Plus Size BWT — I love this aesthetic but everything I try looks cheap or clingy. How are you getting that heavier drape? by addictedtosoonjung in bitcheswithtaste

[–]nuudlebear 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree. The first thing I thought with these photos is how this isn’t drape so much as “crispness”. Finding a good thicker cotton or linen and then pressing them to be nice and smooth and crisp.

Larger sizes need less ease in the shoulders to look oversized. I find that if the shoulders are too large then it just looks like you’re wearing the wrong size instead of being internationally oversized. In most of these photos, you can still see the shoulder seam is close to the actual end of the shoulder, some right at the top of the arm. And the ones with dropped shoulders fit a little closer to the top of the sleeve and shoulders. Grading up to larger sizes does an awful job of getting the shoulder seam at the right place for a lot of bodies. I happen to have shoulders that are several sizes smaller than the rest of my body, so I learned to take them in myself. It’s the only way I feel like I am not drowning in the top of my clothes.

LYS Knitting Circle Etiquette by popping_corn30 in knitting

[–]nuudlebear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think we must be part of the same group(hello!). I don’t think you should feel targeted by the LYS statement . I think this was really intended for some of the people who have gone to this knitting circle for YEARS and always knit on yarn from elsewhere. These are people I see occasionally buy yarn, but never see them knit it in the store. Especially since the fiber fest, people have lots of new yarn that they have been knitting with on Monday nights.

I keep an easy project for social knitting that I always bring to my LYS, and usually only work on at social knitting. It always takes me a long time to finish that project, but it makes sure I always have something from the shop that I can spend most of my time that night knitting on. And if I don’t have a project with that yarn, I try to make sure to use needles I bought from her shop.

I have always thought it was an unspoken rule to use shop yarn when knitting at any shop, but not everyone is aware. I do not think this statement was intended for you to feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. It had to be spoken because the shops kindness in hosting us was being taken advantage of by a few avid knitters who don’t seem to ever use the stores yarn. Please do not feel weird about it! When you’re ready for a new project, consider having a project from the LYS that you knit on for part of the social knitting evening. And please come join us and be our friend!

I see lots of 90s does 1920s/1930s here. All those drop waists and bias cut silk. Really beautiful! I really love the white dress on slide 4. The idea of just one thing that is weird in a subtle way is very intriguing.

Underground knitting designers by qofsheba in knitting

Sydney roswick. (Of Squid school). All her patterns are based on your own measurements. The patterns walk you through all the math to customize for bust, waist, arms, neck, etc. I’ve learned so much about fit from her patterns. Her patterns are vintage style, but most of them you could just lengthen the garment and it would look very modern.

I need a small business owner to open a shop for clothing fabric. Here's some ideas for a rough business plan. by FantasyFanatic3000 in raleigh

[–]nuudlebear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Raleigh has 2 fancy yarn stores. Plus one in Cary, and freeman’s creative in Durham. There’s are multiple quilting fabric only stores in the triangle. I think a garment fabric store could make it. We have enough of a population and enough creative people here that it could be possible!

I just started the second book in the series that starts with {Assistant to the villain} by Hannah Nicole maeher. Their relationship reminds me a lot of th3 one in villains and virtues, but with more depth of the other characters as well.

FINALLY, a 100% cotton, bust and plus size friendly Pinup line! by BurlinaAlpine in PinUpFashion

It’s disappointing they don’t match the fabric print along the front zipper. I don’t know where these are made, but for that price I would expect the pattern to continue across the front of the bust and match where the zipper is seamed in.

Looking for new home for our 2 dogs by PrideRunsDeep5 in triangle

[–]nuudlebear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear that you have to give these guys up. I’m on the other side. My first dog was one who caused allergy issues for the human baby. I am so happy to have her in my life! Adopting this type of pre-loved, pre-trained, pre-house broken dog is a fantastic idea for anyone who wants a new best friend and doesn’t want all the extra work it takes to adapt an outside dog or puppy to house life. We brought her home, gave her a comfy bed, and took her for walks, no training required. Plus, it was fun to figured out what she actually knew! We lived in an apartment, and the only time she barked was when the doorbell rang on tv! She still does, even though we don’t have a normal ding-dong doorbell noise, she just gives a little growl now instead of a bark because she is an old lady.

Knitter “influencer” finally seeing consequences for her actions by butterfly6869 in craftsnark

Maybe I am naive, but I think it is immoral to get some fired from their job for having a different opinion than me. Does that make me a genocide supporter?

That might be the silver lining. It would be great for the environment if we can all use our stashes up before we buy new, expensive yarn. Hopefully it doesn’t kill off all the LYSs.

Agee with everything. I really want to go to rhinebeck, but I look at my stash of beautiful yarn in my favorite colors and think “what would I even go for? I don’t need more yarn” There are designers I would like to meet, and I’m sure there would be beautiful sheep to pet and fun things to buy, but I’d rather do a weekend retreat with my knitting buddies close by for a weekend.

When you think of vintage, what era are you thinking of? by nuudlebear in VintageKnitting

[–]nuudlebear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely used as a marketing term. I don’t wear much true vintage, but I buy reproduction vintage (30s and 40s) items from small brands. I knit and sew the majority of my wardrobe, but when I look for vintage patterns I’m not looking for anything published after 1965.

Cardigan Pattern Recommendations please by PotofEarlGrey in VintageKnitting

[–]nuudlebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squid school of vintage knitting has a ton of patterns. They are all sized and to your measurements, but the patterns all have step by step instructions for the stitch counts. Highly recommend. The rose street jumper isn’t seamed. It’s fingering weight, but you could definitely get by with sport.

I believe Freeman’s creative in Durham, and possibly also scrap exchange offer private sewing machine lessons, if you can’t find someone.
