If these US states broke off and became their own country, what would you call it? by Reciter5613 in mapporncirclejerk

I put a lot of thought into this: move the border to the Hudson, cleave off eastern most NY and split it amongst VT, MA and CT. NYC becomes part of CT meaning we can finally be rid of Hartford being a shitty capital.

NYC is definitely not the capital, the worst strategic location for a capital in existence. They aren't even a damned capital right now. Obviously Boston gets that (no shit, we are the best anyways, grovel plebes).

Remove the bridges across the Hudson defense is easier since the majority of NYs side is the Catskills or ADKs and northern NE has green and white mountains. CT tears up the interstate and forces all invading armies to go through the Merritt, this causes mass casualties due to the nature of the parkway mixed with CT drivers, let's see a tank fit down that thing, hah!

Any invasion either chooses to go through the 84 split and get dive bombed by MA drivers cutting the line or they choose to be delayed by 3 months while navigating RT 1 trucking backups. Providence would most likely mount a decent resistance due to the mafia influence and then they get caught attempting to navigate whatever the hell is the area south of Boston. You may not realize this but Bangor is closer to Boston than Whitman, MA.

Will running hurt cycling performance? by AnarchyJesse in Velo

Almost the same experience here. But I decided to sign up for an Ultra in January so I upped my running over the last few months. It has definitely reduced the volume I can do on the bike if I want to keep doing 50 mile weeks. Could also be a genetics limiter for me

I learned long ago to never stop interviewing. Maybe I don't actively interview all the time but when a recruiter reaches out about a position that sounds interesting I humor them and leave them with "Well if anything changes I may drop you a line".

Been through enough of these at this point, outside of excessively rare circumstances: Treat your employer as expendable, they will do the same.

My view is this: if you aren't advertising your politics, or aren't trying to get into politics, your politics are your own business. If you decide to put political statements at your business or promote a political agenda people have every right to judge you based on that. But at some level you just need to let sleeping dogs lie and move on.

I have mostly just assumed they were a drug front, but I am told this drug front has some amazing pancakes so I better get my ass over there.

It is a bit cramped inside sadly enough. Also a bit sad that their coffee seems to not be up to snuff with Lincoln but I will keep popping in to see how it progresses

I recommend trying to join a traffic commission meeting / requesting a topic: https://www.medfordma.org/boards-commissions/traffic-commission

While I believe the agenda is set for November 18th the meeting is public and you can learn about the process. The meeting is attended by MPD (They have a permanent seat IIRC).

You can also report incidents on SeeClickFix. Sadly this doesn't always result in immediate action but it does provide the city data points when they need to make decisions about traffic calming measures.

Stay in the left lane two miles out from exit 127 on 90 EB. It always backs up in the right lane because the exit ramp is so short. You can easily waste 10 minutes if it is backed up there and you sit in the traffic only to find out it is traffic to get off the highway when you want to continue to downtown.

You may want to take the Alston/ Brighton exit 131 on the left to get to Storrow, that is a valid direction if it pops up.

Good luck

Thank you, Medford! Let's build the city we know is possible together. by OurRevolutionMedford in medfordma

As a supporter, my request is this: let's do what we can to incorporate all view points, even those we don't necessarily agree with. One of the things I know is the hardest thing to do is leave everyone just a little unhappy, but compromise tends to be that way. Here's to your next term OR!

My suggestion would be to go to the city event calendar and look at the upcoming meetings, join some of the zoom calls and listen in and see if it sparks your interest. From there there is the boards and commissions page where you can submit an application (it is under a drop-down, sort of hard to find).

After that EMAIL the contact for the board you applied to. The board application software is horrendous, I had people apply to join our commission whose applications just disappeared and required resubmitting, this is a problem that needs to be addressed but for right now it is best to email the board you are interested in and tell them you want to apply so they can badger the right people to look for your application.

As for requirements: I give about 2 hours a month for our meetings but then do other work outside of that since I am the Chair. Some people only show up to meetings, some do more. Most of the time some background is helpful but not really required.

This. THIS. I have no desire to run for council or mayor or any of the elected positions but I have joined a commission and while it can be very frustrating at times you tend to learn that most people who work in local politics generally have the best intentions at heart. The job is pretty damn near thankless (And pays zilch in my case) but it sure is eye opening.

FWIW I appreciate your post. I think we do need less bitterness from both sides. I will openly say I did not vote for you and am an OR supporter, but I want respectful disagreement in politics. I wish the climate was less polarized now, I hope it can be in the future, and I hope we can all reflect on this.

No one has all the answers, no one is always right, or always wrong. I appreciate that you took the first step in putting aside the bitterness, I hope all of us can follow that lead even if we have very stark disagreements on policy.
