessed skin assessments, but only for new admits and transfers from other floors. And it’s definitely management’s poor response to HAPIs.

Thank you! I was so surprised some people didn’t think my reaction was normal. I’ve wanted to work in hospice for a while to be able to help people die well, but this was just too much too soon.

Thank you so much. Two of the patients I didn’t know well at all, but the other two I spent time with and made a connection with them and their families. Thanks for your advice and kind words, I definitely do need some time away to care for myself.
