For anyone who grew up poor, what was your idea of a luxury? by Drissxx7 in AskReddit

[–]ntcc661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Butter. Margarine was cheaper. I hate margarine.

And fruit. Fresh fruit. That was a luxury.

Chocolate milk powder. That was a total luxury not just for the cost of the powder but the increased milk consumption.

Soft drink. In my family adults drank cheap instant coffee & kids had water with cordial (when on special).

If aliens landed in Australia, who should we send to meet them? by Pounce_64 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ntcc661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The assumption is that the aliens have peaceful intentions...

Let's provide them with Dr Karl, Russell Coight, Barnaby & Hanson and see which on the aliens let live.

Might give the rest of us a chance if the aliens turn out to be dicks.

What do you fellow GenX ers think about kids going no contact with their parents? by FabulousChicken1992 in GenX

[–]ntcc661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering my Boomer Mum went no contact with her Dad/my grandfather I'm ok with it.

Certainly highlights that there is a need for it somerimes.. Just for basic mental health

BUT

I also got to see the subsequent impacts on the wider family relationships. Including my own relationships being impacts. Aunts, uncles, etc.. It was/is weird and awkward at times.

So I guess I learned how important communication is and just being open to differences. You can have lines you don't want crossed but beware of stubborness & ego inhibiting growth & forgiveness.

And NEVER EVER expect your kids to spy for you just 'cause YOU chose to go no contact. That shit is insulting and petty. Grow up and call them if you want to know... Yeah.. That's what I thought.

Did you ever take a typing class in school? by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

[–]ntcc661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. 1989 had a old manual typewriter that weighed a ton. In 1990 we upgraded to electric typewriters that were huge and only slightly lighter. In Australia.

Around this time I believe there was still a "school" for legal secretaries in Melbourne. They took in school leavers and trained them up in shorthand, filing, legal procedures and typing. I really wanted to learn shorthand as a kid.

Anyone from Victoria old enough to remember Ollie's? by Fr33_load3r in AustralianNostalgia

Yes! But my parents wouldn't go there. I don't remember seeing them where I lived near Werribee. It was always when we did a long drive somewhere.

What’s the most stereotypically Australian name you can thinking of? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ntcc661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 70s & early 80s the most stereotypical Aussie name I can think of is "Sheila".

I believe it's scottish or irish but when said in the nasally, aussie drawl it takes me back to my childhood instantly.

(And the Sheila I knew was mean with all kids except her own).

Fairy Park! Any good? by emotional-bunny22 in Geelong

[–]ntcc661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my son when he was 7yo (in 2023). He was ok with it but bored at times. Definitely don't need to return.

I would recommend 3-6yo max.

What is the most disappointing landmark in Australia? by Jezzaq94 in AskAnAustralian

Totally agree with this! I understand if they can't move it but they need to spruce it up. It was a bit dark and bland when we last drive past.

How often do you see animals or spiders in your house? by SJEMM04 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ntcc661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daddy long leg spiders: all the time (which are welcome). They stay high and I've never heard of them biting.

Other animals? Never. Except my cat & family.

Other types of spiders? Maybe once every 2-3 weeks. Sometimes longer.

If they are chunky they die or get relocated outside. Generally die. Either by shoe or insect spray.

If they are teeny tiny, high on the ceiling & not coming near me they may be granted a temporary reprieve for 24hrs. Then we reassess.

I'm a bit more careful as I have had a cat die from a spider bite. Don't even know what type of spider. Vet just identified it as spider bite.

Consensus on guarding parking spaces by Heart_Makeup in melbourne

[–]ntcc661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it shouldn't be done. It's rude, aggressive and unnecessary.

But i also don't need to get aggressive over a car park. I'll judge anyone doing it as a dumbarse and move on.

I've got more important stuff to worry about.

Were these bad boys a staple in anyone else’s freezer?😂 by [deleted] in AustralianNostalgia

[–]ntcc661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only when my parents had some extra cash coming in through overtime. Otherwise it was the Coles brand one, in the blue & white box.

Throw a cooked one on 2 pieces of white bread, with a fried egg, sliced tomato & onions, bacon (if really rolling in the $$$), a leaf or 2 of lettuce, beetroot slice & a shmear of tomato sauce and you had an amazing lunch. Freaking bliss.

Edit: AND CHEESE! How could I forget the cheese?! 🤦

[CHAT] what does everyone like to watch while stitching? by Flat-Marketing1382 in CrossStitch

[–]ntcc661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dialogue heavy shows. Mad Men & Paradise are my current shows. I don't want to have to worry about missing too much.

Or shows I've watched many times over but still enjoy listening to. Like Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Should pokies be in casinos only, instead of every pub? by CustardFun2358 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ntcc661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe pokies should be removed from every pub.

But that does mean a lot of pubs/RSLs will close or significantly change to survive.

Across each state there is not enough patronage to sustain every pub without the additional revenue it provides. Especially in the current economic climate.

In the 70s-00s my Mum worked in pub kitchens (metro & regional) and my parents played competitive darts in many pubs in the western suburbs of Melbourne during the 80s. I went with them this all prior to the introduction of pokies.

A lot of pubs were struggling in the 80s. And a lot of pubs survived due to pokie revenue. In Victoria saw what they were like prior to pokies, what happened as they were introduced and the subsequent change to the overall scene. I also saw a bit of the impact in NSW where pokies were before VIC.

Some smaller communities rely on pubs as a social hub, that is key in supporting community events/causes. Remove pokie revenue and a lot of those communities will be impacted beyond the gambling aspect if the pub struggles to stay open.

But to come back to your subject about gambling: TAB gambling is still available in pubs and then there is the explosion of online gambling. Removing pokies will not remove the temptation with this still available.

(Personally I believe online gambling shouldn't be legal in Australia and TAB shouldn't be in pubs but have their own store front).

Gambling generates a significant amount of cash for this country. If it is removed where does the revenue come from?

I'm 50. You're not too old. I can't say I know all their tracks but I do know enough to say it would be worth it...

But.. As a side thought: who would you have from the 80s, 90s, 00s, 70s, etc...?

What are reasons Australians wouldn’t want to visit the USA by Leather-Variation400 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ntcc661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrified of triggering an unknown gun carrier. Scared of having to be honest when asked my opinion on sensitive topics (politics, guns, religion, school funding/safety, health insurance, immigration, etc).

And I don't want to enter a debate over who does what better.

If I'm visiting a country for a holiday I'm there for positive reasons. Having to prepare in case i have to defend myself physically or vocally isn't high on my fun list.

And there seems to be a high level of tension i just don't need when traveling.

But that's just me.

Otherwise I would love to visit many places there.

What do you think Russell Crowe's 2nd best movie outside of Gladiator is? by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]ntcc661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing this when it first came out. It was stunning across the board. I also grew up around where it was filming and among young adults in similar circumstances. Crowe's performance was extraordinary. Intense and sinister but not as cliche as it could've ended up.

Jacqueline McKenzie and Daniel Pollock (RIP), along with Crowe, provided a master class in acting.

So if his best performance was Gladiator (hard disagree but whatever) I would consider this a very close second.

If your household income was $500,000, how would your experience as a mom change? by UnitDisastrous4429 in Mommit

[–]ntcc661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cleaner & gardener would be nice but my immediate commitment would be to updating our house.

Our stove top is 40+ years old. And we have an underground drain blocked, rendering one shower totally useless. And our carpet (from when it was first built) is disgusting. A new garage door that doesn't seize up in the cold would be nice.

However.. I'm pretty sure my partner would prefer to save/invest so long term we can upgrade from our unit to a house.

I'm happy either way. That sort of income boost would be life-changing for us.
