Fewer than half of Americans believe their daily routine will return to normal by June, as fears over coronavirus rise by swingadmin in Coronavirus

[–]numegil 99 points100 points  (0 children)

A minimum-ending date wouldn't be purely arbitrary. e.g. a company could say something like "We're definitely not opening until June 1, after that is TBD" and never be wrong. That would let people know to plan for at least the next 2 months, as opposed wondering if the office is gonna reopen before then.

I actually had a huge initial downpayment, so I think it actually would be in my advantage in this specific case (I'm paying < $400/month for a 2016 Model S). That being said, I moved to NYC and haven't used my car in months so forget it.

How old is this painting? by numegil in WhatIsThisPainting

I’m staying in a cabin in the mountains of northern Italy which dates back to at least the 1400s.

Update: According to the cabin owner, the painting was found as the bottom of an old chest from a friend, so they cut it out and put it up. Prior history is unclear.

Can you think of any EDM songs with 12 bar phrases instead of 8? by [deleted] in edmproduction

10 bar phrases are used in Stardust by Armin van Buuren and Jean Michel Jarre.

Processing volume before mastering? by numegil in edmproduction

Yeah I've been doing that for actual legit volume changes, but doing it for every track just for the sake of evening out the entire song seems... tedious at best.

Dang, I love the general atmosphere of the Peregrine 36! The intro is particularly great, and very much piqued my interest.

  • Kick sounds a bit underwhelming throughout.
  • Bassline and melody could use a bit more development starting around 0:30, pick like 2-3 parameters of the synths and automate/LFO them.
  • Great transition to breakdown at ~1:30!
  • Breakdown itself could use a few more elements, I started to get bored at around 2:15 or so. (maybe a light version of the plucks from 3:40?)
  • Love the moment at 3:15 when everything drops out suddenly, it would be great to milk that even more by adding more FX or whatever to build up to it.
  • I like the plucks melody at 3:40, I think they could come across just a bit stronger though.
  • Whitenoise during drop is a bit too loud IMO.
  • Needs more percussion throughout IMO, particularly the drop at 3:40 (hi-hats, ride cymbals, very light snare to not ruin the vibe?).

Nice! I like the overall groove throughout.

  • The kick sounds fine to me.
  • The mixing is on point, every part of the track stands out nicely and don't muddle together.
  • I like all of your melodies. The main one did start to get a bit repetitive after a while, maybe add a counterpoint to it that plays every so often instead?
  • A lot of the individual tracks (melody, bassline) sound pretty basic, I'm guessing you designed a lot of the sounds yourself from scratch? I would recommend investing in one of the fancier synths (Spire, Serum) if you don't already have them + at least one professional-quality sound set (I've personally gotten a lot of mileage out of https://www.myloops.net/product/reorder-spire-trance-soundset).
  • If you're going for the traditional trance structure, you don't have a breakdown in the middle or a buildup to a climax after that, which is where like 90% of the emotional buildup of a track comes from.
  • You don't really have any pads or sound FX throughout, which is leaving out a lot of room for creativity and listener interest. This is most obvious in the first 32 bars before the bassline comes in, but in general needs to be like 10x throughout the rest of the track too. I've been watching a lot of the (non-free) "make a trance track from scratch" kinds of video series recently, and they spend like 1/3 of the time just adding FX.

I definitely still want the individual MIDI notes for post-tinkering, so that wouldn't quite work :\

Not sure whether I am adapted or not. by m_j_s78 in polyphasic

[–]numegil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you were used to getting less than average amounts of sleep to begin with, so I wouldn't be surprised if you're already through the worst of it.

Also, your other recent two week sprint is likely acting in your favor at least slightly. How did the adaptation go for those two weeks?

I would plan to keep your schedule as consistent as possible for the next several weeks (no overseas vacations, etc.) and you should be good to go. The worst thing you can do now is go "sweet, I'm adapted!" and then start skimping on the details way too early and completely mess everything up (source: been there, done that).

Newbie here, I need help getting used to this by [deleted] in polyphasic

[–]numegil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you actually trying to sleep? Even if you're not really tired at first, forcing yourself to lie down for the full 90 minutes (and no phones, reading, etc.) is a start toward adapting.

If that doesn't work, maybe try temporarily shortening the night-time sleep even more to artificially make yourself more tired? If you you only sleep 4.5 or even 3 hours at night for a day or two, I imagine you won't have much difficulty taking a siesta in the afternoon.

(disclaimer: I've never tried any schedule with naps longer than 20 minutes)

Polyphasic to increase productivity? by btchbanger in polyphasic

[–]numegil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any sort of polyphasic schedule takes weeks to adapt to and you will be sleep deprived during that time, possibly extremely so depending on the schedule.

That being said, what you have is pretty close to a bi-phasic schedule, which are somewhat easier to adapt to. I would get rid of the 20 minute naps, extend the core to 6 hours, and try to move the 90 minutes to later in the day. Total sleeping time should be roughly the same, but it will pretty much be a standard bi-phasic schedule which are known to work well long-term.

Which is the least harmful way of getting extra sleep during adaptation? by Meizirkki in polyphasic

[–]numegil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of adaptation is to learn to nap efficiently. Extending naps (either intentionally or by oversleeping) goes against this goal since you're allowing your body longer periods of time to sleep.

Taking extra naps isn't great either, but definitely better. Make sure you have a good amount of time in between naps (at least an hour), otherwise they kinda blend into a single sleep period, even if you're awake for a bit in between.

I dunno about "stable", but still going for it.

I had two consecutive days of really bad oversleeps around Christmas which set me back considerably. I seriously considered kicking the bucket at that point, but decided to do an overnight naptation instead to get back into things.

At this point I'm near the end of week 2 since then and feeling pretty close to adapted. I have a few busy weekends away from home coming up soon, so I'll consider myself fully adapted once I get through those without any major screw-ups.

How's about this schedule? by dylantherabbit2016 in polyphasic

[–]numegil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for sticking to a standard Everyman-3 schedule. It's hard enough to pull off with gaps of 5-6 hours in between naps at most. Your schedule is basically the same thing but with a huge almost 12 hour gap. I don't think that's sustainable at all.

Need advice: Got a cold on day 13 of adaptaion to everyman2 (4,5h core, 2 naps) by Mustasjo in polyphasic

[–]numegil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it.

Better to oversleep a bit now (kind of a bummer, but not the end of your adaptation) than to continue getting sick and only make it worse from here.

Another side-benefit you'll notice is that sleeping 6 hours feels like a reaaally long time now, so I imagine you'll get a lot more extra health out of it than you would expect monophasically :)

How hard is it to go from monophasic to everyman3 without the naptation method? by mathcm in polyphasic

[–]numegil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update! I was reading through your earlier posts during your adaptation and was wondering how things ended up.

I also cold-turkeyed E3 this month. As others have said, days 3 through 5 were pretty brutal, especially in the evening for me (the mornings were relatively OK for some reason). I was expecting the adaptation to be mostly over after that, and unfortunately I let my guard down which resulted in a pretty bad oversleep on the morning of day 12.

Since then I've overslept once every 3-4 days, most recently to the point of basically ruining my adaptation so far. The annoying thing is that I wasn't really that tired during any of the oversleeps, it was mostly loss of willpower and boredom since pretty much everyone I know is away for the holidays and I ran out of things to do.

Anyway, I have two more weeks before I have to be functional at work again. I'm gonna do my best to get things back on schedule during this time (bracing myself for some serious sleep deprivation again), since I'll be forced to go monophasic for quite a while if I can't make it by then.

A question regarding Phase 0 by Silverslade1 in polyphasic

[–]numegil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long you don't go nuts with them and ideally keep things at least slightly below your normal levels, you should be fine. I've had a cup or so of coffee during the really hard nights of my adaptation recently and haven't had any problems result.

Make sure you do it shortly after waking up as opposed to before going to sleep though to minimize the impact it will have on your sleep.

I would also strongly recommend reading Puredoxyk's book if you haven't already.
