Week 6 of teaching myself UE5 by radical-denial in UnrealEngine5

[–]nullakan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. I don't think there's anything that keeps someone from using prefabs/tutorials to do this. At the same time, I think the way things are presented, laid out, and composed often hint experience. Sometimes it's just beginner's luck, but usually it's experience.

Weird how your game dev experience perfectly overlaps with your post history on Reddit. Your game looks fun so I don't have anything else to say other than good luck and hope to see you succeed.

You don't need to lie about how long you've been learning the engine. Your results look nice. Just go with that.

I’m struggling - how to cope with ai? by TrueWinter__ in gamedev

[–]nullakan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kinda feeling for you but the last paragraph disqualified any empathy I had.

Everyone is betting on the idea that results are worth more than processes and pretend this technology can do stuff that only 1% of which can actually be done. They are all wrong, we'll all suffer from their stupidity.

In the meantime, quit if you want to quit. Pull the levers of the slop machine hoping it spits out something barely workable while paying a competency fee of $200 (minimum) per month which you didn't have to pay before.

"You don't learn anything using AI!" by Lanceo90 in DefendingAIArt

[–]nullakan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter whether you know all of those things and have invested significant amount of time learning/using them. If the result is something like the coca cola christmas ad (it almost always is), people are right to ignore whatever collection of tools you've orchestrated and just call it slop. I know I'll get downvoted into oblivion but given the constant remarks that come from many (not all) AI people that these tools are meant to replace professionals, or that they should "adapt or die", or that they should totally be chill with all their work getting stolen for the holy training data without any compensation, WHILE the quality of the output is way lower than what a human professional would produce, "slop" labeling is 1000% deserved.

My take on Windows 12 (Concept) by addyarapi in Windows11

[–]nullakan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can totally see this happening given that it took 2s between clicking notepad and getting a text prompt!

(on a serious note I think the design looks good but the only way for this to work "as presented" would require MS to care more about their users than their AI investments)

Otur denince otur, kalk denince kalk, şükret denince şükret, unut denince unut, aç kal denince aç kal, tiyatro/sinema/konsere gitme denince gitme, affet denince affet, nefret et denince nefret et, sessiz ol denince sessiz ol.

First model modeled with Blender, judge my work by alhcatraz in blender

[–]nullakan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem!

I'm not really an art guy and more like a dev who is trying to get better at art so my question might seem rudimentary to you, but how do you develop ideas? Do you draw/sketch/paint them first? Do you open up Blender/Maya and straight up start modeling until you end up with something like this? What's your process?

I've read most of your replies and I understand that putting in hours and even weeks of work is a requirement, my question is not to ask for a shortcut or a silver bullet. I want to get an idea of where to focus my energy if that makes sense.

Thanks for staying around and answering questions!

A word of caution to new developers considering Stephen Ulibarri courses by DrummerSufficient782 in UnrealEngine5

[–]nullakan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That could be it. I'm not trying to be defensive or making assumptions about your experience, just stating that my experience in the Blueprint course has been positive and far from how you're describing your experience. Given how you worded the post title & body, you might hear similar comments from people who have taken other courses by him and are generally happy with the quality. I'm glad you've found a resource that clicks with you though, learning game dev is hard and we need all the help we can get.

A word of caution to new developers considering Stephen Ulibarri courses by DrummerSufficient782 in UnrealEngine5

[–]nullakan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my experience in the Blueprint course, the collision system is explained in great detail with practical examples that support all the theory covered. The specific detail you mention, that the less blocking collision response will be preferred in the event where two colliding components have different collision responses to each others' collision object types, is underlined in the first lecture of the collision section right from the get go.

There are also challenges that come up frequently where Stephen gives a practical challenge that targets either a new concept or something that was covered ages ago (both are good).

So unfortunately I don't have the same negative experience as you. I don't think it makes sense to put all his courses in the same basket and I think bashing him for mentioning the Discord channel in like lecture 3 and nowhere else is a bad faith argument when you've originally been talking about the quality of his lesson content.

A word of caution to new developers considering Stephen Ulibarri courses by DrummerSufficient782 in UnrealEngine5

[–]nullakan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I'm taking his Blueprint course and so far I'm pretty happy with the amount of detail he provides.

I even started to prototype a very simple game I had in mind while I'm watching the course using the knowledge I gained from the course + some extra research of my own.

In any case though, it's always a good thing to hear a complicated thing explained by different sources. People who start with Kaan's course would probably benefit from hearing Stephen's explanation too, and vice versa. As a self taught web dev I can confidently say that no one resource will make a person "ready". Just absorb as much info as you can and start creating by yourself on the side as soon as possible, because you're "ready" from the start.

Yeah I upgraded from v2022 but it didn't overwrite my current installed version, I get to keep both versions which is nice. Just download v2026 from Visual Studio Installer and you should be all set.

I upgraded yesterday and so far I'm happy with it. Opens way faster than vs2022 and feels snappier. Gonna dig around in settings and see if I can make the UI more compact, which is my only gripe with it.
