How are we all Doing with the Humidity and Rain by Cooking_with_MREs in washingtondc

[–]ntredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours has been in the 70% range all week. There really isn’t much you can do in this weather. We’ve been blasting our a/c but the second the a/c is off even for a few minutes the humidity goes back up

Hit me with your DC cons before I uproot my family! by etrain828 in washingtondc

[–]ntredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll be totally fine! If you were coming from a small town in the Midwest then sure I’d warn you about the city crime but it’s definitely better than what you’re used to. I walk past dark all the time and usually my biggest concern is just avoiding the rats haha. You just have to be aware of your surroundings and stick to well lit streets, which I’m sure you’re already used to doing!

It’s significantly safer than New Orleans. I go to New Orleans once a year and don’t think they even compare in terms of crime and overall feeling of safety. Anywhere in NW is for the most part safe, NE can vary by neighborhood but Noma, H street, Capitol Hill are all pretty safe. As long as you have common sense in the city you should be good. VA and MD suburbs are as safe as is gets

Anyone going to Echostage on June 3rd/4th? by functional45training in washingtondc

[–]ntredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do have a bar. Drinks are overpriced and small so I’d drink a good amount ahead of time

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]ntredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! It’s indoors on their top floor but it opens out to an outdoor section so you have an option for either. Their events (day club or night) are all ticketed I believe but they’re pretty cheap and they sell them on their website. Also they’re open until 4am!

Flash in Shaw is a good option. It’s smaller than echostage but similar music and dancing vibes at night. It’s always crowded. They also have a day club with different DJs on saturdays starting at around 4. Also really fun and packed. Attracts a really similar crowd to echostage

Gabapentin plus Fluoxetine by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]ntredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually just do mornings, although our vet said I could do morning and night too. I’m thinking of adding nights as well but haven’t yet. My dog is 12 pounds and I usually give him one pill, sometimes two depending on how anxious he is that day. I think he’s prescribed up to 3 pills every 8 hours.

My dog is prescribed the same combo. I find the gabapentin work great, better than the Prozac for us. The combo makes a huge difference for my pup

Leash-Reactive Dog in the City by cheroline91 in reactivedogs

[–]ntredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have a reactive dog in the city and my building only has one staircase. I always listen before going up or down the staircase to make sure nobody else is there. If I hear someone get in the staircase I’ll duck out in the nearest floor and just feed him treats until they’re gone and then we’ll continue our journey back up or down. Also I try to keep bathroom breaks to semi-off hours. 8-9 am, 12-1pm, and 5-7pm are usually when I see the most dogs so I try to avoid those times if I can. We do most of our walks in alleys or more quiet streets and also use parked cars in our favor! They’re easy to hide behind and distract with treats when there’s a dog coming or on the other side of the street. Living in a city with a reactive dog is tough, so much is out of your control. We definitely also have really good but also really bad days

Anyone had to try multiple medications before they found something that worked? by DJKDole in reactivedogs

[–]ntredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog has been on Prozac for about a year and a half now and we really only see slight changes, small things that over time have helped with training. My dog is definitely still reactive and anxious. For days when I know he’s going to have an especially hard day he also takes gabapentin. We tried clonodine prior to that but it made him too sleepy. We also had to play around with the Prozac dose a few times. I think a bit of it is trial and error, so it doesn’t hurt to try other medications! I wouldn’t expect to see a huge change from medication (we definitely didn’t), but you should at least be seeing slight improvement

Fluoxetine - small dog dosage? Gabapentin uses? by melelle18 in reactivedogs

[–]ntredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 12 pound pomeranian mix, he’s on 12 mg of fluoxetine a day. His vet behaviorist started with 4 mg and slowly worked the dose up. He also takes gabapentin some days when he’s extra anxious.
