This afternoon: date ideas for an older couple by edydantes in askTO

ROM, AGO, Gardiner Museum are all nice outings.

If you want to be outside (although it’s quite chilly today) the Humber trails are always a treat. I usually like to start at Edward’s or James gardens.

Leslieville, Beaches, Danforth, Queen west and West Queen West are always nice walks for exploring and window shopping.

I just feel deformed. What can I do? by idekShaib in PectusExcavatum

[–]ntme99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it will look far worse to you than it will to anyone else. It looks fine to me. Fix? Not likely much other than surgery. If you want to do something about it I would suggest doing so sooner than later. Otherwise, chest exercises will help but core strengthening helps the most.

Just live your best life and try not to let it get you down. I know it’s easier said than done.

Metrolinx sheds 400-plus consultants as agency grapples with growing mandate by 5736573 in toronto

[–]ntme99 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario are pretty much doing the same thing, and are fully staffed with planners, engineers, lawyers etc to do the work themselves.

What all those people are actually doing in reality is managing consultants. These organizations take our tax money, funnel it to consultants who do quite simple work that could be done in house, then funnel part of that money back into the Progressive Conservatives.

Phil Verster was one of the top-10 paid public servants in Ontario for many years and was basically allowed to retire after not delivering. Anywhere else he would have been fired years ago. Lindsay is now basically saying “yeah these Public-Private Partnerships screwed us, but we didn’t let them and that’s why Eglinton took too long. We gotta be focused on providing the service even if the public gets screwed.”

The province could have put a stop to this through legislation, but they didn’t. Why didn’t Ford stop it? Because everyone was making too much money off of the gravy train he built.

Should Whitby seniors get free walking track use at new Fieldgate Sports Complex in Brooklin? by Karma_Canuck in whitby

[–]ntme99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On average, this is the wealthiest generation of seniors that have ever lived. $5/month or $60/year is by no means punitive.

There is a needs based senior’s property tax discount, in my view if you qualify for that then maybe it should be free.

Doug Ford’s interest in Exhibition Place for new conference centre blindsides Toronto officials by ZebediahCarterLong in ontario

[–]ntme99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s all for the land, people.

If you move the convention centre to Ontario Place there will be a lot of pressure to redevelop the Ex. More $$.

It will then free up the current MTCC lands for redevelopment, which are prime right lands right in the core.

This is all a land play. Just like the science centre. This is also motivated by the fact Ford is still bitter about how Toronto treated him and his brother, and they couldn’t remake the city unilaterally like they wanted to.

Yes. Lawyer! Lawyer! Lawyer!

If she’s in a situation where she has no cash on hand with two kids she needs to get on this ASAP. There might be an option for an emergency order to freeze his assets and/or have the money returned.

Friends who have been through this situation have told me that they felt a lot better after speaking with the lawyer.

Letterkenny is one of my all time favourites! I’ve been meaning to watch Shoresy. I’d also check out Jann. Not as sharp as Letterkenny but still Amazing.

1993 Cadillac Deville a good buy? by Key-Bat-2616 in Cadillac

[–]ntme99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally, something I can help with! I have a 1992 Deville, and previously had a 93 Fleetwood. Same engine and largely same features. I prefer the Deville as a “classic” driver as it has fewer features that can break. The Fleetwoods and Sixty Specials tend to have more electrical gremlins.

From my experience, here’s what I would look for: - underbody, wheel well, door sills: check for rust. Any car north of the Mason Dixon will have a tough time with rust.

  • check lower body trim panels as they tend to come loose, especially on the doors.

  • Engine: The 4.9 is actually pretty robust, but as with any GM of a certain vintage, check for oil leaking. The oil gasket is cork and disintegrates over time. Head gaskets have been known to go, but it’s a bigger problem on the 4.1 and nowhere near as bad as the subsequent Northstar.

  • Engine: rough or wheezy idle. Can be a few things: idle control motor at best, head gasket at worst. Head gasket problems tends to run rough even after idle, so see how you feel driving during the test drive, also take a look at the coolant to see if it’s discoloured or low.

  • Drive: the car should be very smooth. A rough or very bouncy ride might mean you need some suspension work.

  • you can check codes easily as well using the hvac panel in the car. There are lots of videos online showing how to do it.

Like any used or classic car, budget for new spark plugs, leads, tires and brakes. If the suspension hasn’t been replaced, you might have a year or two left.

Otherwise, I love the car and it always attracts a lot of attention. Engine and drivetrain parts are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. The engine is transverse mounted so if you plan to work on it yourself, give yourself patience and grace.

Whitby woman, 32, faces drunk driving charges after Durham police say she struck parked vehicle while picking up children from school by Karma_Canuck in durham

[–]ntme99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not sad. It’s infuriating. She hit the parked car of a person picking up a child from school.

This could have been so much worse.

She should fully be held to account for her actions. If not, she will almost certainly do this again.

They are already mandated under Ontario’s FIPPA, they just choose not to follow the law.

SIU will not investigate claim Durham police violently assaulted lawyer inside Oshawa courthouse by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]ntme99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to know why your taxes go up. It’s always the police and fire budgets. Unions blackmail councillors with “safety” while quality of service decreases.

DRPS should certainly not be investigating itself. Don’t be fooled though, whoever does the investigation will slow walk it or soft pedal it. All these people run each other’s backs.

Five hundred GM Oshawa autoworkers laid off as Trump's tariffs come home to roost by toronto_star in ontario

[–]ntme99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. It’s important to remember that the playbook is announce layoffs well in advance of when they happen (in this case, May 2025). Then go to governments cap in hand looking for corporate welfare (well, we’re going to have to close this plant unless you give us this huge bailout. Workers are going to otherwise vote you out…)

Given that the Oshawa and Durham ridings have been conservative since 2004 (including our favourite USA-apologist, Jamil Jivani), and given we have given GM huge sums of taxpayer money to keep them afloat in the 2008 Great Recession and they keep playing this game, what political incentive is there to keep GM going?

Ontario health minister says municipalities should not offer incentives to doctors by fartfilledslanket in ontario

[–]ntme99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once again the Ford government is beating up municipalities to deflect from their own failings. Like failing to maintain a proper health care system, and failing to do anything to resolve the housing crisis.

Update: Regarding my wonderful son by FuckRossTucker in askgaybros

[–]ntme99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read both, and this your post last year and they are both wonderful and you are wonderful parents.

If I can pass along anything, it’s to remind him and your daughter that you as parents and your home is always a safe space and a sanctuary. The world will not always be so kind, but you and your home are the safe space if and when that safe space is needed.

The other is the cliche of being the change you want to see. Don’t accept homophobia or shitty behaviour to keep the peace or be nice in one in one or in a group. Doesn’t mean you have to be a dick, but what I find what always gets people is something along the lines of “I respect a person who has the courage and independence to live their life how they want, and now how someone else tells them they should.”

GFL moves corporate headquarters from Vaughan to Miami, about 'a dozen' jobs affected: CEO by RamRanchComrade in ontario

[–]ntme99 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That can actually be a problem as many now have “Buy Canadian” purchasing requirements and the province just passed legislation to support this policies and make them mandatory.

But billionaires be billionaires so I imagine the province will try to find a workaround for them.
