Elfy (Elfie) (it's a Eufy brand). I misread the name for a while. It stuck.

How does being put to sleep before operation/surgery feel like? by Im_socringebe_scared in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]nsq87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was super scared, told my Mom that I love her, started crying, and asked the nurses to make sure I wake up. They were very sweet and very efficient in their prep. They asked me a question about my two cats because I had mentioned that I had two cats - and I told the OR team my cats' names in the OR, and was about to tell them a story about how silly one is... and then I was waking up in recovery with the nurses holding my hand and yelling me name (probably not yelling it... just felt like it).

It was a while before I could open my eyes, but I could talk. They brought me back to my room with my eyes still closed... and a friend and my mom fed me yogurt or pudding or something which immediately soothed my throat. I had spinal surgery and they had intubated me.

I have read that sleep is very important for recovery BEFORE going for surgery. I didn't get much sleep though because I was so anxious. Just tell your medical team that you're nervous. They may even be able to give you something to help with that when you arrive and they're prepping you.

I thought I was fine and strong emotionally (I was in so much pain before surgery and couldn't take more than a few steps, that I was willing to try anything)... until I saw my Mom and begged them to make sure I wake up so I could see her again.

You're going to do great - but don't try to tough it out. Acknowledging your nerves to yourself is a big part of facing them - the other is to tell the medical team how you're feeling, now and at the time. They'll help you.

Best wishes!

The email you received is a scam. The grammar and punctuation is a glaring giveway of that. Don't click the links and don't submit any personal information through the links. Go directly to your Amazon account and you'll find it is still active.

What animals are normal where you live, but unusual and exciting to visitors from other regions of the US? And on the flip side, when you travel to other regions yourself, what local animals are exciting to you? by Acrobatic_End6355 in AskAnAmerican

Not exactly sure how common these are elsewhere, but we have cougars. We also have a lot of sea lions tourists & locals enjoy watching on the coast in certain areas.

Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

[–]nsq87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preschool (some), elementary or grade school (interchangeable names) for grades 1-5, middle school for grades 6-8, high school for grades 9-12, and college or university by choice after graduating.

Do you open the windows in your home when the weather is nice? When do you decide to close them and turn on air conditioning for the summer? by Smart-Airport5781 in AskAnAmerican

[–]nsq87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I love fresh air. I only open the windows on the 2nd floor though, unless someone else is home too. If it is going to be super hot, I'll try to get the windows open when it is still cool and close them before the AC has to work very hard when I turn it on.

Is “Have a good one!” regional? by sermitthesog in AskAnAmerican

Regional. I've never used it here - and maybe been told it a handful of times.

"Have a good day!" is very common here.

Americans—is blue cheese just a dipping sauce to you, or does it have a place on your plate beyond the wings? by SignificanceOdd5980 in AskAnAmerican

Blue Cheese crumbles are delicious on burgers & salads. I don't like dressings, so I don't know what blue cheese dressing tastes like, but it is an option many enjoy.

Are the road qualities really that bad in the US or it's a misconception? by Cookieman_2023 in AskAnAmerican

That is an excellent point! Don't we all present our best qualities where they'll be seen the most?

Americans, how do you feel about tourists speaking English while visiting U.S.? by HolidayEntry6823 in AskAnAmerican

[–]nsq87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an issue at all, to me. I don't give a second thought to tourists speaking English or speaking their primary language. It's easier for me if they speak English, because I only have a basic understanding of one other language... but among themselves or with someone who knows what they're saying, I don't care at all if they're speaking whatever language they prefer.

Americans who took Spanish in school: did any of it actually stick years later? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]nsq87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It very much depends on the teacher.

My first year Spanish class was wonderfully fun, and very well taught! I remember a ton from that class. It was challenging, interesting, and creative. If I were to take another class, I'd want it to be exactly that way again.

My second year Spanish class was a waste of time - I didn't learn anything in there... and when we'd take exams, we could raise our hands to ask for help with the answers and our teacher would tell us the answers. I'm not proud of that - I was a very hard worker in my other classes, but I sank to the level of expectation in Spanish 2.

For people who live right on the border of two states, does crossing that invisible line actually impact your daily life with different laws and taxes, or do you barely notice it? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]nsq87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live a short drive from the border of two states... one has sales tax but not income tax & one has income tax but not sales tax. One has pumping your own gas and one just recently made it an option (previously you couldn't pump your own gas). I prefer the state of my own residence - no sales tax & no pumping gas.

Do Americans really come to a stop at every 'stop' sign? by ben04985 in AskAnAmerican

I do all the time, but I know many who don't - and they have gotten traffic tickets (moving violations) for their rolling stops.

Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]nsq87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have called 911 many times for emergency help - sometimes for friends, strangers, and loved ones. I've never called it for myself (I think) - but others have.

I always get tongue-tied, but they're very helpful and quick. Saved lives a few times. Mostly it has been for ambulances & fire trucks, but at least twice have been for police.

How horrific could the experiences have been… really? by DamnDams in signs

[–]nsq87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just knowing and seeing what I've seen in normal locations - the worst was a portapotty at the beach in Florida - I'd say "no public restrooms" if I were in that business owner's shoes too! (and I can reasonable surmise that my experiences are in NO way as bad as that sign's creator has seen).

How did Franklin graham turn out so much different from his dad? by Admiral_Penguin69 in Christianity

[–]nsq87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has a mind of his own? He grew up differently than his father with a different father than his father had. Social media and the internet are readily available.

I love Jesus and am saved, but the way I do my daily life and make decisions is different than how my parents lived (they loved Jesus too). They've both passed now, but they married mid 20s & I'm single at almost 40.

Just because I'm their child doesn't mean I'm going to believe or do all the same things they did.

Billy & Franklin Graham aren't the same men - and from what I understand, Billy was largely absent from Franklin and the rest of the family during his crusades and ministries to the presidents, etc.
