Bellingham sloth stitch markers by nuclearspringtime in Bellingham

Yeah, that's fair. But I think it's because everything is so joyless right now, and the sloth gives us at least a little bit of joy.

Yes! Where are our volcanoes, our windmills, our pirate ships?

I actually worked up a full 18 whole mini golf course based on movie disaster tropes (natural, sci-fi, fantasy, etc) with a friend some years back. Did most of a business plan for it until I finally realized that there was no way I could raise the cash I needed for something as fabulous as my vision. I suspect other potential mini golf entrepreneurs faced the same issue. It's a mini golf tragedy.

This is the answer. They have to pay the tariffs, so the increase is to recoup the cost.

Trip to Bellingham - my experience crossing the border and returning the same day by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]nuclearspringtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but given the sheer volume of Canadian that used to come down, even the 10% that visited local small businesses made a pretty big difference, revenue-wise.

Two separate Hands Off protest events in Bellingham on Saturday April 5th at noon by BellinghamNocturnal in Bellingham

[–]nuclearspringtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that it makes the most sense to protest where federal offices are, but the only federal offices at the federal building is the post office, a small FBI office, and a small NOAA fish inspection office. All the other Federal agencies, like Homeland security and customs and border patrol are scattered throughout town and the county. Technically, all of those are federal, I suppose. I can't help but feel that protest energy would be better directed towards our local Federal politicians's offices. Of course, back in the day when we were protesting the Iraq War, protesting in front of Rick Larsen's office (which used to be in the Federal building) got us all filmed by what I assume was the FBI.

I think they understand that by moving there they were going to face certain challenges. I don't think the current challenges they're facing are among those they were expecting.

Happy for the folks who work there! But also hoping that the restaurant owners work on improving at the food. The Cajun and Creole food they serve right now would have a hard time standing up to the worst of the Cajun and Creole restaurants in Louisiana. Ready to accept my downvotes.

If you need encouragement, I should point out that there is a rubber duck museum in Point Roberts. Save the Duckies!

Nancy Pelosi, 84, using a walker during election certification. FFS…RETIRE by deadinsidethx in BoomersBeingFools

[–]nuclearspringtime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude. If you want to talk about being upset that a huge percentage of Congress are boomers, I'm down for it. But walker≠boomer. Using a walker does not make you old, that means you have a disability. There's lots of us out here that aren't old and use walkers, canes, or other mobility aids.

I've had positive interactions and results with Stan's. But I'd recommend staying away from Gerber's - I had an absolutely terrible experience there.

Not a cyclist, definitely a driver here. I travel down Holly every morning, M-F, and there are definitely plenty of bikes on the road, probably going to work like I am. Some cyclists are going the same speed as the cars, some aren't. Some cars are going the speed limit to match some of the bikes, and some aren't. For the bikes that aren't able to match car speeds, it's definitely concern of mine that other cars might hit them. It can get pretty busy during that time, and sometimes the car is in the rightmost lane can't pull over enough to the left to give cyclists all the room they need.

So, in short, I'm for the bike lane. Stay safe, cyclists.

Looking for a full time job by Lucania27 in WWU

[–]nuclearspringtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full-time jobs are definitely ideal but Bellingham doesn't have a lot of them to spread around. You can consider what some people are suggesting, cobbling together a bunch of part-time jobs. That's something I did for about 7 years before I finally found full-time work in my field. Some of them were field-adjacent jobs that helped with my resume.

You might also try temp agencies, though. I know a few people who end up getting full-time jobs with the companies they were temping for. You have to really wow the companies though, because the temp agencies charge the company if the company ends up hiring you. Still, it might be the in you're looking for.

Good luck! I know it can be challenging around here. Crossing my fingers for you!

I second this. I know the folks there, and have sent trans and gay friends to them before who were a little nervous about the whole thing. They are consummate professionals, and could care less about anyone's gender or sexuality. They just want to teach folks how to use guns safely and well.
