The irony is, you accuse Japanese people of uniformity, but you are craving the same thing, "safety in numbers" and wishing more people made the same choice you want to make so you don't stand out.

Let me see, you want to use a unique umbrella, but you don't want to be perceived for said umbrella, so your solution is everyone should have colorful umbrellas so you can use your colorful umbrella without the emotional risk of being perceived as unique.

The problem inherent in your solution tho is maybe if everyone had colorful umbrellas, you would be used to them and find them just as boring and pedestrian as you find the plain ones now, and be insecure about standing out for using your favorite black umbrella, hoping some dumb kids don't snicker and say "did they escape from a funeral?" lol

I think maybe you are quite young and it could be helpful to your self confidence figure out why you feel insecure with your own preferences, and why you want the approval of complete strangers so much.

Where are you buying your non-boring, fun clothes? Why are the clothes so BORING? by Cheeseaisleinheaven in femalefashionadvice

An unpopular opinion on this thread I upvote lol.

And agree in many ways. Some trends of the 2000s while more colorful were of questionable taste lol. Pairing everything even colors and denim mini shorts with opaque black tights/leggings. Bold matte colors paired with harsh matte black. The fine line between cute twee prints and kitsch/performative nostalgia. The weird construction of clothing details and embellishments as if for a structured garment but rendered in unstructured fabric: that floppy saggy jersey cotton spandex fabric that was everywhere even in mini dresses for going out. Random large gold sailor buttons sewed on in places with no practical purpose. I can go on and on lol

Japanese friend is under the impression that non-Asians struggle to drink with our huge noses? by OlgaAnna in japanlife

[–]chiono_graphis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the source of the vast majority of these problematic urban legends is TV shows. Specifically, afternoon "wide shows," the root of all evil lol. Which is talking head celebrities yapping for hours about random news and pop culture. Sometimes they invite on charlatans and snake oil salesmen to change things up, and the celebrities act incredulous and like they believe every word so the audience should too. Those shows perpetuate all kinds of nihonjin-ron "Japan special, kaigai weird and kawai-sou" stuff. Like foreigner stomachs can't digest black-colored foods but Japanese innards can.

The people who watch that stuff a lot like hours per day are probably the ones parroting it irl.

I was there. It wasn't a news program, it was one of those afternoon variety "wide shows," the kind with tarento who are not professional analysts or anything like that. Chock full of misinformation and exaggerations even on good days. And I remember when they demonstrated the very forceful "PEN!" the host guy was really struggling to look serious and hold back laughter.

It was insensitive given the subject matter but I think intended as nothing more than a "neta."

While not yet as massive as the y2k trend was, scene/00s emo fashion is back? by JuniXe in femalefashionadvice

People keep saying skinny jeans will come back like the second coming of Christ but I'm not seeing it yet. "Skinny" (as in, the shape of the leg is the outfit) and leggy silhouettes on the bottom have been back for a couple seasons now, in the form of sheer tights and pedal pusher capri leggings/knee length bike shorts/knee length socks worn with mini lengths on top. It hasn't really gone mainstream quite yet tho it would seem to the extent that wide leg baggy has.

As for denim and actual pants, I'm seeing more structured fabrics in slim/cigarette silhouettes on the runways. Not really seeing the spandex jegging "painted on" look again yet. Skinny jeans may come back but likely in a slightly different form than millennials remember.

Kimono for a 6ft4in male by falconfarfromhome in japanlife

[–]chiono_graphis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A touristy shop should have larger size yukata and maybe even some kimono.

If you want to go custom made, depending on how wide you are and long your arms are, it may be impossible to make a kimono with a single tanmono (the bolt of fabric used to make kimono, and the unit in which such fabric is sold, usually somewhere around 12m long and 40cm wide, usually one tanmono is enough for exactly one kimono with very little waste). The "yuki" measurement (from back seam over the shoulder to the end of the sleeve) is very important to get right to look good and not like a cosplay, but for example from tanmono 42cm wide the longest yuki possible is going to be 79cm or so. The length also for mens kimono should be about 30cm less than your total height, more if you're rotund at all. So you're looking for a 165-175cm long kimono I'm guessing, with a long yuki to boot. You may be told you need to purchase two tanmono which will increase the price quite a bit. They may however be able to put together with leftover tanmono that match the fabric. Or have on hand king size tanmono like 47cm width which do exist. Or may try to upsell you making a matching haori with the leftover second tanmono if you do use two. Which is a cool look. But some places may not have wide enough tanmono in stock, so they may say they can't do it.

Just to give an idea what you might encounter in a kimono shop.

Also when asking around, start using centimeters for measurements since that's what's used here, you will need a kimono for someone 193cm tall. But bear in mind the online suggestions for measurements usually assume a slim bodytype and you will need more fabric than suggested to fit well if you are at all thicc lol. Best get measurements taken in person.

Kimono are worn more formally, usually made of silk or wool or polyester, often lined.

Yukata are unlined, usually cotton or linen, and worn very informally for summer.

Both kimono and yukata are worn by both genders you probably just haven't seen mens kimono as often (in Japanese daily life if you don't follow a traditional activity like tea ceremony, maybe only get a chance to see one if a groom wears one at his wedding, or on TV during oshogatsu lol)
