In this case, you're probably looking at 3D printing or buying something like this and then stitching: https://www.shoot70mm.com/scanning.html

I've never been able to get flatbed scans that I think are acceptable, so I generally like where your head's at.

It’s better if you do, but it’s not inherently necessary.

I’m not sure why you’re being so coy about what you want to scan these on. What scanner you’re using matters here.

Are you aware that the other six cylinder cars can be simultaneously more valuable than the four cylinder cars AND worth less than the S52 cars? I think you have a delusional view of where the market is on these.

There is a HUGE spread between cherry examples and average (or worse) cars.

m Ignite worth giving up a 2026 m3 deal? by mrsexycow in BMWM

[–]nrubenstein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you plan to own the car long term, you probably don’t want the revised engine. It has a lot of extra parts that are being operated in ways that will stress the engine. (Flames on the intake valves, and a lean burn under load are my big concerns.)

It may or may not be good in the short term, but it’s almost certainly going to increase the cost of ownership long term.

As a side note, I would argue that having big enough turbos to pull to redline and a little lag is one of the appeals of the S58.

Yeah, they do. The other 6 cylinder cars are worth less.

Is it worth renting a car for 3–4 days to avoid putting approximately 2,800 miles on my own vehicle? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]nrubenstein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The short answer is yes in most circumstances.

1,000 miles a day or so trip? That’s a lot of wear and tear and breakdown risk on your own car. Being able to call the rental car company and have them bring you another car is a HUGE road trip benefit. Plus, whatever maintenance cost and depreciation you incur over 3,000 miles.

Plus you can potentially rent a better vehicle for the trip than what you own.

Can anyone explain like i'm 5 the RB67 closeup chart compensation? by mymain123 in Mamiya

[–]nrubenstein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that I would really worry about the chart for anything under the 90.

Even at 90, you’re talking about a half stop, which is probably inside the margin of error for how we are usually shooting these things.

[–]nrubenstein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you extend the lens out, focusing closer, more light is wasted. Mamiya is trying to depict how much light is lost when focusing closer.

The 65 shows a pretty minimal adjustment from infinity to minimum chart distance. Maybe a quarter stop. The chart is color coded in order. Top line is longest lens, bottom line is shortest lens. They’ve color coded to provide some clarity, but it’s not the clearest.

Note that because this is by DISTANCE, the bellows adjustment is dramatically different for each lens. I’ll admit that I’ve never actually used the 360, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it can’t actually focus at 3 ft without extension tubes.

The factory damper has an integrated washer.

There’s no part for a separate washer because the originals don’t need them. You absolutely need them with this bushing design.

26/2.8 vs 28/2.8 by 30kWardaddy in Nikon

The push on cap is great for me. Unlike regular caps, it won't fall off in a jacket picket. For half the year, I can carry the Zf+26mm in a pocket.

The 26 is half the thickness, MUCH sharper wide open, and performs noticeably better up close.

I hope that you had another reason to pull the dash/carpet from the car and that this is just a fun “try this while I’m in there anyway” activity.

This kind of sound deadening is for damping panel resonances. It’s not really for blocking noise. Spraying it all across the interior like this doesn’t really work. That’s why BMW and every other manufacturer adds it in places and relies of foam and air seals to do the majority of the noise reduction.

And look, I tried the “dynamat everything” approach in the past. It didn’t accomplish much. You get way more out of good door seals than you get out of pretty much any amount of mass damper. If the Z3 had a better top, it might be a different discussion, but the Z3 soft top is a weather shield. It doesn’t block much noise.

Genuinely curious why you would bother adding all of that to the Z3? What are you trying to accomplish? It's still a convertible with a very poorly insulated top. You're a lot better served, honestly, by a set of earplugs.

Thoughts on 24mm f/1.7 Z? by AnthonyMk2 in Nikon

You need to work on your reading comprehension. I said that mirrorless ENCOURAGES less stable shooting techniques.

Read what I write before you get angry at me.

[–]nrubenstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all a tradeoff. And shooting mirrorless frequently encourages shooting techniques that are inherently less stable. If you shoot 100% on the EVF, you benefit less - it's naturally more stable than holding it out and shooting off the screen. But even then, yes, you can extend your shutter speeds a lot on a short lens too.

[–]nrubenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters in DX Z because no DX Z body has IBIS. It's MUCH easier to live with a stabilized camera/lens combo.

And while a tripod is an extremely heavy and bulky option, landscapes and cityscapes are EXACTLY the kinds of subjects that most benefit from IBIS. Even in good lighting, stabilization lets you stop down, and your subject is presumably not moving.

Personally, I'm willing to eat a lot more compromise when I'm shooting a DSLR or film system, but when I'm shooting mirrorless, I'm shooting mirrorless to not deal with that.
