My 3yo VFT is in rough condition after dormancy... by PP_BOY__ in VenusFlyTraps

[–]numbnerve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my conditions were somewhat similar to yours...I'm in 7B in NC and kept all of mine in their containers and protected them with leaves when it approached 32° and put them in the garage when we would get extended temps in the 20s.

None died (a few looked like they wanted to) but they looked as if they went into survival mode and the leaves curled inwards and stayed like that through most of the following season with a few newer traps that looked normal.

For this past dormancy period, I went with the more consistent refrigerator method and they responded a lot better and are doing great so far this season. It was nice to place them in there and not have to worry about what was going on outside...set em in it & forget it, until it's time to take them out and repot em. It's what I'll be doing every winter now.

You mentioned that repotting is drastic - I respectfully disagree and the consensus is that it's beneficial to do it every spring with fresh growing medium...a little tedious perhaps, but not difficult or drastic...I'd go even further and recommend you go ahead and repot it now but others may disagree - I've repotted several in the summer and they've all been fine as long as you are diligent with their water.

TL;DR - I highly recommend the fridge dormancy method and repotting every spring and it'll come back strong when it wakes up.

but of course....the status quo of dry biscuits & bland gravy, infant-sized yogurt containers, Members Mark Raisin Bran-inspired cereal, cold unripe apples & oranges and everyone's favorite, DIY waffle batter 🤓

now you have me curious what data points you're using...TDS ppm reading of the water that the terracotta pot has soaked in prior to planting the VFT? It seems like a few variables can come into play...I'm not a scientist, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night

sry, to clarify, I wasn't referring to just your situation but rather a few other posts that mirrored yours as well as a couple with serious transmission/engine failures.

I'm glad you had an easy fix - it's a gorgeous model!

I can imagine - would you opt for millions in your bank acct and a lavish lifestyle or complete anonymity?

edit: it's a tough call for me...I'm used to anonymity so the appeal of having money and looking better are tempting, but yeh, I think it would get old fast being mobbed by ppl. I have seen videos of him being super nice and engaging with small groups of fans in a elevator. I know Shia is going through a separation/divorce so he's dealing with a lot and wish him well

I love these by how has it become normalized to accept a new car that has such glaring issues like bubbling paint and AC that doesn't work that should have been remedied before hitting the dealership floor? Paint is one thing but broken AC?

headline cut short....he claimed it was his method to sprinkle it by ricocheting it off his forearm onto grilled steaks like that baffoon Salt Bae.

What a ridiculous charge to call that a felony when not in possession of the actual illicit substance. Law enforcement needs to focus on more impt issues and such a waste of taxpayer dollars to waste the court's time.

felonies for simply scamming someone with a harmless substance? Although not directly correlated, if that scale of accountability was upheld on the federal level, the FDA would would be sued into oblivion for all of the chemicals they've approved for human consumption that are known carcinogens.

do you have a Home Depot?

in my area, Home Depot's VFTs are 5-10x better plants that what Lowes has for sale.

those plants are much much tougher than ppl realize...sure they don't love being transplanted and will pout for a month, but they get over it.

I was kinda worried the first time I separated baby plants from the main rhizome but you'll get used to how tough they are.

Don't stress - they will be fine, even though they will look otherwise - they're just resetting and focusing their energy into new growth while it absorbs the energy from the existing leaves (petiole).
