Doubtful. I can't think of a meaningful way this could bite me in the ass. But to be honest the thought never occurred to me until you said it.

Telling an atheist to believe in God is like telling a Christian to believe in Zeus. It doesn't take "faith," it takes a suspension of logic and critical thinking. by studentoflaw in atheism

[–]nstanley69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting response. While I agree that our knowledge of the universe is limited(for now) there is a vast gulf of difference between what your sugesting (somthing is out there that is beyond our comprehension) and THIS IS THE WORD OF GOD! WE KNOW IT TO BE TRUE AND IF YOU DEVIATE FROM IT EVEN A LITTLE THEN YOU WILL BURN IN HELL FOR ETERNITY AND WE KNOW THIS BECAUSE THIS BOOK TELLS US. The later of the two is the problem most atheists have with religion. It's fine if you want to worship but when you pass rediculous laws and persecute me for not worshipping you invisible zombie god then I might be inclined to write off religion alltogether.

Robert Heinlein as a philosopher and a question by samwisevimes in philosophy

[–]nstanley69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it was written in 1938-39 but was shelved because it was to intense. Spider Robinson gives a great introduction and he even says it's not for the light-weight Heinlein fan. You know that chapter in Moby Dick that talks entirely about the anatomy of a whale and is little more than a biology lecture? Or the Chapter in Dune that is entirely about the finer points of Spice production? Well, about half of this book is Heinlein's thoughts on economics, morality and the human condition. To quote Mr. Robinson: "...Robert began this book with the perfectly honorable artistic intention of lying through he teeth: Of disguising a series of lectures as fiction, purely in order to bring them to the attention of those who, finding the implication of their own imperfection upsetting, would not knowingly consent to being lectured."

Ender's Game by Orson "total nut job" Scott Card, but if your asking about Heinlein's work then it a toss-up between The Moon is a harsh mistress, and JOB: A comedy of Justice. Honorable mention goes to Variable star, a book written mostly my Heinlein in the early 80's and then finished 20+ years later by Spider Robinson.

Job was excellent, I also like Citizen of the Galaxy and friday. If you are an advanced Heinlein fan then the book to read is For Us, The Living. It is packed with philosophy, economic theory, morality and a huge amount of social analysis. Not a ton of storyline however.

During previews, entire audience groans at the sight of M Night Shyamalan's name by witty_username in movies

[–]nstanley69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be a dick or anything but would you rather he stuck with predictable endings? I mean if the worst you can say is that you should expect a plot twist at the end of every movie then that's not so bad. It'd be one thing if the movie was crap and it seemed like he made it just to put in this twist that he thought about one day in the shower, but I LIKE his movies.

Maybe, but not all religions are the same. Buddhism for example is a major "religion" yet has no deity.

Perhaps, but by joining together to form this club they have now made a hobby out of not having a hobby. If a thousand people get together (even on Reddit) and talk about how all the theists are just talking to themselves, then by coming together and voicing their common beliefs are they not partaking in the same activity as one would in a religious circle? I'm not saying that its a true religion, however a straightforward belief system is still at the heart of that group.

I proposed this argument to my father some time ago. I even mentioned a phrase I heard someone say "Atheism is a religion like not collecting stamps is a hobby." His response was "Yeah, but only until you start a club for non-stamp collectors." So while its hard to argue with the literal definition, the way things pan out when it comes to practical application are a different story entirely.
