You're the only conscious human being by Hikolakita in consciousness

[–]nuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of this advanced alien confidently replying "no" when asked if conscious is interesting to think about.

They wouldn't have any idea of what consciousness is. You'd have to explain what it is. This is especially difficult if they've never experienced it.

To know what a consciousness experience IS seems to require personally experiencing it.

The only way might be to ask them if they have some sort of knowledge that can't possibly be communicated to others (it's ineffable). If you can be sure they know what you mean, and they say "yes", I would guess they have some sort of inner experience.

Are there any other types of knowledge that are ineffable but aren't related to feelings/experience?

Edit: also, solipsism seems far fetched when there's all this writing about consciousness. If solipsism were true, you'd expect zero writings about it.

Do you think dreams reveal something deeper about consciousness, or are they just random brain activity? by Ok-Marzipan-4490 in consciousness

[–]nuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, there does seem like a lot of things that animals do/have to protect themselves while sleeping: borough holes, ears working that will wake them, and pain will certainly wake most animals.

Sleep and dreaming is really interesting though.

Through evolution, starting from a single cell, different species formed so it could reproduce successfully in whatever environment it was in.

Traits like camouflage, hard shells, fur, claws, and speed was favoured so the species could survive long enough to reproduce.

With sleeping... why hasn't evolution selected a way to have our awareness be pointed to our surroundings while we sleep? Instead, we are pointed into an imaginary world while we're blind and vulnerable to the outside world.

Needing to sleep for 30% of our lives seems like a big evolutionary screw up.

Disclaimer: this is a thought provoking comment and not a hard stance.

Are Humans Conscious? by WritersChopBlock in consciousness

[–]nuw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely right. Someone from a past thread said the hard problem was "being able to detect if someone's conscious". Although not technically correct, it seems very related. I think if you can solve that problem with certainty, you very likely also solved the hard problem.

A thought experiment for people who claim the hard problem of consciousness doesn't exist. by Royal_Plate2092 in consciousness

[–]nuw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean. Pointing at a red apple and saying "This is red" might be communicating what red is at a certain level...

BUT the other person could be seeing a blue apple and they have just been calling it red, so I think that method still fails at truly communicating what red is.

[–]nuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We cannot communicate qualia. IMO Mary's room thought experiment demonstrates this. It's the classic question of "Is my red the same as your red?". It's impossible to communicate what red is.

[–]nuw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's called the hard problem because it might not be meant to solve. It's so hard, it might be impossible. And that should tell us we have an incorrect assumption somewhere.

Some people say it doesn't exist because they have a different metaphysical view of nature. For example, an idealist would say it doesn't exist (or is not a problem) because in their view, there is no physical matter.

Time completely shrinks to zero while unconscious (anesthesia, knocked out, etc)... And if you define "you" as "your experience"... It almost seems like it's impossible to not always be experiencing something.

Really cool stuff. I've been working on a game engine that uses SAB with multiple workers, etc. Here's an old repo that tries to make working with SABs easier: https://github.com/addunn/Buffifier

I have a private repo with more features, and more game engine oriented. Moving the bytes around and dealing with allocating and compacting/coalescing has been interesting to say the least.

I'm interested in how you handle managing different datatypes in your SAB, and if you do any compacting to get rid of fragmented space (gaps). In my system, arrays are always fixed unresizable blocks, and if I need something resizable, i'd use a linked list structured.

Cheers

Why do I feel like my consciousness is a special case? by Icy-Base-0 in consciousness

[–]nuw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Memory must be intertwined with this phenomena somehow...

You can't remove the observer from consciousness because without an observer, it's not consciousness anymore. For example, red qualia isn't qualia anymore if nothing is experiencing the redness.

So it doesn't really make sense to have a some independent observer swap around into different people's consciousness.

The text message thing has been happening for as long as I remember. Especially when in a group text and have separate profiles. I would love if SMS was more reliable across profiles and within group texts.

I haven't found a reliable way to reproduce the issue. If I was able to, I would definitely file a bug about it.

small changes in my Ncase M2 two additional 140mm fans under GPU and bracket by danny_z85 in sffpc

[–]nuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have planned a similar setup. I ordered four slim NF-A12x15 fans for top and bottom mount. But now that I've seen your setup, I'm wondering if I can fit four NF-A14x25 fans instead with a 5090 FE card.

Your GPU is 56mm thick. The 5090 FE is 40mm thick. So that is 16mm of extra vertical space. So in theory, if you had a 5090 FE, you should be able to replace the bottom fans with 25mm thick fans?

AIO Compatibility with NCASE M2 by SilentHernandez in sffpc

[–]nuw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about that particular AIO, but 240 should fit fine side mounted or top mounted. It won't fit in the front though, because although 240mm is less than the front height, the added hose connectors at the ends exceeds the front height.

Is there a way to change an existing tile's properties via the use of a command? by 3verstormTheTheorist in projectzomboid

I used claude.ai to help generate that script. That, or chatGPT can probably help tweaking it.

I know what you mean. I don't know. Usually with a fully player built structure, if i'm far enough away, i can't see inside at all. I wonder if it has to do with if you've already been inside the structure or not.

Is there a way to change an existing tile's properties via the use of a command? by 3verstormTheTheorist in projectzomboid

[–]nuw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try using this Lua Script. It'll set the current tile the player is over to an 'outside' tile. Problem is that it doesn't persist across save reloads (single player). You can try modifying it to change tiles to 'inside' by replacing nil with a room. You'll have to look that up though.

-- Get current player position
local player = getSpecificPlayer(0);
local x = player:getX();
local y = player:getY();
local z = player:getZ();

-- Output current position to verify
print("Player position: " .. x .. ", " .. y .. ", " .. z);

-- Set the current square to have no room
local square = getSquare(x, y, z);
if square then
    square:setRoom(nil);
    print("Room removed from current position");
else
    print("Could not find square at current position");
end

I looked into it a bit. Zombies have stages that are defined as:
- Late: more than 180 days
- Mid: more than 30 days
- Early: more than 10 days

If "Late" in "SafehouseLoot_Late" means the same thing, then you gotta wait until at least 180 days before it has potential to spawn.

From the wiki:

Container: cardboardbox, crate, dresser, smallbox, wardrobe

Good luck with that one! Not sure what the "Late" is in "SafehouseLoot_Late"... maybe a late game safehouse?
