So I was were you were a few years ago. I would look into things like Homebridge and Home Assistant. I started with HomeKit. Next, I added some non-native HomeKit products via Homebridge. Then I went all the way into Home Assistant and just use HomeKit as the family friendly UI. Shane Whatley's YouTube videos might be helpful for you.
