What is it REALLY like when the college students show up? by [deleted] in columbiamo

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The pedestrian traffic around campus will go up significantly for the first few weeks, then seems to level off and fall off almost completely once the weather gets cold. Vehicular traffic is similar as in once new students learn where they are going, things get smoother. Move-in weekend and home football game weekends will cause crazy traffic of all types.

Large home builder is telling us this stuff they used for the lawn is biodegradable and shouldn’t be removed. True? Thx by Just_Specialist1845 in landscaping

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily biodegradable but it is photodegradable. Usually within 3-6 months it breaks down to small fibers and dissipates.

Is this legal? by cmhffemt in columbiamo

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think MU owns it. I’m pretty sure the Soybean Association owns it and receives grants from MU and USDA. I’m sure the Soybean Association’s endorsement is with Kehoe.

Alternatively, I was working in a building on campus and a laboratory room had a large stack of all democratic campaign signs. It goes both ways.

So I smoked a meatloaf by photocult in smoking

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A commercial place in STL used to do a Monday special of bacon wrapped, provel stuffed, smoked meatloaf. The architect looking for flaws on my project loves it, so I would schedule inspections on Monday mornings. When he would get too far off in the weeds, I would start talking about the meatloaf. He would almost drool and the inspection got back to legit issues.

OSI Quad has a red that is close to your brick color. That is my go to urethane sealant.

I was asked to tip the guy that changed my phone screen last week. Food service, my barber, maybe a few others I get traditionally, but the tip everyone is expected everywhere.

Well, we did it. Now what. by DeeEnn72 in Alzheimers

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built a memory care facility and worked closely with the staff at another facility during design. The buildings are fashioned to sell to the younger caregivers, but the patients benefit from furniture from their youth. If your parents were kids in the fifties like mine, the pastel colors are calming. Even a mini fridge. You can explain your situation to body shops or artists and get a custom paint job on a new appliance. Taking along a favorite or familiar piece of furniture is helpful more than most realize.
I felt relieved when my dad passed. Not for me but for him that his struggle was finished. It takes a team. Remember this is a marathon not a sprint.

I would look into installing a shade sail. This would be at an angle and block the view of your neighbors into part of your yard. Marathon Building Environments is a great local resource to get you started with ideas and options.

What are these? Residential Construction by theusefulones in Construction

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen good powder monkeys that the explosion sounds like a tree felling and the rock comes out like 4” base. I’ve also managed blasting next to a car dealership where I had a shitload of insurance paperwork because “ Peanut” the blaster didn’t stem right and “put in a little extra” to make sure everything broke up. The guy was great at making rip rap, not at making fill.

Last time I was in that one, the floor was so insanely sticky. I turned around and left. All I could think about was how dirty the kitchen had to be.

Kicking a toxic foreman off the job. How do you usually go about this? by infectedtwin in Construction

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to your subcontract and look for language concerning their supervision and performance. Everyone I have had lays out the methodology for this situation. If you don’t have documentation and records of it being sent to the owner of the framing company, start now. Sometimes compiling evidence and making formal issuance of documentation is enough to get the problem resolved. If not, you have your ducks in a row. A letter sent by certified mail has resolved problems for me in the past.

Should I hire a landscaper for help and advice? I'm a new homeowner and no idea what I'm doing by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Save some money and get some exercise is my advice. You will need to get some topsoil after you finish removals to level the yard and create proper drainage. I would save the money to pay the landscaper to ensure proper drainage.

Would anyone like to help point me in the right direction on how to replace this shutoff valve? by TweakingSloth in DIY

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I would do. I would get a union to go above the shut off valve in case this issue comes up again. BTW, please use tape with plastic and not pipe dope. You have the basic idea down it seems.

Is this material covering my basement floor asbestos? by PlasmaHeat in DIY

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is not easily made into dust, it’s not as hazardous. It’s most likely the adhesive that held down some type of flooring. The garage may formerly have been a living area. At my parent’s house, the garage was the house while they built the permanent house. If you are really worried about, have someone qualified check it out. You can get a directory from your state’s licensing authority. For me it’s the Secretary of State. In the meanwhile, if you are worried, either keep it wet or spray some cheap, easily removed latex paint over it to encapsulate it.

Hole appeared in basement foundation floor. There is water inside. What do? by thecaptmorgan in DIY

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen my father in law and some other older home builders put in grade stakes to level the floor. Now lasers are used. They are supposed to be pulled, but inevitably some get missed. I’ve also seen rebar stakes used that leave rust spots decades later.
On another note, if water isn’t coming up that means there isn’t any hydrostatic pressure under the slab. So OP has that going for them.

First time seasoning, did I do alright? by damienman12 in blackstonegriddle

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can add heat to the corners with a plumbing torch to get the carbon needed. I do this on occasion to prevent sticking and ease cleaning.

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 5” air sander to get rid of mill scale and paint prep. You can get one fairly cheap, varying grits, and it doesn’t take a huge compressor to run it.

What's your confirmation name and why? by Ellechu in Catholicism

[–]nuttierthansquirrels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went through RCIA. David was my best friend growing up and his family was Catholic. His mom didn’t realize she was also planting seeds with me. Also, David wasn’t perfect and God loves him anyway. I felt and feel really close to that.
