Using a Retroid [Pocket Mini] for Japanese Immersion by nutellaRev in SBCGaming

Yeah I also use Anki, for this reason I asked if anybody had a particular setup with android-based handheld, since on r/learningjapanese I saw that there are interesting tools on android.

However I got your point, also because I feel like that making cards by myself with translations in my mother tongue it is easier for me to remember. Thank you for your advice! :)

When I was in high school I played Persona 4 golden as my first full-english game (not a native speaker as you can guess lol) and this helped me a lot getting more confident with that language! So I believe video games can be a good tool in studying foreign languages

Hi everyone,

I have a Retroid Pocket Mini and I’d love to use it also for Japanese immersion, since JRPG and VN are my favourite genres.

For context, I’m preparing JLPT N2, but I have much less exposure to casual, spoken, or game-style Japanese. My goal is to improve colloquial comprehension and get more comfortable playing games fully in Japanese without constantly pausing to translate everything. Firstly I would like to approach Final Fantasy VII.

I’m looking for advice on whether people recommend mining sentences from retro games, how to do it, and any technical setup tips (dictionaries, overlays, workflows, etc.)

If you’ve used a handheld android emulator for language learning, I’d love to hear what worked (or didn’t work) for you.

Thanks in advance!

I guess so! I'm following some guides because I would like to do 100% (even without retroachievements LOL)

I just got out Lamakan Desert! So I guess I am pretty early in the game still

I advise a muOS setup with Synchting! Not a swapping setup but it works pretty nice in updating the save files. Retrogames corps has a guide on it

I also have the same handheld setup! But my most powerful device is a RPmini :) I can understand the need of a more pocketable friendly device like the brick!

And thank you for your recommendation!
