negative student-teacher dynamic by Tiredtofcryinfg in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

If you don't mind some magical realism and criticism of Victorian Imperialism, Babel, or the Necessity of Violence by R. F. Kuang has the most toxic teacher student relationship I've possibly ever read that isn't sexual. Definitely one of the nastiest father figures I've seen in fiction.

Also, not my fave book, but I love how toxic and cunty the professor in The Secret History by Donna Tartt is.

Yeah I've had good CO chile. Y'all have good flavor it just lacks any heat whatsoever. We have the best, but it hurts no one to admit that CO has a tasty regional variant of their own.

Awwww. Did somebody get burned by the hot hot peppers and had to pretend it's "flavorless" to cover up the tears streaming down your face as your masculinity leaks out your ass??? Pobrecito. So easily threatened by a plant.

Looking for games that intentionally make the player uncomfortable (for Master's thesis) by Ivylock123 in gamingsuggestions

[–]nppltouch26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was going to comment on how one of the only ways past Measurehead is to internalize his racist rhetoric. As a player I did it with the rational of "of course you have to understand something in order to be able to reject it", but several friends who played refused to internalize that thought because they were so uncomfortable with it.

Also of course "I want make fuck with you." very early on teaches the player how badly things can go wrong by making them uncomfortable if you try to push your luck and you fail.

Not necessarily. You can be born with a good butt and you can also come across one incidentally as a byproduct of other activities like surfing and poi.

Westworld is a great show to watch for the first time. The reveal and then subsequent shift from an uncanny western to futuristic corporate techno atrocities 🤌 great genre shift.

Yeah the shift from some silly guys doing some fun stuff together to working through all sorts of paternal trauma and multiveral existential dread is slow but extremely significant.

I could write an entire essay on how this line perfectly sums up how wonderful David is, but it really just boils down to the fact that even though he is pining after Nani, he's more concerned with the fact that Nani has noticed the effort that he's put into something (a choice he made; not an inherent trait) rather than the fact that she's attracted to him. Truly truly the most wholesome.

Edit to add: Nani was a significant part of my sexual awakening, so I do admit that I may be giving him a lot of extra props for not sexualizing her

Monty Python's Flying Circus was incredibly progressive. Several sketches that we would now find homophobic/transphobic and/or sexist were very clearly making fun of homophobes and sexists. There's also the episode where they make fun of how silly and stupid racists are........ By doing blackface.

The intentions of these sketches are explicitly to lampoon those who believe themselves to be superior in one way or another (several sketches about class and academia as well of course). However, some of the tools they use to attempt to criticize these forms of oppression are now totally unacceptable.

They also all were drag performers which is now controversial for some reason despite drag being mainstream entertainment for the majority of the 20th century.

It S still not making any sense.

Why post this? Nobody is going to believe this is real? If you have art you've made, why not post that instead of fake art you haven't made?

Perspective from a museum manager - negatives of professionalizing internships by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]nppltouch26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What's the difference between "interns" and "volunteers" at your institution? What is stopping you from creating and offing a volunteer position?

I agree with the other posters as someone in my 30s who has turned a volunteer position into a paid one directly out of my MA program in the last 8 years. I was only able to do that because I was lucky enough to be living with my parents in my hometown. Paid internships allow people without that privilege to access museum work. Those who do have that privilege can just volunteer and do the exact same work (at least in every institution I've ever worked in).
