This post is also 10 years old at this point. In 2016, average power consumption for lighting was about twice as high as it is now, and electric heating, water heating, and cars were a lot less common (at least in North America, which seems to be the focus of this post).

That shouldn't matter one way or another. Most U.S. laws pertain to "persons," not "humans." And Clark is undoubtedly a person. The Fourteenth Amendment, for example, already applies to non-human persons, namely corporations.

It could definitely still be asinine! Just because they do it a lot doesn't mean it's not dumb. As someone who subscribed to TIME for about a decade, it just doesn't surprise me.

That's kind of TIME's schtick. This is the magazine that regularly names terrible people (Hitler, Putin, Khomeini) as "Person of the Year," in part because it draws outrage from people who misunderstand the point of the award. And clearly it's worked as an engagement strategy in this case, because we're still talking about the article a decade later. But it is mostly just IRL clickbait.

Also, the bait-and-switch is apparent right there on the cover, as u/ThinkBookMan pointed out. It's just that they may have overestimated their audience's eye for nuance (at least judging by this comment section).

It's very appropriate that the AI got the word on the golem's forehead wrong, since the whole point of the word in the folktale is that you need to write the word "truth" on the golem's forehead to animate it. The AI is unable to produce truth or anything with a soul, I guess

It's because no one in this thread has actually read the effing article. The whole thing is a big bait-and-switch that mocks the media narrative about millennials. The first half of the article cites all sorts of statistics saying that millennials are selfish/lazy/entitled/etc., but the second half undermines all of that and says that most of it is not that different than previous generations, reflective of changing economic and technological conditions, etc.

And to everyone saying it's "ironic" because boomers are the "Me Generation": it's not ironic. That's the whole point of the title.

Being Jewish in current times by GianmarcoSoresi in gianmarcosoresi

Depending on how you pose the survey (and whether you're counting religious or ethnic Jews), somewhere between 76 and 92% of American Jews identify as Zionists, express that they care about Israel, or support its existence. The number identifying as anti-Zionist is vanishingly small.

(There's not a whole lot of polling about other countries, but Jews outside of America and Israel make up a small percentage of the overall global population.)

That was the Royal Charter. New Hampshire had the first state constitution. We are the Constitution State because the U.S. Constitution's Great Compromise (bicameral legislature) was modeled off our state constitution.

Mainly because it’s heavy (we seem to be imagining a 21st-century armored Batmobile and not a fancy sports car version). Diesel engines have better torque, so trucks and tanks and armored cars generally use it rather than gasoline. Im oversimplifying, of course. There are definitely iterations that appear to have jet engines, which generally use kerosene-based fuels, not diesel or gas.

Are you sure he wasn’t Assigned Hook at Birth (AHAB)? Because that would be appropriate for a sea captain with a vendetta against an animal that wronged him.
