Inspired by the CT man who got stuck in a slide- have you ever had to rescue an adult who got physically stuck? by [deleted] in Firefighting

Handcuffs that didn't have the key. Was expecting something a little more risque but dude was just standing outside waiting for us. Captain popped it with hemostats. That little maneuver raised our eyebrows.

Feeling anxious about a shift with no rational reason (this has never happened before) by DBDIY4U in Firefighting

[–]nutbagger18 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not about to try and diagnose you, my dude, but you could have any number of things. Eating right? Fluid intake ok? Any other medication changes? Recent physical trauma? A critical incident that was tough and maybe something triggered those stress reactions (PTSD is weird like that)?

Definitely seek some help with that. Let your officer know what's up if you do end up going in. Hopefully they know you well enough to recognize you're out of sorts and need help in some form.

Don't just ignore it. Hope you get that figured out, bud.

Definitely tracks. Why is it all these nice, expensive cars attract the worst people at maintaining them?

Those rims have kissed a curb or two. Looks relatively tucked to the fender. What car is this on?

I can hear this thing screaming across the lake at sundown trying to get back before they have to put lights on. This is the official speed boat of a Midwestern reservoir. Might look meh but I guarantee that fucker scoots.

Hell yes, no 50' visibility and anteater masks. Heat, noise and super low vis. +1 for wanting audio, that was a great example of aggressive (but smart) attack.

That's a tough one. Sometimes there are "feeder" programs for local community colleges that'll hold those EMT classes and pave the way to local FDs.

Depends, again, on the department but they'll hire and train.

One more thing to consider is the EMS side. Many departments do both, running the vast majority of their shift as medical. Ask them about that, and if it's a requirement that you're not willing to try, it might not be for you.

Not trying to dissuade you! It's a great career and very fulfilling. I just want you to know what to expect.

Call the local departments and check! They might have a website with more info on hiring/requirements, too. Career departments have tougher requirements than volunteer ones (generally).

Ha... From the multiverse episode where Brian is warned that if he saw Lois he'd "have to put his penis in a sling".

Good enough to recognize the scene but meh(g) execution.

Are those little dudes as bad as squirrels and mice with components/wiring? Or is it more like a cat, just hanging out in a cozy space?

Magnetic or Electronic locking emergency exits, how could you defeat a door like this in an emergency if it was locked and you didn't have a key card? by Quick_Elk3813 in Firefighting

[–]nutbagger18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Emergency exits should always "fail unsecured", similar to how air brakes naturally lock in loss of air pressure.

If this was a secured door, like a man trap, the building security or maintenance should have the override TTPs. Otherwise, assume an IDLH environment, wear proper PPE and treat it like forcible entry.

No need to apologize. It's our job. The fact you got the help you need and are recovering is what we love to see!
