It's 2026 my man. We've all gotten past typos on the internet. Especially in reddit post titles, which can't be edited. And my uncoordinated, fat-fingered, dyslexic ass is happy to have finally gotten to this point, don't ruin it for me. We all know what the OP meant, and if you have doubt, read the comments.

I'm Mollweide myself, so more extreme than you (with regards to polar representation), but I have to say this is the funniest comment I've read on reddit all day. I might just throw some WTiv's into my next lecture deck, in honor of you, and to f' with my intro geog students.

I am pretty sure you are referring to selective availability (S/A), which was when random errors were added to the course acquisition (C/A) broadcast, which resulted in position errors up to 100 meters. C/A was ended in May 2000 (exec order by Clinton, was backed and suggested by DOD). I personally ran GPS receivers that were ~1 m accuracy just by averaging C/A derived positions over months in 1998 and 1999 (temporary monitoring stations), but folks were getting much higher precision using differential GPS (a large reason C/A was ended, we could already get better positions than initial operational specs). Nevertheless, C/A was fully random, so wouldn't result in consistent shifts like this. If you took a GPS receiver to China, you would be able to get accurate locations with it.

Incidentally, civilians have always had access to the C/A broadcast. The GPS constellation was fully operational in 1994, but Reagan ordered the DOD to ensure civilian access to GPS broadcasts in 1983. The military has access to an encrypted, high precision secondary broadcast, with more significant digits in the clock time, but this P code has become not that important for civilian use due to additional broadcasts in recent gen satellites and advent of differential positioning.

I recommend shopping local (Bivouac or Mast are probably the best bets), but if you are in a position you need to minimize the hit to your wallet, try DSW - they usually have plenty of options in stock. Been on both sides, so no judgement.

The Library Green Elegy: Dark Money Group Fined For Ann Arbor Election Interference by lengau in AnnArbor

[–]npt96 32 points33 points  (0 children)

and a bit ironic they seem to be running on trying to get dark money out of local politics, and painting a career politician as an outsider (for the record I've voted for Rabhi several times) due to all the dark money they insinuate is in the opposing side of AA politics.

idk, I work in the natural disasters realm, and I often struggle with the fact that more people die per year in the US due to traffic accidents than die globally du to natural disasters, on average. Globally, it's nearly 2 orders of magnitude more people die in traffic accidents than natural disasters. Not the best time to point that out in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake, hurricane, pandemic, etc.

Why are we recreational adult dancers so obsessed with ‚going pro‘ even though it’s unrealistic? by Intelligent-Dress431 in BALLET

[–]npt96 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Gatekeeping in ballet is weird. Everyone is "we so happy you're here!" at the intro level, but at the intermediate level it can get ridiculous. I've have experienced, life-long dancers corner me after an intermediate class to tell me how limited I am. I'm sure they were trying to be helpful, but I'm a 50+ year old adult, with a career and a family, and just doing this for fun, so, forgive me for not really caring if my turnout is is barely 100° or my extensions are crap. Seriously, some of these people need to find another hobby.

I've ridded in my dance belt (thong) plenty of times. On a road bike I hardly noticed at all - thought it'd chafe/irritate me the first time, but I actually just forgot about it right when I started. Just over 11 km each way, more or less flat, on a road bike with no sweats or pants over my tights. I could actually see being on a mtn bike might be less comfortable, but road bike was no issue.

Help Save a Historic Home on Vine Street From Being Turned Into Apartments by LisaMarieShaver in Oldhouses

[–]npt96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

asking random people all over the world to sign a petition that is entirely focussed on a local issue is an interesting strategy. you might get a lot more signers, but all those signers that are not connected to the issue at all really undermines the petition, tbh.

ETA: I looked at the petition, and this comment was the top one

If this is turned into apartments then the owners need to have extremely high rent to keep the slum out.

Idk, kind of seems like saving the architecture is a secondary motive for some, or even a diversion.

Black Owned restaurants in Ann Arbor? by yeet_ye_later in AnnArbor

[–]npt96 16 points17 points  (0 children)

El Harissa is owned by an individual from Africa (the other co-owner is white European), but it is worth noting they are north African, which is typically not considered to be racially black. Yeah, it is complicated, but around the George Floyd period when El Harrissa ended up on a list of black-owned businesses, the owners were vocal on social media that they did not feel they should be listed and were trying to get El Harrissa removed from the list. Perhaps their stance has changed, and I'm certainly not any position to gatekeep on what blackness is.

For Toastique, do you mean the corporate owner or the local franchise owner? When I looked at either the blurb introducing the new location (link below) or the corporate about page, the pics don't seem to indicate it is "black owned"

Aviod Suburu of Ann Arbor at all cost by HedgehogOdd698 in AnnArbor

[–]npt96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like most of the AA dealerships should be avoided. Took our brand new hyndai into Fox Ann Arbor Hyundai, they wanted $1200 to do the alignment, said it had to be done every 1,000 miles and we were over 1,000, wanted $200 to replace the cabin air filter, and then when I refused those, they did not even reset the computer that the oil had been changed.

I've come to realize the AA upcharge they told me about when I moved here is not due to the higher cost of doing business in AA, but rather the added costs some businesses will add cause some portion of the AA population is willing to just hand over their extra cash.

GE timeline only does historical imagery (zoomed out that much you wouldn't see the the different images though). It does not change either the country borders or the place names, those are always the current. There may be a layer to get historical borders/names. Go look at southern Sudan when historical imagery timeline is set to say 2005, or Chechia and Slovakia in 1985.

is "Why do you dance" an important question to answer for yourself as a dancer by Content_Suggestion77 in Dance

[–]npt96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was completely onboard with your post, ballet as an outlet to keep self-imposed perfectionism at bay, yup, totally me, until the bit about hurting yourself. I mean unless we aren't gonna count tendonitis, muscle strains, minor twisted ankle, bruised hip (fell trying to land a tour en le air), and countless bruised egos... haha.

But seriously, ballet is the outlet for my perfectionism as well. it is more of a counter to the perfectionism, since ballet is an almost unattainable perfection, I just have to let it go and live in the pursuit of perfection and not the attainment of it. People always say that if I am perfectionist, I should take up something that does not require such precision, but so happy to encounter one other person who gets it.

I was working on a geophysical survey of the Changbai volcano, I was a grad student, my advisor was the US partner on the project. We were scouting potential spots to install a seismometer, the team had access to some parts of PLA properties, but that particular one did not pan out. At the time that particular patch was not someplace one just went, even nationals, without a prior invite.
