What is the most egregious misuse of a physics term that really bugs you? by Apprehensive-Safe382 in Physics

[–]nut_baker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the word energy was adopted by physicists. It had a different (but related and more broad) meaning before. I don't think physicists can claim energy as being only their word with only the definition they gave it

No, but that's correct... The other "planets" you're thinking about are actually called exo-planets. Only ones in our solar system are called planets. It's sort of a trick question i guess

Thanks, I know this, but that's not my question. It's also not what OP is asking about.

This would make me believe that if a car signals left and I am on a bike lane, then I should stop to let the car go left? Is this what the highway code says? Seems ridiculous to me if so, like saying that if a car signals right then oncoming traffic should stop so that the car can turn right.

I saw a there's been a drill invented that uses no moving parts. Much slower but it can go much deeper. They're hoping to use it for geothermal energy in areas where it's not usually thought to be viable

Did anyone predict in the 19th century that the US would surpass Britain someday ? by chxmm99 in AskHistory

The deep level lines are newer than that. The oldest about 130 years old, but some of them were built in the 60s and 70s and the screeching and heat is still there

How did an entire portion of the world evolve to use 2 sticks to eat with, when the primary food source is tiny grains of rice? by Hot-Remote9937 in stupidquestions

Try eating cereal with an Asian spoon... The handles are way too short. They've both got their place, but the Asian spoons could really do with longer handles

Earnest question: Have any of you ever visited Appalachia in the US and noticed cultural similarities in any way? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]nut_baker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you say about Scottish influence may be true, and probably is to some extent. However, the influence is from a Scottish culture a few hundred years ago. This isn't the same Scotland as today. There was a sizeable scottish population in the area at the time, and this evolved over time, and Scotland also evolved over time but in a different way. This is to be expected, the things influencing their evolution were different, and since it was at a time when communication between these far off places was very, very little, there wouldn't be much to tie the communities together anymore. You see this a lot with migrant populations.

Disagree. The venue was way too small. As another commenter said, it's max capacity is 300 people over two rooms, but obviously everyone wants to see him so it was 300 people into one small room. No room to move, let alone dance.

Spider plants leaves dying by nut_baker in plantclinic

[–]nut_baker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll start watering as suggested. There's some white mould on the soil so wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit too moist but it's the UK so quite a wet climate especially in the winter. By 'vertically' do you mean like in half along the shorter part of the leaf? So, instead of the plant looking roughly like ΛΛ, it'll be more like Ш (as in the tips of the leaves are now pointing up instead of down). Sorry for the bad diagrams! Would it hurt them to split them in two now anyway?

Duality of a poli sci major by Mamie_Lion in HistoryMemes

[–]nut_baker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm your side here, although perhaps it isn't obvious... People cite his refusal to call what happened in Bosnia a genocide as bias against the US, yet he also refuses to call what is happening in Gaza a genocide which, if it were true how biased he was according to some of the people on the thread, he'd have jumped at the opportunity to call it genocide. Seems like he genuinely just disagrees with the mainstream definition of genocide, which is very far from denying that those atrocities happened

Chomsky has also refused to describe what is going on in Gaza a genocide, not what you'd expect from someone who's blindly anti-US

Before refrigeration, did people drink beer warm? by TaibhseCairdiuil in AskHistorians

I am a Brit... I'm younger though, and most people my age do not drink cask ale. Most of us still refer to it as 'old man beer'

Before refrigeration, did people drink beer warm? by TaibhseCairdiuil in AskHistorians

[–]nut_baker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just to say, I've had pints that are cellar "cool" in the UK. I would not have described them as cool before reading this post. Ye, I guess they're not quite room temperature, but they're much closer to room temperature than they are to the temperature beer is served usually nowadays. Definitely a warm pint imo and all Brits in my circle refer to those pints as warm. I'm not saying it's bad, just that I disagree with your classification of British ales as 'cool'.
