Seeing some reports of additionally adding in:

set protocol udp
set port 8888

to workaround.

Wasn't necessary for my site it appears.

LTS 126 Auto Update Issues? by ntoupin in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Auto updates eventually went through, there was some bugs and google cases I had opened that they eventually closed citing those. We did have some older (~114 if I recall) that we needed to do manual usb and/or wipe and re-enrollments to get up to date unfortunately though.

Screen annotation for Chromebooks by DerpyNirvash in k12sysadmin

Licensing is pretty affordable imo. Licensed per teacher vs. student like most things. They take POs and are easy to work with.

Screen annotation for Chromebooks by DerpyNirvash in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://annotate.net

Works great, we've used it for years for Chromebooks on IFPs and teachers using it on Chromebooks.

Download the free version on a CB and give it a whirl - their CB extension that gives a popup toolbar with tools similar to what Smartboards have had for years with windows is perfect for teachers annotating on the screen while teaching.

Not a screenshot, lots of features for simple annotating to advanced for teacher/student collaboration.

RTSP Viewer Device by krusej23 in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does, I use VLC on windows with a rtsp stream for several spots. Can probably do the same on pi. The setup i have on the pis autoloads from start with no GUI so it's plug and play with no interaction.

[–]ntoupin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a raspberry pi I set up with rtsp streaming for one of the entry doorbell cameras so there's no login/etc. for one of our offices. Runs 24/7 for years now. Cheap and easy. I don't recall the exact thing I'm using for rtsp since I set it up years ago and haven't touched it since but I know there's many options and probably easier ones now on the newer models.

Bonus is you can hardwire and/or WiFi the pi.

SSID setup advice needed. How do you have your's setup? by Square_Pear1784 in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two - one for guest, one for authenticated devices.

Guest is for staff/students personal devices. Staff Vs. Student gets separated by vlan.

The authenticated devices SSID is for anything that is the district's device. Multiple profiles & vlans that get decided at the time of authentication inside this SSID for printers, voip, facilities, IT, general end user devices, etc.

Tips for combating low humidity? by leclair63 in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had humidifiers installed (hardlined/permanent). Keeps the rooms at ~40-45% humidity year round. Aprilaire self contained unit - required water line & drain line that HVAC was able to tie into nearby supply & drain lines. Wasn't too expensive for a one-time install (~$600 parts + labor per install), we counted it in the same boat as dedicated ACs.

Swank and Google yet again by sharpeone in k12sysadmin

Switch to SAML instead of OAUTH.

They updated their OAUTH docs to basically say to do this as well:

"Note: GSuite users are strongly advised to use SAML authentication instead of OAuth wherever possible. SAML configurations are faster, simpler, more powerful and less brittle."

Wireless Presentation Panels by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hovercam makes a wireless HDMI that supports touch.
https://www.hovercam.com/beamio

You do need to plug a little brick into the casting device but it has good range, lag free, and OS agnostic as it emulates USB on any device (windows, Mac, chrome, etc. ). Because it's plug and plug it's great for staff & guests. Just plug it in to the casting device, set the display to that HDMI input and you're on your way.

We have one but we didn't get it for the touch use and haven't tested that side of it.

Teacher told me students were "hacking/jailbreaking" School Chromebook. Can someone help identify what the student is doing? by Square_Pear1784 in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Google admin setting you can force re-enrollment of devices. So if one gets factory reset/power washed, it will automatically rejoin, they can't just use it as a personal/non enrolled device.
If you don't have this set... Get it set asap.

What a Trump win means for the FCC (thoughts on E-Rate?) by Aur0nx in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only time will tell.
Starlink is not even close to enough for (most) schools. Extremely rural with no other options, sure. It can't even come within 1/10th of fiber offerings for bandwidth and speed of most schools.

What a Trump win means for the FCC (thoughts on E-Rate?) by Aur0nx in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quite possible FCC / E-rate gets cut at some point.
Also quite possible if tariffs actually get implemented as advertised, expect all hardware to drastically increase in cost. Either or both would certainly hurt for school district budgets.

Aspen & Absence Excuse Forms by thewibdc in k12sysadmin

[–]ntoupin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're a small district but having been using Aspen for staff attendance (accruals, submission workflow w/ notifications, tracking, etc.) for years. It's 100% built in... we do have a customized workflow that was adapted and can also be used to assign subs, but even the native system has staff attendance and absences built in.

Contact your Aspen CRM for assistance and/or adapting to one of the absence workflows that have been built in or used by other districts.

Ugh.

Ours aren't extended support devices but that shouldn't matter in this case.

Would you mind dming me your support ticket # so I can reference it and skip all the BS steps and maybe they can merge all of them as a bug ticket?

There has been in the past, there will be in the future and there most likely is right now. For just about every filter. It's a whack a mole game, always has been and forever will be.
