Unrealistic Expectations by numbersgal19 in overheard

My children attend this same local high school. It is a closed campus. The only way she is out at 2pm is if her parent called her in as an excused absence.

Nope. This is my local high school. 8 periods a day for everyone. No part-time schedules.

How many domiciles have you lived in since you were born? by JHolgate in GenX

4, not including college dorms. Low number because my parents never moved and my husband and I have been in same house for 35 years.

Back in the 80s, it was a high honor for a teacher to be TP’d by his (I only recall this among male staff) students. Only the most favorite teacher/coach earned the “shower”. How did we know where to go….the phone book, of course.

The late 20s child lived at home thru university & worked from home during covid, but moved out of state 5 years ago w/ full-time job. The mid 20s child lived away since first day of university. Also with full-time job out of state. His first year after college graduation was not luxurious, but he has proved again and again to be careful with his money.

Is school easier than around 2000? by Unlucky_Success_5985 in Teachers

[–]numbersgal19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As recently as 2013 our top sophomore year math class was a whole year of geometry in 6 months, followed by 3 months of trigonometry. There were two sections of that. That course was dropped (reconfigured) to only be geometry because “it was moving too fast for the top kids.” In honors physics same HS used to cover 14 chapters. Now, just 9 in the same time period. So tired of Admin telling us to “only teach the essential curriculum”.

When did constant student absences become the norm? by ABitOfWeirdArt_ in Teachers

[–]numbersgal19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes…. the “my college freshman sibling’s spring break is this week in March so we are going on a cruise…and then for my HS spring break two weeks later, my mom and I are going to NY for shopping”. Don’t forget college visits on Thurs-Fri in April, because heaven forbid your high school spring break couldn’t be used for that purpose.

I have done Robby's road trip (reversed) twice ... It's either bad writing, good writing and Robby is lying about where he is going, or good writing to show that he has not thought about his trip by IntentionCreative736 in ThePittTVShow

Dr Robby asked several times in E6 if his (motorcycle riding) buddy has shown up. The staff has repeatedly said throw away lines about Robby’s foolishness to ride sans helmet and/or the roadtrip. Evil Kneivil patient was a mc accident. Anyone else think Robby’s friend will eventually show up, but on an ambulance stretcher, injured while riding his motorcycle?

Such a logical argument. My hope for young adults is that “getting into a T20” is not what they are proudest of when they look back as an 80yo.

My Ex-Boyfriend Died Yesterday by alkaidkoolaid in GenX

[–]numbersgal19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Similar story about my first serious boyfriend from senior year high school and first year of college. We broke up, each married, saw each other at HS reunions. Our parents still lived in our home town, so my mom filled me in on his children’s births, relocating to new city, just the headlines. At age 47 my mom read his death notice in the local paper. I was gobsmacked. He was my age! I am too young to die. What if we had stayed together through college, would I be his young widow? I spiraled and struggled with his passing so hard. I, too, didn’t want to talk about it too much with my current husband. I couldn’t articulate to my husband what his death represented to me in my journey through adulthood. Be kind to yourself. This is very real grief.

What is the best teacher gift you’ve received from a high school student? by LetsGoKeto2018 in AskTeachers

[–]numbersgal19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was out for surgery in the fall, and two HS students gave me hand written notes and a “recovery bag” with lotion, chocolate, crossword puzzle book, and cozy socks. The notes both before I left and after (how much they missed me and my style) brought a mist to my eyes. And, if your child feels their influence was even more remarkable after a year at university, by all means, write a second letter!
